^ yeah you're right, Romero is the better keeper.

To feck with stats.

Play the best team we have, and that includes DDG. Romero has been decent, but this isn't a time to be playing someone for the sake of being nice.
I think Jose will stand by what he said though.

Would be absolutely ridiculous to play Romero, he has an error in him and you can't afford that at this stage

Biggest games require the best players. De Gea in.

Romero is a solid #2, and I'd rate him as the best #2 in the league, but he's no De Gea. He's looked good in games where he's had little to do, and his concentration in those games has been tremendous. He was a bit busier against Anderlecht and his shakiness did start to creep in. He made a few fumbles, though they didn't end up being costly. If we are going all-in for the Europa League, then it needs to be best players and strongest lineups in the next 3 games.

Based on what? Apart from the Swansea game last year I can't really remember him making an error but I can remember lots of really good saves. Add to the fact the bloke is Argentina's No.1 and we are hardly talking about a run-of-the-mill back up goalkeeper
Last night too, every time he plays in fact. We were lucky the guy was slow off the mark when he spilt it in front of him. Routine save he knocked with his knee, we were lucky it wasn't on better target because as far as Romero knew it was past him. He scares the life out of me.

I never understand how Jose played Romero ahead of De Gea today. Don't get me wrong, Romero has done a very good job but I thought not conceded in today's game could become very crucial. Playing our best keeper especially a world class keeper would have been more safe. Definitely should start in semi.

Part of me wants to let Romero carry on. He has done a good job and would seem harsh to replace him as things start getting serious but we really need to win it and De Gea is by far the better keeper.

Romero needs to play because we need to alternate and rest as much as our first team as we can. And the way De Gea's been flirting with Real because he's controlled by a chick five years older than him is pathetic.

I'd give to Romero but it would be a fair call to play the best goalkeeper we have. It would probably be De Gea in the final.

Romero also took a back seat for the League Cup Final, so I'm not sure how he would take sitting out of another semi-final/final after he's played well. If De Gea was certainly going to be here next season, it wouldn't matter so much but we don't know yet what our keeper situation will be in the summer. So it's really not a good time to piss anyone off.

I do know one thing, when extra time started I wished we had a sub open to bring in De Gea because Romero, in the one or two times I've watched, looks hopeless on penalties. I would absolutely take him out in that situation.

De Gea when he's fit should be on the pitch. Romero's great though

Given its our best chance of getting into the Champions League I don't think there's space for sentimentality. We have to play our best team and DDG is by far the better keeper.

Give Romero a few PL games to make up for it.

I'd play Romero all the way even in the final. He's done absolutely nothing wrong and deserves to keep his place in the Europe games.

De gea has been relatively poor this season by his standards

Time for our attacking players to simply convert their chances and we'll be fine even if it's Joel Pereira in goal.

De Gea is an elite talent but it's Romero who currently holds way bigger tournament experience.

Not for me. Romero has been superb in this competition. Mourinho clearly decided Romero would be the keeper for the Europa League and I dont see why that would change just because we have got further. He is one of the reasons why we have progressed so far.

Plus we dont want to p*ss him off. Could well be that next season he is here and the other one not

I'd rather have DDG play in the EL. It's a title plus CL. But if Jose is comfortable using Romero, I wouldn't have an issue.

But De Gea made mistakes in consecutive matches. If we were in the final against a very tough opponent then I can see this being a discussion, but it's pretty harsh to drop him for the semis when the goal we conceded wasn't even his fault.

I'd stick with Romero. he does a good job. If we don't qualify, it won't be because of our keeper.

Leaving aside the question of whether it's fair or not, since when has the consensus become that DDG hasn't been good this season this season? VDS had plenty of these seasons where he wasn't making save after save and he was considered world class.
One of the staggering Caf narratives that will never make any sense no matter who hard you try to understand it. De Gea could have done better for Jagielka's goal the other week and it's genuinely altered the mindset of swathes of fans. So much so that in the PFA thread there was bizarre surprise that his peers - yet again - quite rightly decided he was still (duh) the best goalkeeper in the country. Jordan fecking Pickford, or someone...

Anyway, on planet earth, I'd prefer it if we play De Gea for the rest of the tournament. He's by far the better goalkeeper and a great deal more reliable than Romero. I like Romero, mind you, but hey ho. Football isn't always fair.

I don't see a reason why we should not continue trusting Romero in that competition. It's not like he's played badly and it would be a slap across the face if we replace him now.

First of all I think if you make the decision that Romero plays EL, you can not just take that away from him when things start to become interesting. It shows a complete lack of trust to your player and I don't think he will want to remain at a club that has a complete lack of trust in him.

Secondly, Imagine dropping Romero for Dave and then Dave playing a really bad game and costing us the EL. Where do you go from there ?

Unless Jose feels that Romero is a liability at the back and will cost us points, I don't think he should just replace him with DDG because the stakes are higher for the club. Not unless a situation like this has been anticipated and discussed with Romero well beforehand.
De Gea has already played in the Europa League though. He hasn't played every game as it is so no decision was made that Romero plays Europa League games. He just happens to have been selected at times.

We are a nats bollock away from the final. It would be stupid to not play (arguably) the best goalkeeper in the world for the remainder of our EL campaign.

Here's a question for all of you that are saying that we should stick with Romero due to some perverse loyalty, if the semi final goes to penalties, who would you rather have between the sticks?

I know who I'd choose every fecking time.

I feel like a lot of people ignore De Gea's kicking ability and ability to play with the ball at his feet exceptionally well.

The sensible option is to play De Gea from now on. Romero has did great and dropping him would be harsh, but no place for sentiment. We want to win the competition and De Gea is a far better keeper.

It wouldn't be fair to Romero to start DDG now but so be it, such is life. DDG is our best option and as long as he's healthy, he should be starting our biggest matches. The EL almost certainly now represents our best chance to get CL next year, this shouldn't be a debate IMO.
