Well we're not going to sign a whole new midfield, so keeping our current best midfielders fit would be preferable. Dismissing Carrick outright is daft, like you said van Gaal is a great manager and already he clearly rates him personally.
I didn't dismiss him. I know his qualities and what he can bring to a football team. I am also all too aware of his glaring weaknesses. He may be the best but it doesn't mean he is good. He's no where close to the standard we should be aiming for.

He was a useful player when surrounded by world class players. That is no longer the case. Our team can't afford to have passengers. Most players needs to be contributing in all areas of the game, especially central midfielders.

It's easy for Van Gaal to say that he rates him when he is forced not to play him.

He was asked about the Captaincy & from what i gathered, Carrick's seems to be a serious contender for that..
I was watching and he volunteered the information even though it was somewhat unrelated to what he was saying as it's not like Carrick is dead; he will be back at some point etc. etc.

Just seemed like an unnecessary addendum to me.

So no pre season and about 1 month of season football for Carrick. Add to that his 2 months of dross at the start of every season and we have another half a season without a performing Carrick. Brilliant...

So our team was infested with world class players two seasons ago, when Carrick arguably had his best season for the club?

Also easy for van Gaal not to mention him at all if he doesn't rate him. One of our very best players the season before last and wasn't surrounded by any more world class players than he was last season. We'll miss him undoubtedly.

Yeah, i'd have to agree with that, but it seems he's very open & Carrick seems to be highly regarded by Van Gaal also. He looked a tad gutted mentioning Carrick being injured..

Just find it strange he'd weaken us in the transfer market like that. Perhaps he didn't think of it from that angle as it was rather impromptu.

Like I said, he has his qualities. He's exceptional at protecting the back four as his positioning and sense of anticipation is very good.

However, going forward, he contributes nothing, apart from playing a simple pass out to a more skillful player. He was so impressive 2 season ago because our wide players seem were performing somewhat well.

Personally I think he had his best period at United during the Ronaldo era when him and Scholes were at the helm of midfield.

we don't have these calibre of players anymore. Our midfielders need to contribute going forward as well as defending.

Carrick will be gutted. It's never good when a new man comes in and you aren't able to show your abilities to perform a task in any line of business when there's a change in management.

Big blow for the club, but he's a notoriously slow starter as it is, so if he is going to pick up a lengthy injury it's better at the start of the season.

I think this injury forces van Gaal's hand now. He's said he wants to assess the squad over the duration of the tour, but I'm not reading much into that and I expect our pursuit of a midfielder will significantly speed up now.

He's a playmaker, setting up other players is what he's supposed to do. Of course having World class in front of him will help but last season the team wasn't functioning at all, only a few of our players players can look back at last season with any sort of pride. Do you think that players like Verratti and is shit aswell? Our wide options 2 seasons ago weren't performing at a significantly higher level than last season so I don't see how that argument would hold any real weight.

Losing Carrick is a massive blow, you could tell LVG had big plans for him

This. Herrera can do both and we need someone else who can do both. Carrick should be nothing more than a squad player for us from now on.

A lot of posters just don't read. When did I ever say he was shit? Actually I was very complimentary towards his defensive abilities.

A Playmaker? Really? So because he passes the ball to attacking players, he is a playmaker?

He supplies the ball in the least in the least consequential scenario every time. Maybe you like that in a player, I don't. I like Manchester United players to take certain risks in the right situations.

Also the 2nd bolded statement. I was regarding entirely to Carrick. It appeared that he was playing far better when surround by top talent, however he wasn't doing much more than he had been and has been in his unsucessful seasons. It's just that more chances were being created from moves started by his simple passes.

He actually tend to think he can offer some offensive qualities, but he just show them anywhere near enough.

Bloody hell, one of the last things we needed. Only slight positive I can think of is that it may accelerate our search for an extra central midfielder

Yeah man, that wasnt ideal alright. Maybe the club only understood the true extent of injury not that long ago (after the swelling went down + the scan etc) & Van Gaal had little time to process it.

Seems a passionate bloke & Carricks injury has put a spanner in his plans.

Still though - what a great presser he gave. I hope you seen the MUTV exclusive interview with him around 4pm also?

That was pretty sweet also. I loved the message to the fans at the end, when he looked straight into the camera & finished by saying (regarding the fans support) "we win together & we lose together.."

Yes. thoroughly impressive in both the press conference and the interview.

He's one you look at and believe in and I think, we, as a fanbase, really need that after the doldrums of Moyes' and his conviction-less approach to everything he did here.

Feels like United are back!

I think this is a blessing in disguise. Even if Carrick comes back we will get a test period in pre season to how we will handle it without him.

I did read your post, maybe you don't realise how you come off. You said that being the best doesn't make him good so you must mean that he's at the most an average player, right? I don't agree with you at all that he never takes risks, you make it sound like he's like Cleverley always passing it sideways when actually playing direct passes into dangerous areas is probably the one thing he excells at the most. One of his most successful season since joining us was Fergies last season where he was for the most part paired up with Anderson or Cleverley in a squad that was nor more World class than last seasons since it's basically the same squads + Fellaini, Januzaj so obviously he's not dependant on being surrounded by WC players.

So is he out for 10 weeks or several months?
