Apparently his condition has really deteriorated, going from "serious but not life threatening" to "critical" in a few hours.

Shortly after the news broke this afternoon, it sounded like it was being played down as not as serious as first reported. Surprised to hear he's now in a coma.

Is there a link for the official press release from the hospital or Schumi management? A lot of the updates seem to be coming from 'French reporters' so they're hardly credible.

As a McLaren fan i never liked him while he was in the car, always seemed like a decent friendly bloke out of it

Terrible news, hope he pulls through :(

Shocked when I read this. He's such a champ. Watching Schumi win race after race is a huge part of my childhood. Hope he pulls through. :(

Shit, like others I'd heard it wasn't life-threatening earlier so this is a bit of a shock. Fingers crossed he improves soon.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
A friend of mine, a few years back, actually drove to hospital after a fall. He collapsed as soon as he got there and was in a coma for two weeks, but recovered pretty much intact. Mild epilepsy is now the only real symptom. So it can go from no obvious problem, to life threatening, to fears of brain damage to OK again.

All you can do is wish him and his family the best of luck.

Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a French hospital as a result of the head injury that he suffered in a skiing accident on Sunday.

A statement issued by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble on Sunday evening confirmed that Schumacher's injuries were very serious and that he had undergone emergency surgery.

It described Schumacher's condition as critical and said he was in a coma.

The statement added that Schumacher had suffered from a "head trauma with coma, which required immediate neurosurgical treatment."

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion fell while skiing in the French Alps and hit his head on a rock.

His injuries were sustained while skiing between two of the Meribel resort's toughest pistes.

Medical personnel attended to the 44-year-old, who was wearing a helmet, within minutes and he was airlifted to the nearby Moutiers hospital less than 15 minutes after the accident.

He was later transferred to the Grenoble hospital, which specialises in brain injuries.

I swear racing drivers seem to do more harm to themselves pursuing other activities to feed the speed drug than actually on the racing track.

When he returned to F1 after his first retirement I kinda had a feeling that something bad was going to happen to him on the track... but skiing? It seems a bit surreal.

Got an example? I don't know if modern drivers would be allowed to do something too risky. I heard Hamilton got a single out or something last week. If he's singing, it might be dangerous...

Button/Webber do cycling (Button doing triathlons and such). Webber broke his leg or something cycling i think. Kubica rallying (okay, still in a car).

Admittedly, it was another form of racing rather than another activity altogether, but it happened to Kubica who was an F1 driver.

Aye, that's true. Actually surprising BMW let him do that at all. I think decades ago F1 drivers used to drive other cars as well. Happens far less nowadays.

Raikkonen used to do rallying as well, even before he left Ferrari originally. Snowmobile racing as well.

The Guardian already has a weird article, very nearly referring to him in the past. It isn't looking good.

Medically I'm nearly certain.

That's more positive isn't it, in that they induced it while carrying out the surgery? It kind of reminds me of Senna's death. I remember seeing on ceefax he was airlifted to hospital but then it accelerated quickly and the next thing he was dead.
