Very overpriced, but should be a good player for Everton if he maintains his form from this year.

I think it's absolutely crazy for a keeper for a club who got relegated going for 30 million. 10 years ago you would get players for a cut price If they were relegated and Pickford, albeit is a decent keeper but is nothing special and never will be.

And before people saying he's worth it in today's market, he's simply not. Yes he's English and that will always add more money to any deal but Pickford was linked with a 15 million move which was fair but since every Tom, Dick and Harry have money nowadays his price skyrocketed to 30 million. Surely Everton can get a better keeper for less of what they paid for Pickford?

You have to wonder with all the news in the last few days saying Sky Sports viewers and subscriptions have fallen significantly that how longer more can this last? The Premier League brand is simply in sharp decline and the next TV deal may prove even bigger then the next but there's even the potential that it will be cut back dramatically which would mean clubs like Burnley and Stoke will have players on big wages and simply won't have the money to pay which will leave huge repercussions on teams in the league. The TV deal is the only thing keeping half these clubs going at this point in time which in turn is allowing them to spend unlimited money on players

The likes of Liverpool, United, Chelsea will always have the financial muscle to cope If the Premier League deals starts failing through but you have to wonder what are the long-term affects for teams in the country will be.

It's amazing how theres some taboo about Keepers transfer fees. No-one bats an eye lid at a £30 million striker, yet pay that for a keeper and people lose their minds.

Not sure why people don't believe Pickford is any good. He reminds me a lot of De Gea when we bought him, and look how that turned out. People are always wanting to buy the exotic superstars nowadays, rather than getting the talent in early and training them to being world class. Imagine Pickford with the mentoring De Gea had - and he's already strong in the league.

By the time DDG was Pickford's age, he was one of the best around with about 5 seasons of top level football under his belt. Absolutely no comparisons.

How much of Pickford have you actually watched? Personally I think it's ludicrous to suggest with certainty he will never be anything special. He has looked very good for Sunderland but it's a totally different game playing for a poor side and getting tons of shots compared to a top side. It's very hard to say how he will look, hence why i think bold predictions should be reserved until he has actually had a chance to impress at Everton. I think he has shown enough to suggest he has what it takes to be a top class keeper.

why do posters on this forum insist on dwelling on the past. Sunderland got more prize money for finishing last than Juventus got for winning their league. You think a measly 10 million pounds will force Sunderland into selling their highly rated young English GK? They got a bucket load of money and he is their most valuable player. When everyone has money prices go up. It's really not that complicated.

I think it's a good deal. He is what? In his early 20s? If he gives them even 5 years of top performance it will be a bargain.

I have watched plenty of Pickford and like I said he's a decent keeper but is he any better then Begovic who's just joined Bournemouth for 10 million? I don't think so, I think he's been massively over hyped because his's English and was the only decent point (along with Defoe) of a poor campaign for Sunderland....literally they were scraping the barrel with trying to get positives and saw Pickford as one.

And that's what's wrong with English football and why it's in a sharp decline. I know it's not Sunderland's fault, they are delighted to be making the money and so they should but the quality of football in England has gone so far backwards. They then decide, with the money they have they can throw money at average players and give them 50-80k a week and can barely kick a football. They bought Djilobodji from Chelsea for 8 million and gave him a big contract in the process.....I have seen better players from local school teams then him but sure it's alright they have the money to burn

This is just nonsense.

It's happening right now, online streaming has become the way forward for most people who can't afford or couldn't care less of watching Burnley v Brighton on Monday Night football. It's eventually going to hit it's peak and the likes of SkySports or BT won't be able to pump as much money in the Premier League TV packages anymore

You said it's in sharp decline which it isn't and you said the next TV deal might be dramatically lower which again is wrong. It might be a bit smaller, which has happened before by the way, but it's not dramatically smaller.

If we have another average Premier League season like the last one you don't think the viewers will not continue to get lower and lower? You have to also remember at the start of the season the league got some of the best managers in the world together in Conte, Pep, Klopp, Mourinho etc and still it dropped by 14%. Imagine If it drops by another 14% next season, do you honestly think Sky or BT will afford to pump another billion pound deal into the packages?

Like I said, the Premier League brand isn't as strong as it was 5-6 years ago. We haven't had a good Champions League team since Chelsea won it in 2012 and they were by far the best Premier League in the league that season when they finished 6th. Also it looks like the likes of Italy are gaining more interest now and are looking like they will get back to the glory days of the 90's while Spain are still streaks ahead in terms of quality when you look at Madrid and Barcelona and to some extinct, Atletico

And yes I remember City getting to the semi-finals two years ago but they were beyond dreadful in that semi-final against Madrid

"Young" for a goalie can still be late 20's. So think the direct comparison at the age of 23 with DDG is a bit unfair.

If they are paying so much for goal keeper then they will make Chelsea to pay 100 million for Lukaku.

The laws of Economics has nothing to do with english football "decline" as a matter of fact i think England has looked much better than in recent years. Im on the outside looking in i have no bias. Its getting better. Clubs having more money these days doesnt change anything.

The only advantage that English teams have when all the money was dumped in with the new EPL TV money was they would be able to get compete better with european teams. If they are buying inside of england where everyone is rich the dollars will go up as no team has much of a money advnatage over the other.

Tbf this fee isn't that ridiculous if you compare to Ederson. Both young players and haven't played for their national teams. IIRC Pickford played in all the youth levels and has PL experience, home grown player.

Even from experience point of view they are around same level.

Neuer €30m
De Gea €25m
Leno ~€20m (release clause)
Oblak €16m
Cech €14m
Lloris €13m
MAtS €12m
Trapp €10m
Navas €10m
Bürki €3.5m

Pickford €34m..

I can't imagine any reason why this would be reasonable transfer.

City with their CL winning ambition, Pep's very specific demands and their Oil money can't be Everton's benchmark.

It is a high fee but the market has quite clearly changed massively in the past couple of years. De Gea and Neuer would have £70 - 80m tags on their heads now.

I am jealous Everton are getting him. He's my next choice after De Gea, but unlikely we'll ever sign him now. We should have gone for him and loaned him out for a season or two.

Some of those transfers are outdated - sure. But some are only one or two years old.
And it would be one thing if one of the big clubs made such a transfer, but a club such as Everton has to look for a future resale profit in these kind of deals and very few world class keepers aside €34m is already the end of the line for keepers.

I see he's ridiculously overrated on here too. Seriously, I just don't see it with him. He's your typical keeper at a lower club who looks ok at times due to his side being utterly shite and conceding chances all over the place.

Transfer fee is only one part, how you pay the fee is just as important. I'd imagine clubs with high revenues (basically every single PL club) prefers to pay a higher fee if it means they can pay for a longer period.

When they signed Lukaku for £28m a lot of people thought it was crazy but here they are going to moving him on for more than double that. Pickford is a bigger gamble though. He has some world class performances last year and is pretty good with his feet but he also made a number of blunders.

Strikers and GKs are appels and oranges. It's way easier to get a good GK and they cost a fraction.

Don't have a problem with the price. Prices for players now don't mean jack shit.

He's clearly a massive talent and he was the reason Sunderland weren't even more massively embarrassing last year.

My point is that they will be looking to sell him on for £50m+ in three or four years time.
For that to happen he'd have to become one of the best GKs in the world and the record for GKs would have to increase. Doesn't sound like a sensible investment strategy to me.
That kind of money buys you a top class attacking talent which offers twice the possible windfall down the line.

Not so sure about that, for example (I know it was way back in 1999) but after Schmeichal we had Bosnich, Barthez, Howard, Carroll, Carroll, Taibi etc and it took years to get a decent keeper in VDS. Not many on here rate Hart, yet he's played 70 odd games for England and won titles with City.

We went through a fair bit of pain with DDG at the start of his career and took somewhat of a gamble on a very green 20 year old. Its really not that easy to get a top quality keeper. Judging by the outlay from City and Everton, the cost of keepers are catching up with that of outfield players. Goodness knows what DDG and Neuer would be worth.

PL clubs don't need money from transfers because of TV deals. They sign players to retain and grow.

The fee is actually crazy when you actually consider previous goalkeeper transfer fees.

Clearly, this means De Gea is worth three times that amount.

I think he's seriously talented but at present I feel 30m is overpriced, Duffer has it about right at 15m given the current mark. He's got the usual English youngster tax on his head which is a pile of backdoor brown stuff.

If Lukaku and Barkley are off this summer, Everton will be awash with cash. Better to get some early business out of the way beforehand,
