I think he was never a 35 million player. He has a 20 million release clause (50/50 between Real Madrid and Benfica). His contract is up next year also.

Another one of long Fergie's long term targets ( along with Strootman) that appears to have been nixed by Moyes. Squad would be in such better shape if we'd signed those two 12 months ago. :-(
If we wanted him we'd have signed him, on the first, second, third, fourth or fifth time we were said to have signed him way before Moyes came anywhere near us.

We obviously didnt want him, with the portuguese media having some fun linking him like everyone else to us.

Or did Moyes also "nix" Gaitan?

Mental, for that price he was definitely worth it IMO.

Why do other big club's seem to get fair prices, but we get stung with 30+ deals with almost every player

I really think Garay was never a go. I think it was more media hype from Portugal than anything. Sort of like Gaitan was in the summer of 2012.

Bayern Munich close to find a deal for Garay from Benfica for 15m € according to Gazzetta

Ed Malyon ‏@eaamalyon 20h
Garay to Zenit seems done. Benfica won't buy to replace him, but will bring Lisandro Lopez back from loan. I rate him. Scores goals too.

As you can see these two stories are only 3 hours apart.
So having signed for us 5 times in 3 transfer windows, he's now signing for 5 other clubs that arent us.

I did not like that option, especially last year, and especially after watching Benfica in last year's Europa League against NU, Kiev and Chelsea. I'd say he has not really been all that great to be a first team member here and we don't need such a expensive and old squad player/cover. But this year's EL changed my mind. I am not exactly for him, but i am not against him either. Somehow with Van Gaal i don't think this transfer is gonna happen. We will probably go for one of the young dutch CBs. Which i think is a worse option, but lets see.

There's been nothing new about a move to Bayern in the German media at all, only speculation about the reports from South-America. Even the Portuguese sources are only referring to the Argentine papers who broke the story.

I'm beginning to suspect this rumor is not what it seemed after reading the reports from Clarin, but maybe the story will pick up steam in the German media later this week. We'll see.

Some people will believe every story about United in the media
It looked more than just a media bullshit. Garay said himself (with quotes and other shit) that he thought that he will come here but then when Moyes became the manager things changed.

No. It was actually "O Jogo" bs. Garay never said anything like that. He said "This has been spoken for a long time and there are alot of rumours but i don´t know anything about that".

Portuguese media says it was 6 million. I bet it was to screw up Real Madrid and their 50% rights. I think we will see another Benfica player move to Zenit with an inflated price to compensate this 6 million.

Edit: It really is 6 million since it has already been reported to the portuguese CMVM (stock exchange). Here´s the link, it´s official now

I read it was 6 mil to Benfica, total to be about 15 mil. Third party and Real get the rest according to ownership.

€6m is Benfica's cut, the other €9m is to RM & 3rd party.

Third party? I thought it was a 50/50 deal between Real and Benfica. No other party involved

It's a bad deal for Benfica but not much more they could have done if he was out of contract this time next year.

Yep. It´s their fault for negotiating him so close to the end of the contract. Guess his contribution on the pitch compensated that. Supposed we will sell Rojo in the same type of crappy deal thanks to this kind of fund business deal

Yeah thought they'd at least renew his contract last year after he didn't end up moving. Yeah Rojo's quite heavily owned by a third party too isn't he? Something like 65/75%? Doubt we'll see much of what he's sold for if/when he goes.

We have about 30% of Rojo´s Sporting rights. We will get peanuts for him. I won´t be sad because he isn´t exactly my cup of tea. I mean he´s a decent player but with too many concentration lapses and disciplinary issues.

Looks like it´s really a 6 million deal. It´s 2,4 million for Benfica, 3 million for Real Madrid and 600k for the fund. That´s a really low ammount. Benfica only had 40% of the sporting rights. Looks like another shaddy deal like Roberto to Zaragoza.

Did Moyes really pull the plug on this?

Fantastic CB.
Why would we have needed 6 centre backs?

MoTM today though and has been great all World Cup, Zenit have got a great bargain.

People were calling him a Real Madrid reject this time last year. We didn't need him last year, with our CBs. We wanted a midfielder this time last year. Put things into context and everything makes sense.

Having his debut at Zenit. Already at fault for a goal in what's shaping up to be a shock Zenit's defeat in the CL qualification against some cypriot side.

PS Although Witsel was shown an extremely harsh red card! Second time in CL, first was in the last season against austrian side, also quite harsh and probably not a red.

Everytime I see him mentioned that is all I think about, all the time times we were said to have a "done deal" with him.
