To be fair, it's just a friendly, not really an indication for what is to come. Two areas need strengthening, midfield and central defense and I hope to God we are trying to get more players in. These successful results should not be influencing our desire to improve this squad.
You say that but last seasons friendly preseason games were an indicator. So maybe they're not as irrelevant as you think.

What's more telling is that he has told moratta that he's staying, quoted in todays GDS
He's said "he's happy to stay" all along. That's GDS story is based on those quotes. Nothing new.

Now get your shit together.

I think it's time to give this one up people! I still remain hopeful we'll sign another midfielder but it won't be Vidal.

Put us out of our fecking misery you heartless bastards. I want closure on this.
Exactly. fecking how difficult is it for some journalist to ask if we are interested in Vidal and for LVG to say no.

Will you be OK on the 1st September when Vidal is still a Juventus player?

I fear for your sanity.
The point of theoretical scenarios is that they need to be in some way believable or at least imaginable.

Yet nobody has, despite it being the biggest story of the summer. Embargo?

OK, lol, well him staying quite pushes the vidal Meter towards us IMO, and frustrates Juve fans like Ronny did to us no end, if he is staying he needs to say it to placate juve fans, he might really have that verbal agreement, hence the relaxed attitude by him and us.

Maybe we are trying to tie other targets up, in the complete assurance of such an agreement so there price does not rocket once we announce how much we are paying for vidal.
How's that for optimism?

Idiots will still buy their crap papers while it's up in the air.
You just know they'll be reporting another agreed sale fee in a few days, regardless of the quotes they are reporting today.

I had a grainy stream and could not make out who the players passing the ball were. Then the secons half started and I saw a player play a first time pass from near the half way line 20 yards back to his defender even though there was no one around him. Then he did the same again a few seconds later. I immediately knew it had to be Cleverley. So I tried to watch the player closely, it turned out I was correct. His lack of balls is amazing. The guy almost feels scared to hold onto the ball. It really is embarrassing. First time pasa and all is fine but he actually makes me feel that he is scared of receiving the ball lest he give it away.
Thats our Tom alright..

Maybe the journos want to keep the lies going so that they sell more papers and get more clicks? To generate a new story like this will take a fews weeks for them. This story is in its peak. Plus they have been helped by Juve and Vidal's comments.

Reading on twitter that the Italian papers are running with rumours of a swap deal, Vidal for Nani and Chico, and its making me suspicious: If these rumours are being pushed by Juventus why are they so keen to get rid of Vidal?

The Manchester press pack have been fairly consistent in saying Juve are trying to drum up interest, and United are monitoring the situation but not diving in head first. So what's the deal? Are Juve broke? Vidal's wages, according to what I've read, aren't that high. What gives? Is his knee in a worse state than previously thought like Hargreaves'? It makes no sense to me that Juve would be feeding this stuff to the Italian newspapers unless there's something fishy going on.

This.

We get a few injuries in defence and midfield and we'd struggle. We need another CB and CM.

The English journos aren't even reporting it, so that doesn't really add up. It is definitely very odd how little the English press are covering this, compared to the Italians.

I'm glad I distanced myself from this a while ago. I admire those who continued to fight and believe, but I think this is definitely not happening.

I now have a total of £150 of Vidal to stay at Juventus

I initially did it so at least Id win a bit of dough if we didn't manage to land him, but now I actually hope we don't sign him.

Fcuk, I hope he doesn't sign for Liverpool or Bayern!

2 injuries could change an awful lot. I didn't claim they were irrelevant either but we both know competing to win a premier league is another challenge all together.

I get trying to firmly assert your belief that he won't come but seriously 150?! I think 20 would have been enough. There is a chance no matter how remote you may deem it that he will sign for us. If you don't care about 150 quid then fair enough it's your money.

I believe LVG will have a fair crack at the league and will get us top 4 with this squad.

I'm a gambler, a casual one, but the winnings from a £20 stake would really do nothing for me.

I think it's a great idea to be honest! If we don't sign Vidal I think my disappointment would be similar to that of losing £150, so it's win win!

As much as I'd have liked him to come, I don't really care anymore. Herrera and Fletcher have been excellent on tour. The tour has shown that our problem has been systemic and not so much an issue with the personnel. it went from the top right through the club.

There might be one or two more signings but I am pretty sure nobody will care if we continue to progress under Van Gaal.

From a newbie....

I want to talk about the broader aspect of Man utd transfers and who is to blame if we don't sign players.

People will criticise Woodward for the lack of signings/big signings and will hold LVG as the lord that can do nothing wrong, but this wrong. You have to take into context LVG's transfer background, he like to buy cheap and young players who he can mould. He has a history of avoiding massive signings. He always has a bad transfer record compared to other top managers when he has not had a sporting director. He actually had a massive argument with Bayern Munich''s directors because he did not want to sign any players the following year! I am not saying LVG can't do right, but I am just saying that you should look at history before making a decision.

Woodward on the other hand has done amazing for a person who has had one year in his role, in the biggest club in the world. Has more responsibilities to fulfil then all other clubs (the best in the financial income aspect, but this is a transfer related post). Last year was a blip and Moyes had a significant part in madness from last summer. He has however redeemed himself with a big signing of Mata, Shaw and Herrera. You have to take into consideration that Shaw and Herrera deals happened extremely quickly. Yes, we did have talks before hand about the transfers. However, the Herrera deal is complicated with different clauses and legalities. People will say that we had worked on the transfer for many months. What is there to work on? Herrera wanted to come here and we just had to pay the clause (which was dealt around the 2 weeks before Herrera was signed), there was not negotiations about a fee. One more thing, people blamed Woody for Herrera not coming last season, that is not true! Moyes has a fee in mind for what is Herrera's worth which was around £25m. The clause was £30m. So we did not go with it. The reason why it is not Woody's fault is that the following year, LVG does rate Herrera as a £30m and Woddy paid that fee quicker that you can say "Gerrard is a wan..". People also say how we missed out on Kroos and that we didn't want him. That is absurd. I think that as soon as Real Madrid came into the picture, Kroos wanted to go there (and play CL), so Woody tried to save face and said we didn't want him anyway. Credit to Woody there, even if it was a bit trivial.

LVG said that he was given a list of targets and he instantly wanted Herrera and Luke Shaw as they were quality and he wanted them. Yes, he may want other targets but they need time to negotiate etc. However, Woody says that we can get any player and he is right, but for top players like Hummels-it is down to preference. Would they want more money or be in the CL. Man utd is a huge club and people would come here no matter what, but if you are already in a big club, the move is not as big and so you would rather stay until Man utd offer CL. That is the sad truth and you can't Hide it. We may get him, but that depends on the individual's footballing values.

Now you know the context, this moves me on to Vidal. Reasons why we have not bid yet/got him/will never get him:

-LVG is assessing the squad and still has one month to make a decision if he wants another midfielder.

-LVG thinks he is a GOD and will try to improve the midfielders as he has an inner belief that he can change anyone into world class players, which may backfire.

-LVG actually is confident with the midfield as we are winning a lot of games and are not being overpowered from the games played, again, is extremely naive. But, you never know with this guy.

-LVG has given a valuation of the player which considers his quality and his AGE. Maybe he doesn't want to pay £45m for a player who will be 28. Maybe it is in his footballing values that he buys young players.

-Woody might have relayed the figure quoted by Juve after initial contact 2 months ago, and then LVG told Juve to stick it where the sun don't shine. From then, we may have not contacted them by giving them the silent treatment as out midfield worries is not priority for LVG.

-Vidal has talked to his agent about wanted to move, Man utd have talked to his agent (but not Juve themselves, thus they said they have not contacted Juve about Vidal. Seems dead an buried). Vidal does not want to rule out that he does not want to go, just in case man utd do come with an offer. I think he is doing all that he can without alienating the Juve fans just in case he stays y saying "he is happy to stay"

-With the system that LVG is implementing, there is space for only 2 midfielders, and that required a midfielder of the type of Carrick, Flether, Strootman(will wait for him until he recovers fully) who can dictate play. While another runs alot and closes down space( Herrera). So where does Vidal fit? LVG may think that we have other important areas to fix like the wing backs and defenders. This is unbelievably risky as if Herrera or Fletcher gets injured, we are left with players that are so far down the quality as the first team regular players.

So, don't blame woody as he is given the targets to get AND their valuations. If selling club wants to sell a player higher than the Valuation, things get messy and the MANAGER has the ultimate decision to pay that amount as we have 'unlimited money'. Di Maria for example is reportedly being sold for £60m, that is outrageous and everyone knows he is not worth that amount. FFP is another thing to talk about later. Hummels as a target needs convincing more than anything else as he has no reason to move other than getting paid more, which I don't see him as a player to move for more money. If LVG can convince him of his project, then things can change. It is football at the end of the day.

Although he's a quality player, I feel like the muppet hype about signing him has to do with last year's failures and typical knee jerk response of throwing money at a problem to feel good about ourselves and the future. Much of that can be solved simply by a new manager, new system, and a reinvigorated confidence among the players.

Hopefully LVG learnt from his past mistakes and buys "big" where it is necessary and doesn't become "blind" for his own players. I'm not saying we have to buy Vidal but it is so obvious that we need more quality midfielders

Its always funny when people think van Gaal is that naive and blame him for rejecting superstars, I am pretty sure that's not true and van Gaal knows what we need, so no I will definitely don't blame him before he comes out and makes a official statement that he don't want someone like Vidal and our midfield is good enough. I don't want to blame anyone, but Woody is the one who will look stupid after his comments and that's deserved. When you talk about world record fees, best players in the world, watch this place bla bla the second summer in a row and deliver nothing, then people will blame you.

I don't think anything will happen with Vidal anymore, everything comes from Italy, so maybe his agent is just spreading rumours and want offers or a payrise for him. Would be totally stupid if we don't put at least a huge bid on the table. And yeah we need him, no one here should overrate our Pre-Season games, they mean nothing and with a few injuries (which we have every season) our team could be completely fecked and Top4 will be a hard fight.

No ones really blaming Woody for anything transfer related, unless you're an idiot. The main reason why we didn't sign well last summer is simply because everything happened at once. HUGE changes in the club. Also, which has been mentioned a lot, I think top players didn't want to play under Moyes.

The only reason Woody would get stick if no more players/no big players are signed come Sept 1st is that he blabbed on about our spending power and how we could buy any top player, plus "watch this space"... he's set himself up for disappointment there because he's effectively promised more signings.

I wouldn't hold anything against Van Gaal should more transfers not go through like 'DeMono' is suggesting, although he would be more to blame than Woody should we not even move for anyone. But Louis' already signed 2 quality young players and his system is currently working brilliantly. He's said he's looking in to getting more defenders, and has stated there's a month left to do business anyway.

Vidal is hardly going to express his desire to leave if there is no concrete bid from us. If we are interested then we really should have or should be about to make a bid for him and see what happens from there.
