Fair assessment. But Martinez has a broader range to his game than Claude - I think that's clear enough. The latter is perfect in a certain set-up, one that is designed to contain the opposition in a certain way. In such a set-up he is one of the best players to ever fill that spot. But he is very limited when looking at the bigger picture. Martinez is the better overall footballer in my opinion - less experienced, obviously; less of a tactically astute, not to say perfectly sly bastard. But a better footballer in any meaningful sense of the word.
I understand your point, but have to disagree about two things.
I am reluctant to pick relative young players, that are not even in their prime, especially if there are good alternatives. Its easy to evalute players like Iniesta, Ramos, Villa, Alonso or Busquets. They´ll all have their place in football history. On the other hand, Martinez´s career could become everything between insignificant and "world-beater". One good season just doesnt look very impressive compared to legends.
Furthermore you underrated Makelele quite a bit. He is one of the best defensive midfielders in the history of the game, defined (to some extend) his own role and won major title in France, Spain, England an Europe. Real´s decision to sell him for no reason was one of the worst transfer decision in the history of the game. Even Zidane, Figo and Raul tried to stop this madness.
Personally I wouldnt need a heartbeat to decide which player I would use.

Petit vs Mauro Silva is a really tough call. It comes down to system/personal sympathy. Both are fantastic player, which offer different things. Petit is a complete DM/CM. Silva is better on the defensive end.

I don't think I underrated Makelele. I just pointed out that he isn't exactly yer complete midfielder. He is a specialized player - one you can't use in any kind of set-up. Not unlike Mauro Silva in that respect - whereas a player like Petit is more versatile. Like Martinez - I would say.

But I agree - one shouldn't jump to conclusions regarding players who have yet to fulfill their potential.

Martinez has done very well for himself, though - he isn't unproven. And if we're to apply the "completely proven" criterium to every player in the draft, we might as well exclude anyone who hasn't reached their - possible - peak.

How can Javi Martinez be unproven? He has been fantastic for 3 years now whenever he plays as a DM or Libero, and we`ve all seen it.

He turned in fantastic performances in a treble-winning side that got worse in big games when they stopped letting him anchor their midfield.

Nobody bats an eye when Duncan Edwards goes in a draft. This isn`t like picking Kevin Phillips and claiming you have a 30 goal a year man. You can`t just assume he`ll turn shit.

The last time I updated it included all the players I've signed.
Well, do me a favour then and post it again!

I just browsed through three pages and I couldn't find the latest one.

I'm not doing this sober, you know - you need to cut me some slack.

I think current players are a bit harshly rated. It should be about their actual peak skill rather than how long their career was. So if a player has had 2-3 years at a peak level higher than another players best 2-3 year - then it shouldn't matter how long the careers of the two players was.

Of course in Martinez case if we take his best 2-3 year consecutive peak, it will involve some of his years where he wasn't in his peak. But in general if a player has played 2-3 years already at a consistent peak level then his age shouldn't be held against him even if he is 19 years old at the point.

In this case though I think Makelele is of course at a different level.

Yes - he obviously is. The man had an illustrious career. But he was still a specialist - a limited player. I don't see how anyone can deny this. And I don't have anything against Makelele - nor against the kind of system(s) in which he would shine. I'm just pointing out that he clearly isn't the sort of player you can simply field in any sort of formation and be golden - because he is a great (defensive) midfielder. He isn't - not in this context. He has his limits - as has many great, even historically great players.

That's intriguing to say the least.

Montero or Bossis at LB?

I presume you intend to use Dennis at RB? Which is certainly possible - but not his most lauded role.

I dont even know who walker is.
English CB when they had their run in 1990. Known for his marking, pace, and horrible distribution. Modern day equivalent would maybe be Smalling having an absolute blinder.

Walker was class. I thouhht the closest modern day equivalent would be a prime Ivan Cordoba. He'll form a complementary partnership with Montero here.

 Yeah - an absolute blinder. Fact is, I would be glad if Smalling turned out to be as good, consistently, as Des was in his pomp. But, all things said and done, Des Walker was a very good CB in his pomp. But he wasn't what most people would call "world class". Well, whatever that means. He wasn't a great player, but a very good one. Or so I would say.

Dennis on the left, Bossis on the right.
Ah...well, that works. Sort of. Bossis' greatest stints came - as I see it - as either a left back or a centre back. He could play across the back four, no doubt - and he started out as right back, I think. So, fair enough. But he is less of a right back, historically, than Dennis is a left back - if I may be permitted to say so.

Just trying to score some cheap points here, though - be it said. It's not outrageous to field him at RB at all - clearly not.

I couldn`t really think of a fast central defender with poor ball skills apart from Smalling.

I`ve only seen Walker play in old Italy 90 games, so I`m going largely on what I`ve read, but everyone seems to agree he was pretty damn good at marking and actual defending, just shite on the ball.

Seems like a good choice for this draft, where CB distribution matters, but making sure Fat Ronaldo or Van Basten or Batistuta don`t get a hat-trick would probably be the main priority.

i'll elaborate further in the tactics, he's a bit specific to the role in this team, specially with the players around him. As I said I don't think this setup will make sense to anyone but me. :D

As long as we`re asking questions, what`s Lerby about?
Here's a piece from an article about the Danish team.

Søren Lerby A force of nature blessed with a frankly obscene will to win. Lerby was seriously hard: he played with his socks rolled down and without shinpads – in its own way every bit as cool as Viv Richards not wearing a helmet in cricket – and in November 1985 he played two games in the same day, first a World Cup qualifier against Ireland and then a German Cup semi-final for Bayern Munich against Bochum. Lerby, who usually started on the left of midfield, had the lot. He was a forceful runner with the ball; a good short passer and a fantastic long passer; an unyielding ball winner and a tireless harrier; and an excellent long-range shooter.

He was definitely good at actual defending, as you say, more than anything else. And he was fast.

Believe it or not I once took a piss with Des Walker in a pub - in London. We talked about the League Cup final in 1992 - which I had a ticket for but never got to attend (but that's another story). I mentioned the fact that Forest had a bloody decent team at the time, just before Fergie's United really exploded - with himself, Clough, Sheringham and Keano, not least. He agreed on that but he wasn't too complimentary on United. Bit of a twat, all things said and done.

Anyway, he was a very good defender - one of the best in England in his pomp. But, again, certainly not great in my opinion. I'd have several others over him from that same era.

Hehe, nice one. Out of interest, are any of those better defenders still unpicked? :p

I remember that. Denmark still needed a point to qualify for the worldcup in '86. Hoeneß came up with the idea that he should play both games. The Danish coach agreed to sub him off as soon as the game is decided and Hoeneß waited on the sidelines to bring him home as soon as possible. In the 2nd half Denmark took the lead, Lerby ran off the pitch and they had a police escort to the airport, private jet to Düsseldorf and then by car to Bochum. A few km away from the Stadium they drove into a traffic jam and Lerby jumped out of the car and ran the last 2 km. He arrived 5 minutes before the game started and Udo Lattek told him he's too late, he can't start in the game . I think he was subbed on in the 2nd half, the game ended in a draw and had to be replayed 5 days later.

Mental stuff.

Wow, thats awesome.

Hehe, nice one. Out of interest, are any of those better defenders still unpicked? :p
I'm not sure, but if by "era" we understand the 90s (early to late) I do believe there are a couple of CBs who used to ply their trade at a certain London club who haven't been drafted. One of them - the most obvious one - has. Two others haven't. And I would say both those others were better than Des Walker - or at least pretty damn close.

Yeah I tried for a couple of names before landing on walker. Hansen, Pallister all got outbid and I have no money. I had known Ferrara would be on sale for a tenner I would have waited but obviously I didn't know.

You've got some money left, though - right. Ten mill or so?
