Guillermo Varela Olivera
Mar 24, 1993 (23)
Uruguay
1.73 m

The Uruguayan youngster was one of several to be promoted through the ranks in 2015/16, and handled himself impressively after being thrust into the starting line-up in Wolfsburg, just three days after making his first-team bow against West Ham at Old Trafford.

“It gave me a kind of inner calm to say that I could compete at the level of the Champions League,” he said after the game in Germany.

From featuring in two of Europe’s premier competitions to scoring the title-winning goal for Manchester United’s Under-21 side, last season saw Guillermo Varela make his biggest impact within the game to date.

Looked impressive today in midfield. Comfortable on the ball, showed some tactical awareness and solid defensively- even though he didn't have to defend much.

Could it be his new role with the options of Darmian, Valencia and Fosu-Mensah at RB?

I think he's still very likely to be sold. He's 23 now and the options ahead of him at RB are already stocked, let alone a random resurgence in midfield. He's a dead ringer for Messi though, so I guess he has that going for him.

Much better than Rooney in midfield.

think he was really good, I'm not surprised he started in midfield. he might be a bit too aggressive for a fullback and prone to positional mistake while not being strong enough for Mou type defender, he's not a bad passer at all

He's very good at right back in my opinion, so good going forward and aggressive in the tackle. I'd like to see him there more.

I can only imagine the comments if Van Gaal had had played him in centre midfield.

I cant decide whether we should give this kid an extended run at fb because of the glimpses of what I see or whether the similarities to Rafael are biasing me.

He certainly can run and pass the ball and has good close control. The downsides of playing him there would be his lack of positioning awareness (which is down to him never really play there before) and his lack of physique which can be a trouble when we need to defend, although he's pretty aggressive.

He's a good footballer in general so I think we can make a good use of his talent somewhere.Midfield is certainly an interesting idea of utilizing him.

I think he looked a bit confused in positioning himself last night but played some good football everytime he got the ball.

The first thing that struck me last year was how similar his looks and dribbling style to Messi:D

Somewhere they can't find me.
Don't want him gone. He really can be a good solid back up.
It'd be very selfish of us to keep him just so that we have some cover. At 23, he's no longer an up and coming player. He's obviously a talented player and could make something of his career. I'd rather sell him to a mid table bundesliga or italian club with a buy back clause.
Unless we are giving up on Darmian this early, him, Valencia and TFM would be more than enough cover for this season. Or we should just get a starter like Fabhino.

Rooney was decent in midfield tbf. He's not good enough obviously.
No he wasn't, but this isn't the time or place to discuss that. Mourinho had made it clear that he doesn't rate Rooney as a midifelder.

He played without any opposition in those final minutes, to be fair. I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

I don't want Rooney as a midfielder either. I'm just saying he's a better mid now than he is striker.

it's not saying much though.
Haha true!

His aggression might keep him here. For me it should be down to Darmian and Varella for the RB spot as specialists. TFM should be being played primarily at CB or def mid, whichever, he seems a wasted talent at RB. Valencia can slot in anywhere on the right but a 31 year old non specialist defender, who's not great at defending should not be hindering these players chances.

If Pogba were to sign then last thing he'd want to see is another right back being played in CM.

Was solid. I'd give him another season as RB or even RB backup.

As things stand, you could make an argument he's fourth choice right back at best behind Darmian, Fosu-Mensah and Valencia. Bailly and Jones can also play there and we're being linked with Fabinho.

I'll be very surprised if he's here come the end of the window.

I'm a big fan of his so whether he's played at RB or CM I don't mind so long as he stays.

We're pretty stacked with RB's even if none of them are outstanding so it makes sense to send him on loan (rather than sell completely)

Who are our RBs?
Valencia is a Right Winger/MF.
Darmian is RB, but I have not seen or heard of him for some time. So I'm not sure if he is in Jose's plans.
Mensah may be able to play in RB.
Who else?

If push comes to shove, Bailly can play RB too.

Uhm, could be because he's resting after the Euros just like other players who are resting after Euros I guess?

Darmian, Valencia, Mensah for RB it is, Varela wouldn't get a game unless Darmian/Valencia go crock mode again.

Just saw this about him going on loan to Frankfurt and I'm relieved it's only a loan; though I am of the opinion his time here is sadly up regardless. I'll follow Eintracht Frankfurt closely to keep an eye on how he's doing and, hopefully, he'll do well and earn himself a second chance here.

Seems like a top lad and he's a lovely crosser but he's 23 and he's not a great defender. Time's up I think.

Glad it's only a loan. Neither Darmian and Valencia inspire much confidence so if he does well there's a good chance he'll be back.

He's not really a bad defender. It's never been a noted weakness for him in his development, and the idea basically comes from that one nightmare game he had for the senior team, so soon after his debut and having seemingly been made first choice with no settling-in. Neglecting the fact that he was sometimes very good indeed in the handful of games before that one. And he got great reviews at Castilla. Plus without Varela we wouldn't have Rashford. He crossed for Mata's assist for Rash's first goal, and then assisted the next two himself! Without those goals he'd probably be back in the U21s and the world none the wiser.

We have a number of players Mourinho might use at RB, but not many actual RBs. Valencia might seem a more Mourinho-friendly type, but he's hardly a defensive rock himself. And Darmian, while obviously potentially a good player, is surely too delicate for Mou. Varela is a proper RB who has been brought all the way up as a proper RB, and he has real, thoroughbred quality. Could be a Bellerin for us. Imagine him and one side and Shaw on the other, our attack would instantly be so much more multifaceted.

Seems a waste to send him on loan, to me. And I'll be gutted if we sell without him getting another stab at taking the position.
