Will Sergio Ramos go down as one of his generation's best players?

In before someone posts a 10 minute compilation of Messi nutmegging Ramos

Has Ramos done enough to warrant inclusion in the discussion for best players - not just defenders - of his generation? Save for a relatively paltry league title count (playing in the same league as Messi, Xaviesta and Simeone can do that for you), he has won everything there is to win, and time and time again comes up big for Madrid in clutch situations. Also one of the five people to score in two separate CL Finals (since it became the CL), and the only defender to do so.

When he does have bad games, they end up as total howlers, but with time I think people will remember the good moments of his career over the bad.

    What do you think?

Yes he will, he's a different kind of defender.

Thiago Silva is probably the greatest of his generation in terms of defending but Ramos is a hybrid and is good from set pieces, scores vital goals, I think he excels more in teams for big games and tournaments but still as a defender got the right attributes.

The CL thing doesn't matter though, as you said since it became the CL but there's far better defenders through the history of the game, but in terms of this generation it's not even a question.

Anyone that has watched him will testify that he is an absolutely top bracket defender with both physical and mental attributes of the highest order. Anyone that hasn't really watched him will say he's good going forward, a bit sloppy in defence and easily bullied because he's a pretty boy.

I am probably in the minority here, but i absolutely love the cnut. A true leader and captain, always there in the important moments. What a player he turned out to be for Real, a true true legend for them and Spain.

When he was at his best, Ferdinand, Vidic, Terry, Pepe, Pique, Puyol, Ramos and co were at least as good and in the last few years he's been playing in France. I don't think he's got much claim to that crown personally.

Probably, he's won a world cup and 2 (?) champions leagues. Even if he was rubbish he'd go down as a great

He's an immense cnut but he will, and deservedly so. EC, WC, CLs, league wins, you cannot be just 'lucky' to win it all.

Agreed. I rate Silva highly but something about playing his prime years in France just doesn't feel right for me. I would've loved to have both of them playing in the same Top 3 league during the last 4-5 years.

God no, he isnt that good of a defender, always worth lots of cards and fouls, his brilliant attacking headers and presence dont change that. But this generation doesnt even really have great defenders so he'll probably be seen as one. It's funny how people put more value on a winning header vs Barcelona than him already costing multiple penalties this season, and thats for a defender.

Easy to hate him, easy to love him. Most are either or when it comes to him, but regarding his career, it will surely be remembered as one of the club legends for Real Madrid at least.
His a guaranteed card waiting to happen a lot of the time, but then again his contributions all round the pitch is of the highest quality.
Not often someone call pull of being a "heart-on-sleeve-cnut-of-a-legend"!

How do you manage to talk about football with so much pretentiousness? There were multiple times throughout his career when Madrid fans argued he arguably shouldn't even be in the first team. Throughout their partnership, I'd argue Pepe was the better player. I guess they didn't watch him with Pexbo's acute eye for football talent.

Agreed, imo Pepe has been the better defender for a while (immense at the Euro's as well), literally the only things Ramos has clearly above him is his attacking threat, and skill on the ball, and funnily that makes him the "better defender". Pepe has been one of the most underrated players for a while now.

I would've made this thread even without his header vs Barca yesterday - which wasn't even a game winner

People complain about this generation not having any great defenders, but the game is always changing. Defenders nowadays are required to be composed in possession and contribute all over the pitch. Pretty sure the next generation will whine about how their defenders aren't more like Ramos and Silva and Hummels, like how we do with Baresi, Nesta and Cannavaro.

As for the cards/pens, everyone who's played and coached in both La Liga and the PL, from Rafa Benitez to Juan Mata, has remarked how a challenge that is an automatic yellow in Spain is just a foul in England. La Liga is the worst environment to be a defender due to its emphasis on attacking football, yet Ramos more often than not comes up on top.

Really? He has played regularly for Spain and Madrid since he was 18/19. Under various different managers and playing styles and adapted to them all. Always been a starter too.

    Yeah, he's pretty good.

On the other hand Thiago Silva is one of the most overrated defenders to ever exist.

He has scored 75 career goals now and 15 of them have been in the last 15 minutes with several important goals in added time. Love his mentality.

People so often forget this and are quick to point out how he's just a pretty boy who scores goals from set pieces. The social media era is crazy.

Wasn't there a thread on him about a month ago where 95% of posters said he's massively overrated, his goals disguise his poor defending, etc.? :houllier:

He was superb for Milan too, I thought.

I don't think his defending is that good but he is probably the best defender offensively if that makes sense. So immensely dangerous at set pieces.

Easy to hate, both him and Pepe can be despicable at times, but a great player nevertheless.

I actually had someone tell me on this forum that Ramos isn't world class, or one of the best in his position. Yeah right.

Silva's greatest downfall IMO is his relatively underwhelming career in both the Champions League and on the international stage.

I was so incredibly (naively) excited when the BBC said we bid for him. That would have been my ultimate transfer. He is my favorite player, that is not at United. He's the model of the attacking CB. I really rate him, and it's nice seeing people agreeing on this.
