Either we are selling a CB (maybe 2) or possibly changing to 3 at the back?

I don't think we would go with 3 at the back but who knows.
Blind and Rojo will leave i think. Blind i am very sure now will leave or will play midfield. castles said rojo has been stopped from leaving to china for this window, so maybe he goes.

Always reports from Portugal media that we are signing player for hefty fee but the said player ends up moving to other club for far less money.

Castles was making that story up though.

He started talking about it after the Chinese window had shut and he just didn't realise.

I know next to nothing about Lindelof but I like this business,

Looking at the signing of Bailly its almost identical, almost unknown defender moving for what seems like a massive fee then makes a huge step up, Id love to see Bailly/Lindelof grow as a partnership, it could be epic with the addition of Shaw if he picked up his game and a solid RB that would be excellent.

Wonder which defender is leaving in the summer. If the rumours are true then Jose must really rate him, must see world class potential in him and that's very exciting.
Smalling is my prediction. Too slow on the ball, which will always stop him being a great defender.

Ridiculous fee, the amount of money Portuguese teams get for their players must be some kind of hidden art. Only Chelsea seem to have mastered it over here

Smalling could be in trouble to be honest

This 38M fee is huge to be honest. But for a 22 year old CB why not. He played in Europe with Benfica and at International level.

Next step is can he does it at United ? Hope so.

Mourinho is not the type of manager that will introduce a new young player slowly. If he buys him, he'll put him in contention to play.

Hope that him and Bailly plus Smalling and Jones can prove a great combinaison for us this season.

I mean, if he comes

Can't see a long term future for him now as he needs to keep playing first team football for his International aspirations and is in his prime years. Think making the team lose so badly to Chelsea of all teams has doomed him.

I'm not so sure.

Jones didn't played much the last 5 years with us. I saw something saying that since he came to United Jones only played 50% of the games.

If you stay with Smalling + Bailly and Lindelof... it's thin.

Rojo despite his good form will probably have to choose between fighting with Shaw at left back or leaving.

Meaning both of Blind and Darmian may be in trouble

I wonder if the Portuguese are like that, but Italian media just love to add everything to the fee to bulk it up (the original fee, bonuses, salary, image rights, agent fees, insurance, dental check fees, airplane tickets, taxi fee etc) to create sensation

Looking over my shoulder.
And at what price? We still struggling to create chances and when our opponents take us on the defence shakes more then the Titanic when it hits the iceberg. We shouldn't be relying on players like Fellaini to close the gaps but we do. We need consistency at the back and we shouldn't end up into a silly situation were midfielders and fullbacks have to play in CD because our CBs are too injury prone/shite to do their job.

These brood has been given their chance of consolidating a regular first team place and had failed miserably. They don't deserve a guaranteed first team place anymore and they should sweat for a first team place. Lindelof might not be Boateng but I doubt he needs to be, especially considering how easy it was for another 22 year old to quickly win his place against these gentlemen
We have relied on Fellaini in the past due to a lack of height in our team and a subsequent lack of aerial prowess. The current team has plenty of aerial ability and United are probably one of the strongest teams in the league now. Therefore, there isn't much use for Fellaini in the team any longer. I think Mourinho is coming to that conclusion as well. Blind also seems as a no contender for any of the CB spots, so that leaves us with proper CBs for those positions.

It was easy for Bailly to get a look in for a couple of reasons; one, he is bloody good, and two Jones and Rojo were injured or not trusted. Now both are playing very well. I could see the need for more centre backs, but that was before Bailly came and before our current crop started performing. It's not perfect, but as I said, I think our centre backs are the least of our worries right now. Lately, I don't see them crumbling under pressure either, and I think they've dealt with different attackers very well.

Personally I'd like to see Smalling and Jones at back but if Lindelof is a stopper in the Vidic mode then he'll be a good signing with blind or rojo as back up. Contrary to most here, I'm not sure at all about Bailly as a centre half - he's impetuous and rash. I think he could be a decent right back.

It'd be a terrible decision because he would pretty much improve anyone who went to within the league.

It is strange that we are going for another CB. We've got 4 pretty solid ones already and Blind isn't a bad back up.
It is literally the position I am least worried about. I would rather have a new player in any other position. Still no qualms about getting a new one.

I see our CB options as (in no particular order):

-Rojo
-Jones
-Bailly
-Smalling

I don't think Jose sees Blind as any sort of a centre back.

Bailly is inevitably off to AFCON soon, leaving just the 3. Jones is (still) injury prone as hell, potentially leaving us with just 2. Add to that Rojo, as much as I like him, has hardly proven himself consistently in the team bar the last few games. Our defence is hardly as sturdy as it's looking at present.

I hope this doesn't mean Bailly will be playing more games at RB.

They were not trusted for a reason. One is injury prone and the other one is rash. Nothing changed isn't it? 4 games doesn't make Jones reliable and Rojo 2 two feet tackles show that he's still rash. Hence why Mourinho is adding a new CB to the mix

I am sure that the new Duncan Edwards will keep him on the bench. He's so good and his injuries are a thing of the past and all that

Mourinho has a good track record with defenders. If we're paying 38m, he will probably be a starter next to Bailly.

Yup, this is about right.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Blind and one of Jones/Rojo/Smalling be gone in the summer too.

Hope it's not true. If it is, then another club played by Mendes and portuguese propaganda. I mean, he is a tidy decent defender, but he won't amount much higher. And for that fee you would expect someone with world class potential like Bailly.

Also forget him as fullback, he doesn't have enough technique.

Yeah, having 1 more good option is never really a problem, I just hope we get another LB/Winger/CDM/CM as well.

If we can get Grimaldo/Martins or Bailey/Nainggolan (or similar B2B) / and a CDM like Weigl etc, we will be absolutely sorted.

I really doubt the club would spend that much on a CB unless Jose saw some real potential there. We won't be paying a world class potential fee just to help Mendes. It has to be mutually beneficial for that sort of fee.

Smalling is in trouble imo.
Three weeks ago Rojo and Jones were. About a week before that Mkhitaryan was on the verge of being sold binned back to Germany. Lets just relax and see what happens.

Could this be announced before January or will we have to wait? I'm guessing the latter.

Couldn't agree more. Don't understand people that see him as an RB, he has no where good enough technique.

We quite clearly don't see him as a RB, the Portugese papers who are linking him to us say we are/were interested in Semedo too who is the RB at Benfica.
