Belgian newspapers reporting that Monaco are willing to pay 15 million € for Sander Berge, Norwegian player of Genk.

As you know, Genk has been selling quality players for years now: Ndidi, De Bruyne, Courtois, Benteke, Koulibaly, Milinkovic-Savic.

This Berge guy is the next big thing. Only 19 years old, big guy, excellent technique and vista. Also member of the Norwegian NT.

I wouldn't mind Utd making a bid for him.

Think Mourinho will be looking for ready made players.

6'3'' apparently. that's quite big for a teenager.

But,I would be hard pressed to call him a prodigy as he plays in Genk. Only de Bruyne and Coutois are quality and they made their names for Wolfsburg and Atleti

Except for the fact both Courtois and De Bruyne were bought by Chelsea, directly from Genk? They were huge prospects when still playing for Genk. Both of them made them champions.

Not saying Berge is going to have the same career, but there is somehing about him when you see him play. And apparently that's already attracting top clubs.

I don't really understand this comment. They were the exact same as this Berge lad. Played for Genk, had huge potential, before moving on and becoming very good players.

Not saying he cannot become a top player. But it is a bit premature to term a guy as the next big thing who has played a total of 9 games for Genk.

He really reminds me of Carrick in the few things I have seen on him. Have we got the time to nurture at the moment though? I feel like we will be signing established players for the foreseeable future whilst under Mourinho.

He's 19? People at 19 usually don't grow taller anymore.. so big "for a teenager" doesn't really apply at 19?

Thats tripe I am afraid, a lot of people will stop growing arou d 21/22.
(I'm sorry to go offtopic here)
Good source for this? Cause all I can find is that is more the exception and generally not significant.

Odds on Monaco signing him for £15 mill and us lot buying him in 4 years for £70mill.

I wish we would make signings like this and instead of giving game time to the likes of Rooney, young, carrick who are clearly past it we should stick promising youngsters on the bench and give them game time. Doubt it will ever happen tho

He's very good. Been excellent at replacing Ndidi for Genk.

I think it's best to stay away from Norwegian players at the moment. So many prospects, but they never turn into anything at all. Ødegaard is still young and who knows about him, but I feel he has not taken the two steps forward that he should have been to justify the hype. Møller Dæhli was the next big thing, but where is he now? So many over-hyped talents that are too rich too soon and end up in a comfortable state at 19 or 20. Just like Nordtveit, I think Berge is going to end up bang average and might get a few games in the Premier League for Swansea or Burnley.

We just don't produce the players anymore and the state of the national league and national team is at an all-time low, especially now that we are trying to get "technical" ability in the team instead of defensive force like the 90's. Give me a Henning Berg, Ronny Johnsen or Rune Bratseth every day over these average technical midfielders that are never going to cut it against midfielders growing up in much tougher conditions, both in economical and footballing terms.

Stay away, get someone from Germany, England or Spain instead.

Looks like a FM regen wonderkid. If Genk and now Monaco, two teams with excellent scouting network are in for him in the past few months I would take the gamble. Atleast send him on a European loan for a year or two like Chelsea and bring him back with enough experience.

I would not mind United signing these kind of youngsters up and sending them out on loan to see how they develop.

They won't all turn out to be the next big thing but obviously some of them will turn into good players that can either make it at the club or be sold for a good profit.

We are sitting on a bunch of money, paying outright silly money for some players, usually the same players we could have signed for alot less if we got them a bit earlier. There is no reason for us not to a sign a good talent if the price is low. You often see the reasoning, he is not good enough to make it in the first team yet and he is too good for the u21, so we should steer clear for now and wait how he develops at clubs like Monaco or Dortmund or something and if he becomes the next big thing, sign him up for a crazy amount then. It is stupid to do business this way.

I mean we all now want Mbappe because he has been so good at Monaco, we will have to fork out near a 100m if we want to sign him. Imagine if we had snatched up Mbappe a year ago and send him loan and saw him develop like this, it would be crazy exciting. United has money enough to take a punt on a few youngsters every year, not to have them in the first team directly but to send them out on loan.

In that perspective I would be all for taking up someone like Sander Berge. And we should sign Dendoncker aswell whilst we are at it.

Difference between Sander Berge and Ødegaard/Dæhli is that Berge is not a Hobbit. And this has been the main problem with norwegian "talents". Either they are hobbits with great technique, or they are strong/fast with horrible technique.

Dæhli was hyped far above his skill level, simply because of his technique, but he could not dribble past a player because lack of pace, could not pass further than 5 meters because of his weak hobbit legs, the same goes for shooting and crossing.

And Berge seems to have a much more balanced set of abilities.
Ødegaard still needs to improve his physique! A lot. He should go on a "free transfer" to Juventus. That usually helps with that.

Don't normally comment on threads where the player hasn't been linked to United at all but had to for this.

.
Havent stopped laughing at weak hobbit legs as a description :lol:

Sander Berge would excite me more than Fabinho, actually.
He's far too green. At his age he needs consistent development which he will get at Genk and then an intermediate move elsewhere before a big club should be going for him. He's extremely talented, no doubt, but no big club is starting 19 year olds as their deepest midfielder.
