Wait a minute, Carrick was shite pre-season? I must have been watching different games then, or was too busy remembering that pre-season isn't about the performance, it's about getting match-fit, the performance is a bonus. Also, you seem to be forgetting that he actually did a very good job of keeping back Barca when he was played out of position.

I hope the usual Carrick bashing doesn't happen again this season, he's clearly our best midfielder (If Scholes could play more games then he would be, there's no doubting the class) and is the first name on the team sheet for me.
If Pre Season isn't about sharpness then how come teams that look good in pre-season usually start the season well, while teams who look poor in pre-season usually have slow starts?

Hasn't Fergie also gone on record, very recently, as stating he'll start the season with the players who look closest to being fit?...no way is Carrick one of those. He's looked sluggish compared to every other one of our midfielders.

I don't see how him single handedly fending of Barcelona as a makeshift centreback and with one arm tied behind his back whilst juggling a lion is relevant to whether he would have started in midfield against Everton. He was fit at the start of last season and got benched for over a month because he took longer to get going than Cleverley, Anderson or Fletcher.

And I'm not Carrick bashing. I was one of those defending him on here when he became scapegoat of the month (after it stopped being possible to use Berbatov), but he starts seasons slowly, and has been the least impressive of our midfielders in Pre-Season. Even if Rio were fit I'd rather others get the nod in midfield for now.

Also, Scholes wa sby far and away the best player on the pitch against Barcelona. Once he tired, United stopped getting the ball out of their own half.

Hasn't Fergie also gone on record to praise Carrick very recently and also say that he'd feel confident with him covering the back four (if need be)?

Again, could have missed something, but I didn't. If he's fit enough to be covering other positions, he's fit enough to play in midfield. Jesus Wept.

This obsession with our midfield is getting tedious.

Last year we were very unfortunate with injuries in that part of the pitch with Fletcher, Anderson and Cleverley all out for nearly the season. We now have a couple of them back and hopefully Fletcher might return. We have also added a class player in Kagawa.
When you go into a season reliant on two known injury prone players, and even more bizarrely, a player with a chronic, incurable, debilitating condition which cost him several months of the previous season, it's not bad luck that you get a lot of injuries, it's just a normal state of affairs. It will probably happen again this season as well.

I swear last season Carrick started the Community Shield despite reportedly carrying a knock, went off injured and then clev and ando were playing well enough that they didn't deserve to be dropped and Carrick was carrying a knock as well. He has started slowly in the past but not always. When he was first here I don't remember ay issues. Anyway for me he's looked fine in preseason and looked sharp against Italy. One of the first names on the team sheet for me.

Carrick not good enough?? WHAT THE feck are you people on about?

The guy could walk into any midifield in the world(club/country) and still you wouldn't pick him to start.. I don't understand you folks and I think I'm not alone in this.

It's shit like this that makes Carrick debates pointless. People on here either underrate him or totally overrate him.

To be fair, in the premiership, its probably only City and Chelsea he couldnt walk into a starting position.
Carrick could play there holding role in midfield better than Mikel! his passing is a liability.

He's covering other positions because he's literally the only person able to play there who's fit enough to walk, where as he's one of five players competing for a midfield place, and has played probably the least amount of time in midfield of the five in pre-season/at the olympics.

This has somehow translated to you as me saying he's rubbish, which I never did. You're arguing against a point no one's even made...well done.

Honestly, they should keep the comments off twitter and listen to Ferguson.
