According to SKY sources he is our backup plan if the Rojo deal falls through.

VfB Stuttgart
On 23 July 2011, Rüdiger had his debut for VfB Stuttgart II in the 3. Liga against Arminia Bielefeld.[2]

On 29 January 2012, Rüdiger made his Bundesliga debut for VfB Stuttgart's first team in a home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. He had his first appearance in the UEFA Europa League on 4 October 2012 against Molde FK.

On 19 April 2013, Rüdiger extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart until June 2017.[3] He scored his first goal for Stuttgart on 1 September 2013 in a 6–2 home victory against TSG Hoffenheim.

Very limited information on him and I've never actually heard of him.

Best news of the week. To know that we have a backup plan in place..

Jesus names are getting thrown out from anywhere now.

Aren't we needing experience rather than another youngster?

Apparently he's decent on the ball and good physically, but prone to mistakes and mostly just potential rather then someone for the first team. Made his debut for the national team earlier this year though. At this point I just want us to sign somebody so we don't play wingers at left back.

Only a year older than Blakcett and Keane, I can't see the point unless he's a Varane level youngster.

I watch a fair bit of BL and sadly VfB is the team I like the most in the BL.. This kid is decent a big fella in a really poor defence. He is not what we need, and this makes just no sense... Blackett is more composed, and better on the ball..

What is the obsession with this experience??.. Johnny Evans has 8 years of top flight experience, Rafael -6 and Jones and Smalling-4 years.

I agree they are injury prone. But just assuming buying a old defender would bring stability is non sense. We might just buy Glen johnson and Upson then??

Corrected for you. :)

So I take it he's another player who's at the level of Blackett and Keane? Not what we need. We need an accomplished player, someone who can lead our back line.

No hes more Jones/Smalling level tbh given he has played 2 full seasons for the first team at CB. He is miles ahead of Keane and Blackett in terms of development. Has also been capped for the German national team. Would be only useful as a young signing though similar to Jones/Smalling we need more experience, however wouldn't mind if he was one of 2 CBs coming in.

No, he's way better than those two, but still a joke if this is our plan to succeed Vidic.

Smalling, Jones and Evans are our succession plan to Rio and Vidic. But they keep getting injured and in case of Smalling and Jones played at right back often. They are young and can develop if they can get a season going. The main problem is injuries and that's why we don't need a readymade CB. We need someone who can come in and be happy to sit on the bench and get fewer games.

According to people who watched the game against Swansea our current options aren't good enough.

He is a bit crap. Would be a baffling signing to be honest.

We need players to come in and improve the team I don't see the point in buying back up players- we did that with Buttner bebe obertan diouf etc and it's a waste of time.

To compete we need at least 4 players to go into that team- we desperately need a dominant powerful midfielder like KHedira and a pacy forward player like Reus or DI Maria.

A defender or two is needed- vlaar anyone ?

Who is this? Do we have any analysis from our German fans?

Rüdiger is decent technically and fairly strong and quick, but his positioning is poor, he's prone to brainfarts and a walking red card. There's really no way we should be signing him.

If we were to go for a young German centre back, Robin Knoche should be our choice.

Money no object, break transfer records, no fixed budgets and we come up with a 21 year old who's probably not much better than what we've got. Absolutely ridiculous.

Sounds like he shares similar traits to our other targets this year (Vermaelen, Rojo, Vertonghen...) maybe LvG feels their deficiencies will be shrouded in a back three? And on his ball playing skills - he's right footed yes, but is he comfortable on either foot?

Any defense would look bad with our midfield, there in lies our problem. The amount of space sigurdsson had for the second goal is criminal. Also, our wingbacks/ wingers were at fault for both goals as much as the defenders.

Defending is a team game and if the players in the front of the pitch are not up to it, then any defender is going to struggle. That is why we have been so easier on the counter attack even during the last few years even with Rio and Vidic in the team.

Knoche was better or rather more consistent last season but he's also a year older and plays in a better team.
TBH, I don't think either will ever play for a team who's goal is to go far in the CL -or even reach the Top 4 in the Prem.

Ginter should have been the guy to look at if there was an interest in a young German CB.
He's younger and more talented than either Knoche or Rüdiger.

Anyway, there really isn't a CB in the Bundesliga who's both attainable and good enough to improve United's defense.

Promising player, but under Rojo's level.

He got what it takes to go really far in his career, but he is prone to simple mistakes and can't always control his emotions on the field. From his mindset, he still needs a few years to grow.

He's big, strong (hasn't filled out that much yet but definately knows how to use his body strength, which will only grow), good on the ball and really fast. He's right-footed, which makes it strange that he is mentioned as 'backup option' since we didn't have to dig that deep if we wanted a right-footed player.

If we were going for him, we would have missed out on Ginter, who was available on the cheap and is further in his developement.

I'd expect Rüdiger to cost 8-12m and from a 'value' point of view, I'd say we'd get more if we move for Rüdiger than Rojo, though Rojo is more what we need.
