Apparently, Di Maria has a torn hamstring and will be out for a month.

I'm guessing he'd have had three weeks off anyway for rest and recuperation following Copa America, so not as bad as it could've been.

He should still be able to play a reasonable part during pre-season and hit the ground running for the new season.

Swap Robben for Javi Martinez in that deal, and they don't even need to give us cash. That'll do.

Seeing as it's silly season might as well post this here.

Bayern Munich will offer Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben AND CASH in exchange for Manchester United midfielder Angel di Maria.

The words, bite, bloody, hand and off spring to mind...

German newspaper Bild suggests Pep Guardiola is ready to sanction the incredible deal to land the 27 year-old as Bayern look to rebuild.
That's not even true by the way. Bild never released such a news. Even Bild wouldn't be stupid enough to create such an obvious nonsense story.

Another classic example of the British media publishing absolutely anything about transfers has come around. It's a daily thing now, but the latest Manchester United transfer nonsense is really quite something. It's been claimed that Bayern Munich are set to offer Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben plus cash in exchange for Angel Di Maria, and that has all apparently come from German newspaper Bild.

The BBC had it on their Gossip page, claiming Bild had said such a thing. The Daily Mail, Sky Sports, The Telegraph, The Daily Star, The London Evening Standard, talkSPORT, The Daily Express, The Irish Independent, Fox Sports and many more all cover the story and all reference Bild.

Yet not one of them manage to link to the actual Bild article, because there is no such Bild article. Bild have never claimed such a thing. Bild would probably value the two Bayern Munich players at more than Angel Di Maria anyway, which should have been a giveaway. Not one of those huge names of journalism has bothered to check that what they're publishing has a grain of truth in it. They've all happily published that Bild have claimed something they have not.

So where did it all come from? Twitter of course. British newspapers are tricked every week into publishing fake football stories from fake Twitter accounts or people starting rumours of reports which do not exist. Arsenal fans were taken on a merry dance regarding Arturo Vidal recently with claims of a deal being agreed before the person who started the Twitter admitted it was all a wind-up.

For the Di Maria and Bild claims an account in the name of Uli Becker tweeted that the offer would be made. Nobody bothered to check who he was, or whether his claims were correct. Nobody bothered to even check if he had a background of tweeting in German and nobody bothered to double check with Bild's website or newspaper. One little tweet from someone on the wind-up has caught out vast swatches of the media yet again.

If they don't even bother verifying their sources then why bother reading any of the transfer news at all?

Presumably they don't bother because it's all about clicks. In the unlikely event of anyone taking them to task they can claim "well we saw it on twitter".
Strange that they wouldn't just make something up that's more believable though. The second I saw the headline I actively avoided any articles because it was so utterly ridiculous. At least if the story was "Muller for Di Maria straight swap" the muppet in me might have read through it to see if there was any slightly reputable base for the rumour.

I'd rather sign no-one than that pr*ck Sterling if we were to sell AdM. Which we won't.

I wouldn't be averse to us selling him to be honest, if we can recoup the majority of what we paid (difficult because of the pound / Euro rates). I would love us to have a 100% Di Maria but Van Gaal just can't seem to fit him into the team properly and we can't have a £50m player sat on the bench half the time.

I'm not too bothered if we are selling Di Maria to PSG. I'd obviously prefer him to stay and go on to do great things but in his current form, we won't miss him too much.

The only problem is we're weakening the team significantly again. First RvP and now him, and by the looks of things we haven't got anyone lined up anytime soon! I'll be in full blown panic mode when the season starts.

I would be pretty angry if we did end up selling him. It would look embarrassing for the club to give up after just one season where a lot of our football was disjointed and we didn't have any real stand out players. Don't care how much Psg offers. We keep him and support him, instead of trying to shoot him down every time a rumour pops up.

If we end up making a loss on this I agree it would be embarrasing from whatever angle you look at it.

We paid €75m to get him and it was big coup for us:

Either we keep him in the hope he turns out to be our star player
Or if we sell him we need to get alot more than €75m for him in value and preferably not all of that would be cash but a good player + a big amount of cash

Else we'd just look like a bunch of fools that can't even keep their big coup for more than a year.

It's weird because he looked great for Real in that LCM position, quite disciplined behind Ronaldo. But since we tried him there he seemed to revert back to that flashy hit-and-miss player. Sometimes it paid off (that chip ) but othertimes not. He didn't work up front at all and by the time we tried him on the wing his confidence was shot.

If we keep him (which we should IMO) he should compete RWF position. Memphis - Rooney - Di Maria looks good on paper, two wide players who can bring plenty of pace and goals which we missed last season. He will need to work on it over summer though.

Usually I'm not bothered about how much the club gets for a player, but if we do take a significant hit on Di Maria this summer then it'll be extremely frustrating. They've got their restrictions removed and they're obviously intent on chasing him so accepting 60m euro would be pretty daft and would make the club look weak. I really hope that we hang onto him and show that we aren't going to give up on hom after one season.

I have read a bit about a potential transfer of AdM on a Bayern forum. Most of the Bayern supporters there seem to rate him very high and are of the opinion that you should not let the chance to sign a player of this calibre pass by.

What I want to say is that players of his kind are a rare breed. He is one of the 3 best players in the PL and among the top 10 in the world. I cannot see a realistic chance of us signing anybody near his quality this summer.

Our attack is crying out for adding some more quality. Selling him would really be stupid. You've to remember that Madrid only sold him to make way for their newest toy.

Can I ask why you think Di Maria will score plenty of goals as a winger?

He played six seasons in Europe as a winger in the first teams of Benifca and Madrid. He managed 40 goals in all competitions, an average of less than 7 a season. Just looking at league games he managed 25, an average of 4.2 a season. This is not even close to what really good wingers score nowadays, and I am not talking about freaks like Ronaldo and Messi, there are numerous players in the tier below those two who put Di Maria to shame as a winger.

He won't score many, but he'll bloody create a lot. He had his worst season in years and still managed 13 assists in 20 something starts.

Mendes and PSG can agree on whatever they want, but PSG will have to pay what we paid for him.

I would highly doubt United would agree to a substantially lower fee. I also highly doubt anything is happening with him at all.

PSG's E-Khelaifi already said that he's working with a budget and has to break even this transfer window. I'm sure we won't sell for a loss (why would we?) and that pretty much means this isn't going to happen with the weak Euro unless PSG sell half their team.

Getting €60m for him this Summer would be great business actually. His stock must have fallen more than that during last year, he's a year older and instead of one of the best players in the league and CL he was one of the biggest disappointments last season.

The noise won't go away about Di Maria, I can imagine us using him as a make weight for Muller/schweinsteiger?. I personally don't want to sell him but LVG clearly doesn't like him that much as a player, so perhaps it's for the best.

I don't want us selling him for peanuts though.

So the deal is getting 'hotter' with Bayern and 'almost done' with PSG? Transfer madness in full flow now.

No he hasn't, 'World Class' should recognize some sort of consistency, Di Maria has always been a cracking winger capable of creating things from nothing but he has never been consistent and therefore never been 'world class'.

PS: World Class is a nasty expression.
(JPRouve I wanted to respond to your post from the transfer thread in here just because it's the more appropriate thread for my reply).

Look at this season, for most of it he has been poor yet his chance creation, key chance creation and assists aren't far off the likes of Fabregas. On the other hand Ashley Young has been good and even Juan Mata has had a good season, Sanchez excellent, Hazard and Silva up there too but:

Young has played 23 premier league matches with 3 sub appearances totalling 2068 minutes, he has 2 goals and 5 assists averaging an assist or goal every 295 minutes.

Juan Mata has played 27 premier league matches with 6 sub appearances totalling 2309 minutes, he has 9 goals 4 assists averaging an assist or goal every 178 minutes.

Angel di Maria has played 20 premier league matches with 7 sub appearances totalling 1645 minutes, he has 3 goals and 10 assists averaging an assist or goal every 127 minutes.

Let's compare that to Sanchez of Arsenal, Hazard of Chelsea and Silva of City because not just are they their best wide players but also who scored gave them an average rating that was considerably higher than Angel di Maria for this season.

David Silva has played 32 premier league matches with 0 sub appearances totalling 2661 minutes, he has 12 goals and 7 assists averaging an assist or goal every 140 minutes.

Eden Hazard has played 38 premier league matches with 0 sub appearances totalling 3379 minutes, he has 14 goals and 9 assists averaging an assist or goal every 147 minutes.

Alexis Sanchez has played 34 premier league matches with 1 sub appearance totalling 2953 minutes, he has 16 goals and 8 assists averaging an assist or goal every 123 minutes.

Of course take statistics with a pinch of salt but you get my point, depends on how much you value productivity. Young for example has probably been better defensively and Mata at keeping possession. Sanchez, Silva and Hazard have obviously performed better than Angel di Maria overall but if you value the productivity of a player highly then there is the reasonable argument Angel di Maria has been consistent because even when he has a 'bad' game he produces things.

When United were winning in their final season under Ferguson they were praised for their ability to consistently win despite sometimes playing poor, it was said that's what champions do. In the second part of last season when Chelsea managed to win games despite playing poor sometimes it was said that's what champions do. I don't think it should be held against Angel di Maria that he is productive but has more poor games than most world class players (since he is still productive in those games) just like 2013 United or 2015 Chelsea are not any less of a team just because those respective sides were very clinical but their performances weren't exactly great.

@Empire don't worry about me, I know Di Maria, I love Di Maria, I rate him, and like I said last summer Di Maria can't be judge with stats, because he is a freak he can provide assist even when he is having an awful game.

I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that with Memphis here he feels after last seasons form Young and him are good enough to get rid of ADM.

I wouldn't be shocked if he left at all. I'd be the wrong decision IMO. I think LvG doesn't like the amount he gives the ball away one bit. Ancelotti said the same thing about him.

Yeah but stats support that argument! If we were judging him by stats he'd have had a good season but it depends on what stats you value, it depends on what you mean by 'consistent', Chelsea last season were consistently clinical and that's why they were champions despite not showing consistency in their performance, if Angel di Maria has been consistently productive even if his performance hasn't been consistent then surely he could still be considered world class?

I know you said 'world class' is a nasty expression, I don't know exactly what people mean by it but I'd say Angel di Maria is one of the very best wingers in the world.

I don't want Di Maria to leave and I don't think he will. Despite all these rumours, Di Maria has already said, on several occasions, that he'll stay at United and wants to win trophies with us and is determined to do better next season. He'll know that if he leaves, he'll forever be remembered as a United flop and I don't think he wants that. He's a player of great quality and reputation and I don't think his ego could handle it.

I also don't think we have plans to sell him. There was an interview with Bryan Swanson on Sky a while ago (when the rumours of Di Maria to PSG were strong) and he said that we have no intention of selling him and he's a big part of Van Gaal's plans. I don't think this stance has changed. We're not going to give up on our record signing after one average season - United doesn't work like that. We have given way too much time to many average players in the past and we're supposed to sell a player like Di Maria after one unconvincing season? I don't think so.

These rumours are shite as well. On one hand we have the Di Maria to PSG rumours - according to Le Parisien and this Foot365 crap from yesterday, both citing a potential 60 million euros fee. They also mention Van der Wiel, which proves they're talking shit. We already have Darmian, so we don't need Van Der Wiel. Seems like plain crap or rehashing old stories due to PSG's ability to spend more freely this summer. It's lazy journalism.

On the other hand we have Di Maria to Bayern rumours, with a potential deal involving Schweinsteiger. It sounds like another shit, baseless rumour. Bayern might have been interested in Di Maria this summer, but they've already signed Douglas Costa for big bucks. They also still have Robben and Ribery and even though they're struggling with injuries, what happens when Di Maria, Costa, Ribery, Robben and Gotze are available at the same time? Signing Costa seems enough for this summer.

I don't think Bayern would get away with just giving Schweinsteiger + money for Di Maria. We'd surely demand someone like Muller in the negotiations, just like we've done with Ramos in the negotiations with Madrid for De Gea.

Pretty much. The pace on the counter from those three would be great, we know Memphis has an eye for goal and Di Maria has plenty of creative ability. Plus, he would be cutting in on his left foot so should be able to score a few from there himself. Add Rooney to the mix and I think it would bring a good balance of work rate and flair.

@Empire Those stats comparing Alexis and Di Maria with Hazard are even better than they first appear considering Hazard takes penalties for his team.
