What I know for certain is that we're becoming much more efficient in our transfer dealings. Very good to see.

believer that Sancho will turn it around
I believe we're going to see more of Bailly at RB if this transfer goes down as expected. Him playing there in a must win away match at Crystal Palace seemed less like a temporary solution and more like Jose wanting to see how Bailly looked at RB, a position he played at Villareal IIRC. From what little he played there I thought Bailly acquitted himself quite well. Athletically he's fine on the wing and physically we know Bailly has no issue there.

Adding Lindelof would give us 5 CBs total with him, Smalling, Bailly, Jones and Rojo with Blind able to step in when required. We also then have 2 of them capable of stepping in at RB with Lindelof and Bailly. Rojo can play at LB.

This doesn't even include Blind as a jack of all trades capable of playing at CB, LB and CDM.

For all those saying he can play as a DM or a RB, i am also a bit skeptical. (He have never played as a DM and only good as a RB in U-21 Euros). Lindelöf is fast and has great ball control for being a central defender, but is really nothing special if you see him as a DM or a RB. He may be able to become one, but isnt even near the quality that real DM and RBs have who is also finished players, unlike Lindelöf.
Well. Have you seen him play RB more than in U-21 Euros? I´ve watched him, almost every game, play RB for ~3 years. Of course it wasn't on the same level as now, but I'm pretty confident he would be great as RB, depending on the system obv.

I have a feeling Mourinho will start to shape our defence something similar to;

New LB
Lindelof
Jones
Bailly
Mourinho was very clear in wanting Bailly to be a CB.

Never heard of him but that seems an awful lot of money for someone so inexperienced.

I trust Jose though, he's brought in 4 players so far and everyone of them has looked good. Bailly especially looks an absolute bargain now.

Looks like we're interested in a different RB so Lindelof would be a CB.
I don't really buy that. Going by sportswitness it would seem they merely added an additional link to lindelof

I have a hunch Smalling might move on. So it will be Rojo, Baily, Jones and Lindelof for our centre back options.
I don't think it's a great idea to sell Smalling. He is a good to excellent CB. The only issue I have is inability to do anything major with possession (or even comfortably pass it at times). But his defending is something I like. I don't think it's fair to sell him because of a few poor games during injury.

Indeed. Bailly has to be our first choice CB and I think Mourinho sees him as a CB and not as a RB in the future.

I saw Lindelof play a couple of times, he seemed decent, but nothing really special. He can play DM, RB and CB and he's a phyiscal presence willing to fight. And after all that's really important, definitely in a Mourinho team. Could prove to be an interesting signing, but it remains hard to call.

It's not that I want us to sell him, but I think Jose seems to have a problem with him and his recent drama during the injury.

He looked pretty limited at right-back for Sweden at the Euros. Didn't seem to have the required technique for the position.

However, I think it's pretty obvious we want him as a centre-back, so it'd also be good to know he could cover for other positions as well.

I think that's Shaw? Did Smalling do something like that too?

Mourinho hinted at both Shaw and Smalling not wanting to play because they didn't feel right. Smalling's camp seemed to leak to the media that he was injured. Mourinho was very annoyed with the media and their 'sources'.
But Smalling was injured and has only just come back from injury now. The entire ordeal was fecking stupid.

Don't know anything about this guy but I generally trust Mourinho when it comes to defenders.

I wouldn't be surprised to see any of Smalling, Rojo or Jones sold.

Is it completely out of the question that we keep all of our CBs?
Not really.

Maybe Mourinho sees Rojo as a long term left back. He did mention after the Fenerbache game, when he and Blind played centre back, that two left backs were playing there.

Mourinho

"Football starts with a goalkeeper and two strong central defenders. We are playing with two left-backs and Blind is having to play central defender on the right side [which hampered him even more].”

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/nov/03/jose-mourinho-manchester-united-fenerbahce

So maybe he wants our four main centre backs to be:

Smalling
Jones
Bailly
Lindelof

To me; however, that's too many centre backs, especially when we could have Rojo/Blind as back up to come in if/when players are injured/rested.

Did he play as a RB in Västerås? And he also did play as a RB in the EUROs when Lustig got injured. Nothing special in my opinion. Not world class material. And obviously being good as a RB in Superettan when you were 16 doesnt mean you will be good enough to play in that position in United when your 22.

Would have no problem with Smalling or Rojo going if that is the case. Jones and Bailly are here to stay, which is excellent. Both our best defenders when fit.

I don't think Bailly was anything special at RB.
He is better than anything we have except for Valencia. Put Smalling there and you see the difference. Same for CB's. I wont talk anymore about Smalling in the Lindelöf thread.

No, the comparision was only to highlight what he offers that Smalling doesnt.
No. You said have we missed Smalling, in which I replied have we missed Bailly.

The answer to both would be no, as we've been fine without both, which means by your thinking, we could get rid of Bailly too.

It's also given us the likes of Carvalho.

I trust Jose when it comes to centre backs, he gets it right most of the time.
You're right. But you've overlooked the fact that Carvalho had 2 to 3 quality seasons as Porto's main man in defence. And this is when they'd won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League on the trot, not to mention the league titles.

Nope. I clearly said that Bailly should start in front of Rojo, because Rojo is an idiot. So yes, we missed Bailly, because Rojo was just lucky to not get sent off.

Did he play in Euro2016? I watched the Sweden games because of Zlatan linked move to us during that period so i didn't really take notice of the rest of the Swedish team

After we signed Gaitan and Garay around about 19 times over the course of 4 years, I won't trust any Portugese reports of us signing a Benfica Player until I see him holding the shirt...

You thinking Bailly should start in front of Rojo is your opinion. However, it's fact that we have not missed Bailly since he's been injured.
