he looks promising and, while I can see other options I'd like to see us consider, I remember that Mourinho's other CB signing for us was Bailly, and I reckon I'll trust the manager.

Nothing wrong with getting more depth. We don't have proper cover for Valencia and he'll be 32 in some months. Darmian has to cover it at the moment and you won't find United fan who's happy with that. TFM is only 18 and despite being a huge prospect he's not ready. Who else is left..Young? So yes, we need a backup there.

As for CB position, we need more depth there too. What happens if Jones goes to glue factory again or Rojo gets injured/gets 3 match ban for another reckless start while Bailly is on ACON? If he isn't injured too. Smalling barely played this season due to injuries and he wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire for a while prior to that. No one wants to see Blind as a cover there.

Getting a 22 year old massive prospect as a backup and potential first choice in season or 2 is good investment in the future while also covering potential short term problems.
Depth is important, you're right, but spending over 30m for cover? I mean, you certainly have the money so why not I guess...

Do Chelsea really need any more CBs?
If you watch Cahill as much as a Chelsea fan does you'd know the answer to that. ;)

I really want Van Dijk next month. He and Luiz would be immense.

We usually get great work rate, loyalty and 100% from Scandinavian players so I'm all for this.

So we buy another youngster who is not rated by anyone of note save for a few good games????

Didnt Castles says Jose wants experienced players in the next windows because he has too may young players who are still developing in the squad?

And why do we need a CB? Promote Tuanzebe or Williams.

Every signing Mourinho has made so far in my opinion has been good . so if there is truth in this I trust him.

He desperately wanted Stones and when that failed he signed Djilobodji, Tomas Kalas, Abdul Baba, Wallace and Matt Miazga after failing to get Aymen Abdennour. Djilobodji was 26 and only played for Chelsea once, the others were all 21-22 and are all currently on loan. I think Mourinho is just obessed with defenders
Djilobodji and Miazga were fairly well known to have been club signings rather than requested by Jose and Miazga didn't actually sign until after Jose had left. Kalas was signed in 2010, Rahman is a left back and Wallace is a right back who was signed in 2012

I don't think those two have a chance unfortunately. Under Jose. I could be wrong.

For someone who has only watched a couple of YouTube videos on him, is Lindelof the Rio to Bailly's Vidic? In really simple terms?

One of José's first comments about was regarding Tuanzebe and how he immediately sees his quality on a daily basis. I think we are all far too eager to see these youngster thrown into the first team before they're ready (psychologically) and then wonder why players are ruined by the time reach 30 (just look at Rooney, Owen etc). The media are already getting on Rashford's back and he's 19!

Just because Jose isn't putting out a team with Tuanzebe, Williams, TFM, Gomes and Chong it doesn't mean Jose will never ever bring in youth.

I'd say he's closer to Vidic than Rio aswell tbh.
Yeah? He looks like he can play a bit as well? Not a proper sweeper, but comfortable covering. And he's nicknames the Iceman.

I was very unsure on Bailly but have clearly been proven wrong, thankfully. I have faith than this guy would be good if Mou is that insistent on buying him. Would be great to establish a proper CB partnership, something we haven't had since the obvious Vidic-Ferdinand.

Its just a hunch. Jose doesn't change his teams often, even for league cup games where these kids traditionally get some minutes. I know he's getting progress reports from the youth coaches but is Tuanzebe training with the first team? Again, my hunch is we won't see Williams or Tuanzebe in the first team any time soon but if they're good enough eventually they'll be involved

He's been very promising for a while. Can't say I ever paid too much attention to him when watching but plenty of big clubs have been interested in him and he is more of a ball playing defender which could compliment Bailly well. Yes, Jones and Rojo are doing well, and Jones in particular actually has the talent to make it here, but he needs to go the whole season without any injuries which I don't think anybody can see happening, no matter how well he plays. Rojo has always been capable of good performances but he's still ultimately not good quite good enough to be a mainstay or anything more then a squad player. Smalling won't ever be a key player because he sucks on the ball, so that's why we need a cb. If Lindelof can develop like Bailly looks to be developing, then why not?

Dont know about his credibility but this is what I found from twitter of this guy called Jonas Giaever.

"A thing that most don't mention regarding Victor Nilsson Lindelöf; he's about as comfortable as a central defender as he is a right back."
"In fact, Lindelöf was named as a right back in the "team of the tournament" at the under-21 European Championship in 2015. Sweden won it."

So if he is right may be jose believes lindelof can become a ivanovic type of player in future?

I'd prefer to give Fosu Mensah a chance to be back up RB to be honest.

Agreed. He's had very limited first team opportunity this season, so he hasn't had the chance to prove himself. Rojo and Jones' performances in recent weeks are prime examples of what can happen when given the opportunity.

Fosu mensah is too defensive for Jose whilst we have a striker like Ibrahimovic. Same with Shaw. Can't say anything about lindelpf. Defensive fullbacks are the future though so it depends on how quick or when we move to that ideology.

Mou loves his converted fullbacks. He seem to always have one

That Jonas guy isn't in the know or anything, but knows his European football.

According to the Ojogo newspaper which is considered as being one of the most reliable outlets in Portugal.

€70m, who's going to pay that.
Let's see... which English club has a track record of buying relatively expensive yet untested defenders?

Otamendi £35 million, Mangala £42 million, Stones £50 million, Demichellis £5 million, Javi Garcia £17 million, Nastasic £13 million, Savic £11 million.

Laporte is pretty much guaranteed City-bound if he leaves Athletic Bilbao.

I don't trust OJogo. Is this happening or is it another Gaitan/Garay?

Just a thought, can any of you see him being used as defensive midfielder?

They've got a terrible reputation in fairness. Wouldn't be surprised to see Benfica laugh of these rumours tomorrow. But maybe O Jogo can redeem themselves from years of made up gibberish by getting it correct for once. I won't get too excited over this one until a proper source prints something that looks credible.

From what I've seen, I don't think he's good enough, I would much rather Van Dijk. I think Lindelöf doesn't have enough technical ability to play DM or RB and we already have enough of better CBs. If he actually comes here, I hope I'm wrong.

Well Duncan Castles says there is definite interest.
