Sensible move if true?

Update: Just ruled himself out of the job.

I'd say it would be odd. Odder than Pardew to Palace.

Bruce isn't exactly doing too well with hull.

He took a Hull side that had no business getting promoted up and then kept them up while getting them into the FA Cup final.

This season he has had a horrible time with injuries from what I remember. He is a good manager and would be a suitable replacement for Pardew should he decide to leave.

Bruce is a decent manager and like other have said, he did one hell of a job to get Hull promoted then get them to a FA Cup final which they came so close to winning. If he get's offered the Newcastle job then I reckon he'll take it.

He is a bit of a yo-yo manager. I think Bruce is doing with Hull what he did with Sunderland. He is an excellent championship manager unquestionably. His first seasons in the PL always seem pretty good. After which point he makes some signings and things go downhill. He seems a good impact manager but I can see this ending in tears.

Better option than Colocinni I suppose.

Means a guaranteed six points from Newcastle every season, he's not a great manager and I'm sure Newcastle should be aiming higher.

I'd love to see Brucie there! Can't see it though.

I also bet Moyes is kicking himself - he'd be a shoe in for this.

Could be just the ticket for Brucie; home-town lad and all that. I don't think the fact that he managed Sunderland will be a bar either.

Would love to see that, not sure the fans will forgive him for taking the Sunderland job though.
Trust me they will. My mate is a Sunderland fan and even whilst Bruce was in charge the fans had nothing good to say about him, he was referred to as "Agent Bruce" amongst some other uncomplimentary things.

Warnock getting the sack has completley fecked up the managerial equilibrium. It's like watching dominoes fall now.

Bruce would be ideal for the Mags if he's gets it. Doubt him managing Sunderland will bother too many geordies as long as he does alright.
Hall and Shepherd always wanted to make Newcastle a basque style club with homegrown players. It's been a long time since Newcastle had a geordie born and Toon supporting manager.
It would certainly make more sense giving it to Brucey than the likes of McCoist, who's been mentioned.
You never know with Ashley though, watch him give it to Roy Keane

Bruce is competent enough and seems more pro-foreigners than some of the bottom half managers, so that fits with Newcastle's Ligue 1 team.

I think it's a tougher job to look good in than Hull, in terms of Bruce's long-term ambitions. If Bruce finishes 8th or 9th with Newcastle, which would be good, nobody will suggest he should get a bigger job (look at Hughes now), but if Bruce kept Hull up again this year and the next and during one of those 2 seasons they somehow got to Wembley again, then maybe he does.

Seems like the better move to Newcastle would be to just appoint the best, cheap 6 month option and start tapping up good foreign managers. Save some money and use it in the summer to fill their serious holes at CB and LB and get at least one wide attacker.

Has Bruce ever showed himself to be anything other than mediocre? I think Newcastle are looking for mediorce +

Bruce isn't a great manager. I would go for someone like McClaren if I was Newcastle. But his Boro connections won't help, I suppose. But I do think he has improved since his England spell.

Imagine if hull get pulis
That'd be a hell of a coup for Hull. He's exactly what they need.
Hasnt he just spent a small fortune on new players?
Think it was a net spend of £25m, if you pardon phrase. Obviously a massive outlay for them with their limited marketing appeal etc...

Don't see why he'd leave Derby tbh. Can't see Ashley spending much in compo either

He's a decent manager is Bruce and a good man. Newcastle would probably be his best shot yet if the rumours are true so good luck to him in that regard. Although in a way I'd rather it doesn't happen as it would be good to see Newcastle fail hilariously, but not with Bruce in charge.

Given Bruce's Cup run with Hull and how desirous Newcastle supporters are for a trophy, he would certainly have that achievement in his favour, as would someone like Laudrup maybe.

Pulis on Tyneside would have the makings of the Allardyce situation i feel.

What do you expect from a man managing the likes of Birmingham, Wigan, Hull and Sunderland? I'm not sure what more he could've been expected to do. I haven't seen anyone doing any better at those clubs since.

Would have gone for Eddie Howe if I was Ashley, Bournemouth are playing great attacking football what Newcastle fans love, scored 10 more goals more then any other championship team, as well as the best gd. Reckon he would be worth a 18 month contract.

I think Bruce's contract hasn't got long to run at Hull.

Just think, he'll be reunited with Ben Arfa again.

Newcastle are no more than 10 points from staying up, and they have no chance at CL football. They should appoint someone promising and let him learn on the job.

I say hire the best young french manager they can and he'll have 19 games to get used to the Prem.

They could have a lovely almost all French team with just a few moves. the Yanga-Mbiwa sale to Roma and build around Cisse, Perez, Cabella, Siem De Jong, Sissoko, Tiote, Colback, YangaMbwiwa, Janmaat, Santon and Krul. Everyone else is average. Raid Ligue 1 for a couple of defenders (N'Koulou seems to be in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year every season) and find a winger with some pace and goalscoring threat and you've got a solid team, though still not a top 4 threat.

That's where it all sort of comes crashing down. There's no real upside for Newcastle, right? They're not getting into the top 5. At best they could be Everton or Spurs level, but they're practically there now without spending much or hiring someone risky who could improve them but may also implode. I bet they hire someone British, sell Sissoko, finish 12th and Ashley takes a drunken bath in lots of money.

Shouldn't they get a top quality manager once in a while?

Apparently Bruce has ruled himself out (according to the Guardian.)
