The Academy restructuring thread

People just don't understand how annoying City is. Their scouts were at our matches at every level. Even in some of our away games so we just can't stop them. It's pretty predictable who they will approach as well, basically they were into the ears of every parent on the best players in the U9s-U12s age group or even those U7s-U8s who technically were too young to "sign" for the club and could train/play for everyone. At those age the compensation fee is low and kids only sign one year deal. Not just with us though they regularly poached the best talents of the academies around the area (Liverpool,Blackburn,...). Anyone really think we wanted to boycott playing against them just because we lost some matches? We were fecking terrible in the Marveld Cup in the last few years and we never missed a year.

I have no insider info on this (well I'm not that "obsessed" about City's academy, just our of pure curiosity) but looking at their "team" in those U14s-U16s level it seems that they're trying to build a "team" already at that level with a quite balanced "XI" (I saw a teamsheet of them in the U15s cup and it's a very good side but what strikes me is they have almost nobody playing out of position at all). You can see their U18s first year intake this year. They have 1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 2-3 midfielders, 3-4 AM/wingers and 1-2 strikers. What does it look to you? Not a criticism but it's a huge difference in their approach compared to us and no wonder they won a lot of tournaments at those lower age groups, I mean it's not a rocket science looking at those facts.
So you think they're targeting specific players or have stopped their aggressive recruitment?

I think they're targeting to build a "team" for every year group. They wanted to play only U17s (first year scholars) in the U18s league initially this season and I think that will be their approach in the near future (build a very strong team at U14s-U16s level then move up most of that team to U18s level in their first year and to the U23s in their second year which allow them to send the lads out on loan earlier). There will be some exceptions obviously but I think that's their blueprint.

Even this hasn't happened, theyve consistently played 2nd year scholars this season for the u18s, yet that escapes people. I understand what you're saying, but if that's the case, there's no reason for them to sign Moulden and the Leicester keeper, when they already have Anderson, all for similar/same age groups. Just looks like they're stockpiling.

Moulden is U15s.Anderson is U16s.Of course they will play 2nd year scholars but look like that group will move up and down between U18s,U19s and U23s. Sort of a "transition" year. Only couple of them like Hardy played almost exclusively for the U18s.

We'll see how that works out, but I don't see the likes of Poveda moving up next year, when he's already struggling to start this season. Will just mean a backlog of players not getting games if they moved up the majority of the u17's next season, because it's highly unlikely they will get that many of the existing u23's out on loan or sold. Them signing Zinchenko made me think they're switching to a Chelsea like strategy of hoarding young talented potential first teamers, which in turn has problems for the academy.

Here's a list of some of the scouts we've appointed recently, were they previously worked and where they will be scouting:
Thomas Bormann - Hoffenheim - Switzerland
Jorge Alvial - Chelsea
Roy Beukenkamp - PSV - Holland
Sandro Orlandelli - Brazillian FA - Brasil
Joao Ferreira - Sporting and Orlando - Portugal
Armand Benneker - Austria
Tommy Moller Nielsen - Denmark
Mark Prizant also. Scouts the US for the club, came from Philadelphia Union.

Add Luis Campos, who's supposedly working for us in a freelance capacity. Was the sporting director of Monaco, he found Martial for them and other talents. Don't know what region he's scouting, but probably looking at young players with potential.

Seems to be a lot of movement with regards to the academy and youth development.

  • Manchester United appoint 50 new scouts in double-quick time as Premier League giants scour the globe for the next generation of young talent.
  • It is understood first-team and academy recruitment now comes under the same umbrella. United previously had operated with a tight team reporting into management, particularly under Sir Alex Ferguson.
  • Bout has risen to head of global scouting at Old Trafford - reported by Dutch newspaper AD - and will now work alongside chief scout Jim Lawlor.
  • Armand Benneker, a Belgian former Dundee United central defender who had been working as a scout for St Gallen in Switzerland, is the latest arrival.

Roy Beukenkamp, Henny de Regt and Tommy Moller Nielsen are all working in Europe. The latter is stationed in Scandinavia, a region Premier League sides are targeting strongly. United’s global band of scouts will fly into Carrington twice a year for briefings as the club continues to monitor its recruitment strategy.

As far as Giggs is concerned...yes he trained with city from time to time when he was 14 but Academies didn't exist back then so saying we aggressively poached him is totally untrue. Lot's of lads during those times trained with loads of different clubs and it was very, very informal. At 15 you could sign schoolboy forms and Giggs chose United as he no allegiance to any club...
You are right about Giggs - as I recall from his book - he trained with City once - but he also wrote that City weren't even his second choice. Basically he said that there was no chance of him joining City - it wasn't even close.

Wow! We're really getting aggressive with improving our scouting network.. Academy is in good shape now, should only get better with time if we keep this investment up

Luis Campos who's said to be working for us, is supposedly in advanced talks with Marseille to be their Sporting Director. He's said to be keen on the position.

Quick question - does anybody know if these scouts are limited to academy players or will they also scout for the first team? I'd imagine it's both, surely?

Wrong fact again. McAtee joined City at 11 not 14 so not sure where's that "Giggs moment" came from.

From what I've heard David Harrison will join United as head of academy recruitment with Lyndon Tomlinson as assistant. Both formerly at City and we're bringing in a 3rd City academy scout Ronnie Cusick as well

Any updates on the search for a full time u23 manager?
Haven't heard anything but it probably won't be long before Bruno Ribeiro is linked with the job since he's friends with Jose and has left Port Vale
