Dele Alli is England's best young midfielder playing in Turkey

I need to watch Spurs/Alli a bit more. I seem to be in the minority of 1 who thinks he's good, but a wee little overrated because he pops up in the box and scores a good number of goals. Some spectacular ones to boot.

To me, he's very lampard'esque. A bit more agile but not at lampard's finishing ability (yet). He's still young of course. But like I said, I could be very wrong as I don't watch him that often. Maybe he is one of the Prem's best midfielders as he's being hailed.

To those who do watch him. What's his best position? I've seen him used in a variety of positions but #10 seems to be where he's most often? How would you describe his playing style? He's more of a direct goal threat than a sublime passer/dribbler to control the tempo isn't he? He's got a good work rate as well, from what I gather.

@GlastonSpur
I think I am in the same minority (of 2 posters it seems) who feel he is good but is being overrated quite a fair bit because of how easily he made the transition into PL from the Championship (and also because he is English). I like what I see of him but as you said he has a tremendous knack of getting into the box and scoring some useful (sometimes brilliant) goals. He is tenacious and is decent on the ball.

Although we have a player exactly like him in Herrera who should be one of the first players on the team sheet. For some reason though, the grass always seems greener on the other side.

Yeah he's talented, no doubt. Especially considering the price they got him for and what he's probably worth now. But it's a difficult situation for us - it seems no matter which player we bring into our side, they'll end up struggling, whereas everything seems to be working like clockwork at Leicester and Spurs.

I think I'll definitely try and watch him a bit more, in future. It could well be preference/bias though as well. I'm a huge fan of the Verratti, Modric, Xavi, Iniesta type midfielders, over the Lampard, Pogba, Gerrard type. If that makes sense.

If there is one midfielder I would like in our squad now, it is Modric (in his prime). Someone who can dictate the tempo, play the killer passes and also not bad defensively. Verratti is another I would love to see in our jersey.

I'd happily swap Mata for him.

He's going to explode next season.
Hodgson would probably still take him to the international friendlies. He loves his injured players.

Verratti, considering his age, is my muppet dream. But that's not happening. It's Madrid/Barca, in all probability, if he ever leaves PSG.

Wonderful player. Thing is, if we do plan on buying him, do we spend huge money now on the while the hype is there or risk playing less or twice as more in a few years?

I would love him at United but I can't see him leaving Tottenham this summer.
Spurs are going to be in a constant battle this summer with regards to holding on to their most talented players, Kane and Alli in particular will draw plenty of interest from the big clubs around the globe, whether they sell or not is another matter entirely. A lot will depend on Potchettino either moving on to a bigger club or staying and finishing what he begun.

It's going to be a big summer for Spurs and their future ambitions.

You are absolutely right about Pochettino, if he goes it will be another story and I could see both Alli and Kane wanting out if that happened. The players at Spurs seems to really like him and if he stays I think they will stand by him for at least another season, they are a club on the up and next season they will also have CL football so no hurry for anyone of them to go now.

You're right to say that he hasn't yet got Lampard's finishing ability (and may never have, because that's a very high bar to reach), but on the other hand I'd say his ball control-skills, mobility, versatility, tackling, pace and energy levels are better than Lampard's were. He's more combative than Lampard was, but still passes the ball well and uses it intelligently. I'd guess he'll end up scoring less than Lampard, probably a lot less, but rack up more assists.

Pochettino now used him mainly in the #10 position, but earlier in the season he sometimes played in CM alongside Dier (where he was also very effective), with Eriksen as the central AM. However, when Dembele recovered his form, he was deployed in CM alongside Dier, with Alli being shifted to #10 and Eriksen moving (nominally at least) to the left of the attacking three behind Kane.

In potential at least, some have compared him to Lampard, some to Gerrard and some to Robson, whilst Pochettino has compared him to Pogba.

However, back in January Pochettino said: "A player like Dele Alli, we need to help him to improve, not to put him in a box. When he plays like a No. 10 he makes the movement like a striker and when he plays No. 8 or No. 6 he plays like a holding midfielder. He is very clever and that's his best quality. It's how he reads the game."

My spurs mate says Alli is being overated. He says his touch and passing are not up to the standard they should be. Granted he says he scores some cracking goals, but he says they seem to paper over some of the poor footballing performances.

I personally still rate Barkley as a better footballer and all rounder than Alli, but I'm glad both are English and pushing to be in the team for the euros.

Whenever a new English talent comes along they go through a period of being overrated and underrated and then either turn out to be very good or a bit average. Alli is in the first stage of this at the moment. Kane is in the very good category and Barkley for whatever reason still is criminally underrated in my opinion. He had a poor season previously but this season he's back to his best and has been excellent. Not surprised though as some people were writing off Kane at the beginning of this and saying he was a one season wonder. It's just an English thing.

Yeah, he's still in a very early development phase. I really rated Cleverley when he started out for us as well. I let the hype (or hope!) get the better of just letting them develop and see how it turns out.

Thanks for the response Glaston. I agree on all those attributes above vs Lampard. I was never the biggest Lampard fan, but at his very best he was surely "world class" in his position (some will debate it of course). It's going to be interesting watching Alli develop and see how good he becomes. But as you mentioned Poch said, it's best to not try and box him for now, until he develops a lot more.

Lampard wasn't just a goal-scoring AM he plays box-to-box most of the time, and the amazing part about him was that he averages almost 20 goals per season in a role where most players struggle to hit above 10 goals. At his peak he was the second best player in the world and in my opinion was an even better player than Gerrard.

I'd be pleased for Alli if he can reach Lampard's level, at his current stage I think he will eventually become an even more technically accomplished player than what Lampard was. However, he still has a long way to go before he can match Lampard's efficiency and effectiveness on the pitch.

I'd break the bank for him. He's the best English talent of his generation. . the performance he put in yesterday was beyond what Barkley can give you, showed so much footballing savvy.

Barkley is also potentially a really good player but Delle Alli looks like a dead cert to be something special and is ready right now to be starting in Champions League ties for top clubs. He is fearless. He reminds me of Lampard in terms of positions he takes up but he is so much more talented than Frank... if he can show the same professionalism as him, the world is his oyster.

I'd say you're mate hasn't got a clue. I like Barkley but Alli is already superior and will only go on to get better. He's excellent and could go on to be a genuinely phenominal talent. One of the World's best. Spurs are very lucky.

It's his view, he watches and goes to a lot of games. I don't watch Spurs enough to give an opinion on Alli throughout the season.

As for Barkley, he's playing in a team that is very hit and miss currently. Stick Barkley in this Spurs side playing the same role as Alli and I think he would be a revelation, much like Alli. I also think that the two of them could play together if they have Dier behind them.

I'd take both at United over Mata in the CAM role, I think they would give us that drive and unpredictability that Mata can never give us. Having either in our side would be a good starting point from changing the look of our team for the positive.

It's amazing to think that less than a year ago he was playing in League 1 and now he's a just put in winning MoTM performance against the World Cup holders.

Anyone know which other players have seen their stock rise so phenomenally far and fast? Jamie Vardy springs to mind, although whilst he's risen farther considering he began in a non-league club, his rise has taken place at a much older age and a over longer period of time.

I prefer Barkley too, but as you said, they're two very good talents to have.

As for the two playing above Dier, that was done against France and we played very well. I'd like to see it more often.

Both would be exciting and offer goalscoring threat but trying to get any in this market will be tough much like Pogba. The days of us buying up the top domestic talent is not as easy as it used to be with the money of the TV deal and oligarchs flying around! But Ali and Barkley certainly fitted SAF profile.

That would be the best thing Barkley could do for his career right now and it would be brilliant for English football. But the way football works, it wont happen and when he leaves Everton it will be a huge fee and big wages, to a club which wont be optimal for him as a footballer. I thought Barkley and Ali looked very good together for England and they'd both benefit from playing with Eriksen in a 3 behind Kane. Barkley, Ali and Kane playing together, everyday in Spurs amazing training facility, under Poch, would be awesome for English football.

Yes, Spurs have a new stadium to fund and so won't at all be in the big money market for players like Barkley. But we already have Lamela, who has been playing well and would have to be dropped from the first XI to accommodate Barkley in a three behind Kane ... so we don't have that much need for Barkley.

I watch all Spurs games as my family are all Spurs fans. Spurs fans are insanely biased where Lamela is concerned. He is a silky version of Dirk Kuyt. Whenever Spurs lose you can be sure their fans will be praising Lamela for his work rate and closing down etc. But if you'd had a player who produced more goals and assists in his position, you'd be 5 points clear at the top of the Prem. He's the weak link in your 1st team. He's still a good player, but to take the next step, and look to get 85 points plus in a season, you'll need another Ali and Eriksen standard player.

As for not being the market for a big money player, I think that depends on where you finish. You could have and extra £30 million in revenue coming in that wasn't budgeted for. And the stadium isn't news. For some reason football fans and the media talk about you stadium as if it's come from nowhere and suddenly Spurs are going to have to start paying for it. Levy will have been financially preparing for your stadium for a decade. In the last 5 or 6 years, haven't you made a surplus from transfers? Haven't you bought up all the building etc on Tottenham High Road and at the same time reduced the amount of "affordable" housing, whilst at the same time the government is spending millions on regeneration? Right from the very start, that would have always been at the heart of Levy's plan. Levy and Spurs are going to to do very well out of this stadium and the belt tightening just means normal business for you. Your stadium project is already well over a decade old and for good reason. Levy now has everything is place, yet your stadium project is still spoken about like the Arsenal one. Arsenals stadium took just 7 years from inception to completion. Spurs have been buying up land around WHL for 12 years.

I agree to some extent that the stadium won't be as big a drain on available transfer cash as some believe for reasons you've given - and also because I'd guess that Levy will pull off lucrative deal for naming rights and other sponsorships. However, in total the whole project may cost Spurs up to £750m (some of which has already been paid of course), which is a massive sum for Spurs to finance.

Lamela has improved a lot this season and will likely improve further next. He's scored 9 goals so far this season, though admittedly only 3 in the league, plus 5 league assists. As you say he's silky, but at the same time very combative and a very intelligent user of the ball. All in all I wouldn't see Pochettino justifying a huge cash outlay on Barkley just to replace Lamela.

Barkley if he's sold will go for a large amount of money, given today's market and the number of wealthy clubs after him. I'm pretty sure Spurs won't be in the business of competing for him given the money likely to be involved. I'd also say we'll have more pressing needs this summer - such as backup striker.

Was Scholes at 19 better than Alli now? Because that is what Fergie is saying.
No he wasn't anywhere near as good as Alli is atm.

I think Alli has all the talent to be considered in that tier of players, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard etc assuming be fulfils his potential. All the talent in the world.

He is an absolute star in the making. Along with Kane.

They are the real deal.

Barkley would cost easy £50m+ in this market. No way will he be going to Spurs, a club that is a peer of Everton. If he leaves, it will be big money to City or United, if i had to guess.
