With Moyes you never felt we were developing or he had any real plan for us, just to try and immitate Sir Alex's style, even though Van Gaal has had a similar start in terms of results to Moyes you can see the difference, his philosphy, the play style we're moving towards, he says the right things etc. Love him.
Correct.

Is it me, or does that also say Van Persie at the tip of the diamond, with Rooney and Di Maria a nominal front two?
Its not just you. Van Gaal actually said after the game that he started Van Persie as a #10 but moved him to #9 after Di Maria was injured, adding that Van Persie played better in the striker's role than in the withdrawn one.

Quite possibly. Van Persie was playing deeper first half until Di Maria's injury.

Cheers, I missed the first few minutes so didn't see that. Interesting decision (to start with) in that case, I was sure we'd see Mata at the tip and Di Maria on the left of midfield. The Van Persie of the last few seasons doesn't really strike me as an ideal no.10.

He was playing deeper. I can imagine that LVG wanted him to be involved more to build up his confidence

M.U.M. knows best.
I just feel really comfortable with him in charge, its almost like having a late 90's or mid 2000's Fergie back in charge, You just know he knows what he is doing. He is one of the all time best coaches/managers it has to be said.
I totally agree with that.
I feel he is shaping the team into something special.

One of the best things is his adaptability - we've seen two very different types of performances/styles of play in the last week. Counter-attacking, defensive against Arsenal, possession-based dominance today.

He needs to get his head out of his ass, Rvp wouldn't start for Fulham..
Wilson should get the nod over him any day of the week..
And Wilson... Rvp is mildly putting it terrible
Why? He isnt shit, Rvp is..
Nothing against Rvp and I think he's in a need of a break.. But he isnt firing on all so others should get the nod..
Why? His overall play was shit.. Even if he smacked that shot.. Falcao was more involved in those 15min..
Ok i guess he has been fantastic lately... Even a striker at Fulham could manage to touch the ball 12 times vs Arsenal...
It's never a good idea to talk in absolutes or extremes. It has the potential to make you look rather foolish.

I don't think anyone is going to disagree that RVP has been out of form of late. The manager has said it, he's said it himself. His confidence is low, but he has historicity as a fantastic striker. Falcao has been injured, and so our only other option has been an 18 year old James Wilson. I, for one, trust Van Gaal to make the right decision. He clearly wasn't going to throw Falcao into the starting xi after just coming back from injury, so his selection was sensible, and untimely rewarded, today.

Fans can be very fickle and have little patience. Wasn't long ago that RVP was banging them in for us. The match going fans have been great but he's been slated on the forums. We are all guilty of this sort of thing, at one time or another, but it was rather heart warming to see you end up looking like a tit.

What's the obsession with Fulham btw? Fairly certain they'd be delighted to have robin Van Persie, despite your adamance to the contrary.

Some of our passing today... Just wow! I mean it wasn't very incisive but that kind of stuff can totally demoralize your opponent even without scoring goals. You can see the team growing in confidence and a new style of play emerging, but still having the pace and flair that the United team should always have.

I've zoomed in on the picture, hopefully we can figure out who's who, or even see his notes!
Can't read the nores obviously but the team looks like:
De Gea
Valencia Smalling Rojo Young
Carrick
Mata. Fellaini
Van Persie
Di Maria. Rooney

Perhaps we can thank his world cup performances for some of his pragmatism? It's good to see him get the team drilled into playing different styles.

Nothing against the guy.. He has been in terrible form for a long time. And as I said I think he's in dire need of a vacation.. His general play has been way off and confidence is very low. His shot today was fantastic and he looked better but apart from that goal he just doesn't look right. Wilson should be getting the nod over him at home vs Hull as these are the games he should be getting his chances as Rvp hasn't been pulling up any trees.

For me Persie had an ok game today but if that goal hadnt hit the back of the net I wouldnt be the only one saying this. And Fulham isn't a hobby of mine just the first rubbish side that came to my mind. And I am very happy for Rvp as I feel he really needs this, the way he acted after having hit that shot tells it all same as with his goal vs Chelsea. But after this performance today from United who am I to doubt the manager..

I always felt it was going to take time for the team to not just understand is idea, but also to be able to put it into practice. It obviously involves more than just understanding it, it's also about replacing previous styles, getting to grips with your new role, understanding the roles of everyone else in that formation and above all else, being consistent in that role. That is what the squad has been expected to do and it was always going to take a bit of time to become used to this new style. Hopefully this is a sign that there is more confidence and belief in what LVG wants and more freedom for our more creative players.

Apart from his strike today, he has been quite shite. His first touches and dribbling today made him look completely past it and almost seems like a liability in the build up play lately. It's 'acceptable' to have him on the pitch when we are absolutely dominating teams, but in more demanding games he needs to be dropped. RVP of 2+ years ago would be very disappointed with the RVP we see today, and that is why we're disappointed too.

I love this season! And it's all down to LVG!

I can see improvements, I can see different styles of play already, different formations etc....It's damn exciting!!

I resented last year, a lot of people calling out others for being "plastic fans" but, I don't think anyone can complain this year. If they did, it might be slightly harsh. With the exception of Leicester and having to play our way through injuries 99% of the time, I've really enjoyed it. And that's what following Manchester United should be about!

He never seems fazed by injuries. He makes an adjustment and the team gets on with it. Flexible coach, flexible players.
One thing I like is that he doesn't look to make excuses about anything. Yes we've had loads of injuries, but he doesn't attribute our poor start to that, just says we have to improve. When asked about it obviously he says it, but at the start of the season I noticed even when penalty decisions don't go our way, he just says that's life.

Saw someone recently criticize him kind of for not going to the fourth official more often to pressure the refs into giving us more pens.. really? He seems to care a lot more about winning fairly without any kind of the "dark arts" of football, so to speak.

I just trust him. It's really satisfying to have a manager who continues to show positive signs in every game.

Give him as long as he wants. We've needed the reworkings he's doing for so long now, and I love that the process has finally started and that we've got the right kind of footballing mind pulling the strings. This season will be a huge upwards turn if we keep building form until the end of the season.

Love his mentality in that BBC interview. It would be so easy to do what 99% of managers would do in response to that momentum question and say something like "Yes, hopefully we can go on a run, looking forward to Stoke on Tuesday..."

But he's always demanding improvement. "No, too soon". Love it.

Very clear on my tablet, RVP deeper in order to involve him more, Fellaini originally was on the left, Di Maria in the Robben role.

formation wise all all formations lvg adopted are variants of 2323. rather than saying it a 442 diamond this is better to say it a 2332.

carrick was playing an exact role of a traditional center half which is the sole of such a team play. young and valencia played as the left half and right half respectively. fellaini & mata were the left inside and right inside which are supposed to be the pillars in the midfield. the best ever players in this role are xavi & iniesta. in 2323 there was no such thing as no 10 we know nowadays. the job was shared by the two insides (no 8 & 10) to support a 3 forwards line (either 3 strikers or any striker+winger combinations). for we don't have such supper insides here the system was varied to add a no 10 on top of them to support 2 strikers upfront, and the 2 side halves are then supposed to cover up the width in the front line also.

rojo & smalling are the two full backs to cover up everything in the back line and that is where this term derived from.

probably it's time for robin to try something new if he's lost his pace of which any prolific striker cannot miss. he is there to direct the play and maybe we shall see a new bergkamp arising with us? putting diMaria upfront is just to imitate the role of robben in the nederland wc squad, giving him a free role and trying to utilize his creativity in the front line to support another striker to break down the opponent defense.

Rooney scored his 11th goals in 15 games this season for club and country as United beat Hull 3-0 on Saturday. And the Dutch coach is delighted Rooney has responded so positively to being made the Reds' skipper.

“Before I came here, of course, I had heard of his reputation,” said Van Gaal.

“But, from the first day, he was not the Wayne Rooney that people had talked about.

“He was, in my eyes, a great example in training and, of course, he has achieved a certain level. I think he shall always play with me — although, when he is in a bad moment, maybe I can be convinced to change him.

“But he is my captain now. He is the men who sets the example for the other players. So I’m very pleased.

“I have the impression that he lives for football and that he likes being the captain of Manchester United.”

Van Gaal added: “Of course, being captain of England helps him to be a better captain of United.

“He has more experience. But I have to remind everyone that I put him first as captain. Roy Hodgson followed my advice.

“I can make every player better. I’m sorry. That’s arrogant, but I can.

I think the diamond was more of our defensive setup than attacking which was more varied

That's the feeling I have as well, that we're on the verge of something special. So far, the chips haven't exactly been falling as we'd want them to, but the team is progressing and the U turn from last season is such a joy to watch. I've said it elsewhere, but we don't need much for the team to just click and go on a run, the signs are there.

It was also pretty clear when watching the game. Apparently the team warmed up as a 3-5-2 and French TV interpreted it as LvG trying to con Bruce. Which happened, as Bruce switched his own system after 30 minutes.

They were a goal down after 30 mins though, that would have had more to do with their change in system surely?

It's a Mourinho like front. Be a big enough man to divert all the attention to yourself and protect your players from the negativity at the same time.

Well... yeah. Their initial system was a complete mess and they weren't getting anywhere and were trailing. Bruce decided to adapt as best he could, even though it was unsuccessful in the end.

At this rate we'll have more injuries than points come the end of the season

Can't help but feel it's all beginning to come together for us, and Van Gaal now though. Regardless of whether he underestimated how long it'd take, we're getting there, and it's a fecking joy to watch.

You can really see the difference in our ability to cope with injuries as a result of the huge investment over the last few transfer windows. Other clubs would have had their season derailed if they suffered our injury list as they don't have the big name players in reserve that we do.
