What role will he have next season? Will he improve basic aspects of his game like his touch and passing? If not I can't see him playing much at all. Even tonight he looked pretty awful, though to be fair it was the first game back but i don't think there should be any more excuses for him this season.

I still see him as Rooney's long term partner to be honest. If he can really up his goals tally and start scoring 20+ goals a season, I think he could be.

This season though, I think he may end up taking on more of an impact role as a sub like last season, with Rooney playing up front most of the time with Kagawa behind him.

he's destined to be a super sub IMO - not so bad though, Ole made a career out of it!

The thing about Ole though was that he had more to his game than just scoring. He even had a stint on the wing where he didn't do too badly.

Can't see him as the long term partner. As has been mentioned before I just don't see enough to his all round game. Kagawa is the same age more or less and if he clicks with rooney then it'll be hard for Hernandez to get in. Then there's welbeck who for me has a lot more potential. You expect welbeck to improve his finishing as he matures where as it'd be more surprising if Hernandez can get the considerable improvement needed imo to be a top player. Great squad player and a great impact player but I just can't see him being more than that.

Ole had a lot more to his game. I never got the Hernandez/Ole comparisons. Ole could finish from anywhere both inside and outside the box. Watch some of his goals, his finishing is sublime. But he also had an excellent footballing brain that allowed him to play out wide on occasion and as a link up player.

Hernandez is primarily an in the box poacher. He really doesn't do much when he's outside the box but comes alive when the ball is played in. He is if anything much more similar to Michael Owen than Solskjaer.

Ole was quite good on the wing, yes. And his general play was much much better. Hernandez was absolutely rubbish today, God knows what would we be reading now in Berbatov's thread if he played like Javier.

The thing is he has that charm that makes even fickle fans more lenient towards him. Outside the penalty area he looks so poor is astonishing at times. The fact that this time round he behaved poorly in the box as well didn't help matters.

You just can't stop loving him, though.

For most of his career with us he was always a sub, was given starts but rarely delivered and did all his best stuff coming off the bench.
He did have a stint on the wing when Beckham was out of favour but he was late 20s if not 30 by then.

I think Chicharito is a similar player.

Ye it is fair to say he is more like Owen than Ole in style - but my comparison is more about players who do their best work coming off the bench rather than starting games.

Possibly, but a lot depends on what happens at the club. This time last season he was destined to become a world class poacher who would be a definite starter for him. A year later, he's not changed too much as a player and suddenly that's out of the window.

His all-round game leaves a lot to be desired, however I still think it's something that can be worked on over time. He's not a static poacher, as he has intelligent movement and is lightning quick, both of which can help his game. With a slightly improved touch and better ball control, he could still be an excellent player for us.

I think he's almost become a victim of his success in his first season here. He was praised to the heavens then, and wasn't much worse in his 2nd season but seems to be receiving a lot more criticism now.

A lot of his goals in his first season masked the actual performances he was putting in i suppose. Are goals enough of a contribution when he doesn't add much else to the side? I'm not so sure. Goals win games, but what about games where we are struggling to create. The CL final was tough to watch and Hernandez didn't get a sniff all night. Not to say we would have fared any better with an extra midfielder in there for instance, but it can't have went much worse. Probably why I'm not a fan of poachers like Gomez etc..

First game of pre season sounds like a very good time to judge.
Following on from very questionable performances in the 2nd half of last season he really is in the spotlight for me.

But he is an out and out striker. If he starts scoring goals again that is all we can ask.

He is not a top quality footballer, but he is a great finisher who seems to have lost his touch.

Let's hope he finds his feet again.

We don't bring out the best in him (which is not at all the same as saying that he's flawless, of course). We have too many players who're content to knock the ball back rather than go for the jugular by taking men on or sending precise through-balls Javier's way.

He was much better in his first season with regards to everything. His dribbling, touch and timing was much better than it is now and it must be a confidence thing.

Absolutely right. Chicha is a goalscorer, anyone who expects from him an overall quality game he will be disappointed.

He obviously needs to develop his all round game

I predict we see a few Kagawa to Chicharito goals away from home this year Though

Hopefully Hernandez will benefit from Kagawas ability to thread a pass through the middle of the defence. At the moment we don't really make the most of his defence splitting runs as we tend to get the ball wide and cross it in.

Sure but he can improve that game. Andy Cole was similar but developed his game really well at United. Hopefully Hernandez will be able to do something similar because I think he will need too in the long run.

I think he was put on a bit of a bulk up diet and training regime that had a bit of a detrimental effect on his speed and as a result he's struggling to adjust. It would explain why he is offside so much as if he is feeling a bit sluggish he might compensate by giving himself a fraction of a second extra.

My hope is that Chicha will become a Pipo Inzaghi type of player. Not good at his game but scoring as lot of goals from nothing. As much as some players make jokes with Inzaghi, IMO he was a legend.

About improving his game, of course is impossible. In the end it's not that hard improving his game when he is as bad in some things.

He's fine. He does need to find his touch again but at some point in the season he'll take his chance. Its not like he expects to be first choice all the time and is unhappy playing the squad game

I think there's a chance that Macheda could turn out better than him. If Macheda starts pushing on again and can score goals then he'll bypass him.
Hernandez reads the play and has infinitely better movement than Macheda. Macheda is better in the build up thanks to his physique and better touch and hold up play but in terms of intelligence as a striker Hernandez beats him hands down.

Honestly this wouldn't surprise me I have not really seen extreme pace from him since his first season, remember how he scored against Chelsea in the first minute after literally leaving the Chelsea defenders miles behind? O'Shea lost all his speed after bulking up and Ronaldo also lost a bit of his explosiveness he had as a skinny teen after bulking up. Nani and Valencia also have lost a little bit of speed after joining United but gained muscle mass instead. Berbatov used to have a bit of pace but since he joined United he has been pretty sluggish in that department. Rooney is another one that seems to have lost some pace. Park and Evra have also become slower but that might be age. I don't really trust United's fitness crew since every extremely fast player that joins us always seems to become more sluggish in acceleration after being told to bulk up...

Valencia and Nani lost speed? You're sure of that?
I don't think Ronaldo lost as much speed as he lost agility and flair.

I agree with Rooney but I don't think that has anything to do with bulking up, he's always had a big frame. His explosiveness is gone, a rather simplistic view (which I might agree with) would be that his body is like 35 now, as opposed to 25 when he was a man child at 17.

Valencia and Nani has NOT lost speed. If anything, I'd say Nani is a yard quicker than on his arrival. He's lightning.

As for Rooney, I suppose that is true, but I feel that's a case of losing his explosiveness through a host of injuries as well as him not excactly keeping himself as fit as he should've at all times.

Ronaldo did not lose speed, he's one of the fastest players on the planet still.

As for Hernandez, I think you're right. The idea probably was for him to bulk up and have a better chance with the hold up play, but it's not really happened for him due to a poor touch and poor vision. Pure goalscorer that one.

This, we do not go for any really quick through balls, which is what Chicho wants. I think this could change with Shinzi in the hole though, who will always look for that quick little flick through a gap. I think this could be a good partnership to be used at time.

True, the main thing is he is getting himself into goal scoring situations, if he wasn't I'd be a bit worried. But once he sorts out his first touch and I'm confident enough he will, he'll be banging them in on a regular basis again.

He needs to keep getting chances. Because his knack of important goals is vital. Even last season he got really big goals at important times.

But I wonder will Fergie run out of patience if his 1st couple of months are below par.

I agree. He may not have scored as many goals, but his knack for getting important goals cannot be ignored.

Big season coming up for Hernandez. What with the rumours of us going for another forward, you have to think his place isn't assured.

I disagree. Papers are just linking every big transfer to us, which is common so they can make money. Its only the passing game that Welbeck maybe better than him but everything else he can do a better job.
