I've given Konichiwa a few listens and I wasn't impressed. It sounds like a sub-par generic American rap album. Nothing like the sharp-edged sound I've heard in the rest of this thread. Colour me disappointed.

It's a 6/10 album... a disappointing 6. As you said in your second post, it's not grime. There's some grime on it, but it's a rap album that's meant to bridge the gap between the US and Britain. The best tracks on the album were released in 2014 and 2015. The truth is, Skepta's been trying to make it into the mainstream for years, but his main problem is that his pop tunes have been terrible and that has contributed to the lack of success and longevity in the mainstream. It's different now because That's Not Me and Shutdown are bangers (not even going to bother linking the garbage pop tunes he released years ago), and he has the backing of Drake so yeah... Also, Skepta was going to release Konnichiwa in 2014, but then That's Not Me blew up and that changed everything. Originally, this was meant to be on the album, and you can tell he was trying to work his way back into the mainstream. Fortunately he changed the album and although Konnichiwa is average, he made the right decision.
Also, grime and UK hip-hop suffer massively from the lack of classics, or very good, albums. If you want to hear some "proper" grime, listen to Ghetts - Freedom of Speech or Devlin - Art of Rolling. If you want to hear some quality UK hip-hop, listen to Mic Righteous - Yob Culture. The problem over here is that artists don't understand the concept of a cohesive project. All we know is singles or mixtapes with songs being thrown about (Chip has been notorious for this lately).

I personally think it's great and it's highly rated by other grime fans.
Very limited lyrically, but can't deny that he produces banger after banger. I might get bored of him soon though. I prefer these to some of the bangers he's released in the past year:

Another dead Stormzy track for me, but can understand why it's appealing to some. I really don't like Stormzy. I remember in 2014 when I first heard of him because of his Behind Barz. I thought there was potential there. He released Not That Deep, which is easily his best track, but he's moved away from that sound. Which is what artists do obviously, but how many great tracks has he produced since? He's a dead artist and it annoys me that he's got this much success since 2014. Dead flow + dead bars = dead track. Rinse and repeat. Maybe this stuff about him being an industry plant is true. Anyway, I'll give him one more chance when his album is released.

Best thing Stormzy ever did was 0 to 100. He's lost it, plus the hype in this music scene moves so quick nowadays and people are over him. I haven't even bothered listening to Kano or Wiley's most recent albums. Heard they are both decent though.

I've been brought up on a diet of American hip hop where using the same word to rhyme with itself is a bit of a no-no. I mean, if you can't be creative with your lyricism, what's the point?I actually love it but then <--- tagline

It's a different kind of creative to me and that sort of flow and lyrics has an energy that I don't think you get from anything else. Don't get me wrong I love American rap, especially the lyricism of east coast rappers.
Unless I'm getting my music history wrong, Grime has it's roots in Jungle/Drum & Bass/Garage MCing. The link with Hip Hop(Both US/UK) and Grime is pretty weak.

If you're talking lyricism - then what grime typically uses is a mixture of the internal 2,4 rhyming structure and the a-b-a-b, or the a-b-b-a-c-d-d-c flow.
It happens quite frequently in rap but its execution is usually poor. Mostly rappers will use a word like n*gga or shit at the end of the line, and rhyme internally within it, occasionally the repeated word/few words will start at the beginning of the line but repeat the same pattern.
Those who do master this rhyming technique are actually usually the ones who are better at lyricism - Eminem, Big Pun, Kendrick, Big L, Rakim etc.
It's certainly not shit in any way.
I'd argue that Grime artists as a whole master this technique better than American rap artists considering the infrequency in quality that happens in American rap specifically with these rhyming schemes only.

I've got time for Maxsta after his £5 pound munch. Also he kills that Hate it or Love it remix so big up Max. Must be weird for guys like him though. They've all got talent etc but they are slightly irrelevant nowadays and must know it. UK rap is basically run by these drill gangs at the moment but its probably just a fad and will pass eventually anyway.
