So quick to throw our current players under the bus when a brand new signing comes in. He shouldn't get 7, 10 or 11. Give him 14.

The number 7 seems to be a poised chalice for anyone since Ronaldo so I really don't want Martial to inherit it

Feck numbers. Just put a big Z. There's only one Zlatan.

His numbers at past clubs:

Milan 11
PSG 10
Barcelona 9
Inter 8

Sweden 10
Ajax 9
Juventus 9

United... 7?

Basically he's not arsed about his number really. Don't want him to take 9 off Martial. 7 or 11 for me.

Memphis and Januzaj have 7 and 11. They don't just take numbers off players.

Re. The OP. Personally I would have retired the number 11 shirt.
Retire a number and you can never again say "No player is bigger than the club"

I'd not really want Ryan Giggs and United bound together forever that romantically either. Keep it on the pitch.

Numbers 2 and 3 are vacant.
While 4 and 5 are taken by injured Jones and error-prone Rojo :houllier:

Memphis was awful last season and he has the emblematic No.7, and Januzaj that never plays wear the 11 :(

But that's a good point. Shaw should take No.3 and maybe Bailly or a possible future signing, for example Fabinho should be No.2 :)

I doubt people would want to give him 7 if Martial was given 7, but Memphis? He doesn't deserve that number.

-1+8?
-Or big numbers like 88 or 89?
-But ideally no. 7 or 11 (and no. 8 if Mata gets sold :( or 10 if Rooney moves to China :nono:)

I don't care whatever number he takes but Martial should keep the number 9 unless he personally wants to take the number 7. You guys forget that in the long run martial is more important to the future of this club.

memphis can feck off to another number for all I care.
I think Martial is the next face of Man United. I'd give him the 7 shirt at the end of this season.

No way he is going to take someone's number unless that player agrees to give it away like when Fellaini agreed to give his 31 to Bastian. Ibra will take any of the unallocated numbers that are free. Why upset the team harmony by taking someone's number

Email I had from Kitbag overnight had a United shirt with Ibra 9 on the back, don't they run Uniteds online store?

Other than Di Maria,it's just been worn by poor players.
Valencia wasn't a poor player when he took it
Memphis didn't come with a reputation of being a poor player

Valencia relinquished the 7 shirt.
Valencia gave it up himself. Fellaini gave up the 31 willingly for Schweini. I don't think the club has ever said to a player "listen we're gonna need your shirt number back to give it to another player".

Didn't he have the #8 at Inter under Mourinho?
Correct.

Martial sees himself as a striker, so I doubt he would want to switch to #11... and Memphis' ego is too big to just give up the #7 after preaching so much about the number prior to the season beginning last year.

I actually like the #8, he had some of his absolute most glorious moments wearing it. I hope Miki gets the #11 then.

He didn't say "eight" in that film, looks more like "ey".
I'm not a professional lip reader, but doesn't look like he's saying 8 at all....

*Edit*

Unless there is actually sound on the film, and my computer just fecked up :)
