Has he always actually been a left back? Other than enthusiasm he has very little defensive instinct from what I can see.

The only way you can be fair to him is that in yesterday's setup he's on the left on his own pretty much. Didn't think those in front of Carrick seemed concerned about defending in anyway, so the back 5 were left hung out to dry a lot. Regardless of the result meaning little, conceding 5 (particularly the last 3) is very disappointing, as was Buttner's performance defensively.

I said earlier in the season that he needs time before he can be written off due to how few games he has played and the fact that it's his first season at the club. That still stands BUT, if I had to call it now, I suspect he won't last long with us. He doesn't seem to have any sort of defensive ability or awareness and he's nowhere near good enough going forward to make up for it. He seems a game lad but at the moment he's a liability.

This is why I spend most of my time lobbying for you to be banned.

Not a left back. He's better than young on the wing. I would still sell both young and buttner, neither have enough ability.

He could maybe do a job for us on the left wing, but that's about it.
I would actually like to see him play on the left wing at some point next season if our wingers are going through a bad run of form.

It's good that in a thread about a left back we can still have a go at Ashley Young.

Red Yankee is human scum.
Defensively he is train wreck to be honest. He has the enthusiasm but there is a serious lack of ability. I have seen the same in every game that he has started for us. The only positive was that he helped us rest Evra every once in a while and kept him refreshed.

I would loan or sell him next season when Fabio gets back.

Some players like Obertan and Bebe, you don't need to give them time, you can see that they are far from the required quality. I believe Buttner to fit into that category. Too much missing from his game at 24. He brings a sense of fun to the game but we need more than that.
