I've been a United fan since I was 5 (52 now) and have never fallen out of love with them. They may be struggling but it is part and parcel of supporting a team. The bad times make the good times even better.
I have been wanking since I was 13, and it may not be quite as good as it used to be, but I still love it.
Daymn! 39 years of service.... I hope someone gets you a gold watch.:D

I usually am not bothered arguing against top red attitudes.

The fact that Woodward has fired two managers for those sort of results shows that he doesn't think they were meeting United qualities too or that he too simply started following United after 92.

United have always strived to be the best. Even during the times when they were not. It's why a lot of United managers lost their jobs between the 70s and the 80s. It didn't suddenly become acceptable to be poor.

Get used to the fact, that even peope who are 32 today may not remember pre-Ferguson's success era and it's not the reason why they (and their attitude) should be laughed at. It's normal, but there are so many posters here writing "man, you don't know life if you didn't see that poor run of United in 1973 when we couldn't score and lost three games in a row, nowadays, fans wouldn't imagine that".

There are many fans who were born when Ferguson was our manager and it's not their fault, ffs.

By the way, I remember the period (2004, 2005, 2006) when we were also shite, compared to the standards, and it wasn't like that. We had the spine, we had Ferguson, you could see a lot of talent. It's simply different and if you don't see it and want to go the easy way and call me a golry hunter from abroad, okay, but it's not right.

It's funny how people react to the word "love" in football, they always want to prove that they're better fans, so they love the club more...

05/06 Season was a good one. CL semi, two of the best kits we've ever had. Ronaldo starting to become world class joing Rooney.

05/06 was a good year. It was only the previous season we got knocked out of the group stages in CL though.

I'm so disgusted and feel so sick just reading the title of this thread. "How to fall in love with the club again?" FFS, get a grip, seriously. Do you think this is some kind of Romeo and Juliet love story? It's actually very embarrassing what opposition fans said about Man Utd fans being glory-hunters as we tend to get stereotyped with this stick. OP, you are the epitome of it right now. How shameful for me to be associated with such emasculated beings. Please don't tell people you are a Man Utd fan. Say you are a City fan or something. Or even better, go switch your loyalty to a club like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus where you're guaranteed to be deeply in love with the clubs. The fact that you need validation on a Man Utd forum to ask for suggestions on how to regain your love for a club you support? I can't even...and you went on to mention that if we start winning league titles again, it would help. There's a reason why ABU exists and you are the primary cause of it.

No, but it's no excuse for sounding like a spoilt glory hunter either. Which is what 'people like you' sound like. It's not your age, it's your attitude.

God, I just hate that you know how old I am and where I am from.

We can't discuss, but you're only teaching me that it used to be different and worse (before Ferguson) and I'm a glory hunter. Pfff.
you are. You loved the team when it was winning and now that it isn't you find yourself wondering why you don't love it anymore.

It's pretty cut and dried.

@Maciek would it be fair to say you love the club but don't have the same affection for the players?

I can relate to that, it's not the lack of winning it's the lack of passion for me.
Yesterday the Real semi came on a random YouTube search, the one where Nani is harshly sent off.
Even down to 10 men we took the game to Madrid, the players put everything on the line for the club. I don't see that as much, there hasn't been the fight.

I've supported United for nearly 30 years, and had many idols through that period, Schmiechal being my first, then Scholes, then Ronaldo and Scholes and also Evra. I can't say there is a player in our team that I would be gutted if we sold.

Edit. Been pondering, I'd be sad if rash left, he looks like he loves the club

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Wow, many different perspectives here in this thread.

Interesting..

Neat.
Never fell out of love with the club, never will.

Having SAF was special though because then you had the duality of a godlike mastodont of a man and the club you love, things will never feel the same like that, but the love for the club remains.

It felt like watching an army led by some unbeatable general or something when we had SAF tearing shit up on the sidelines.
 Yup, SAF is that good, phantasy-like even, England Football General King.

Winning with army of superstars? No prob. Some of them will be shipped off.

Winning with army of averagees? Easy. They'll play out of their limitations, like on steroid.

The younger later generation who have not seen him managing live may high likely not appreciate him the same way we do.

Since my mum is French and I was only getting into football around 1992, I jumped on the united juggernaut shortly after Cantona signed, and was instantly spoiled with over a decade of unmitigated success.

Then came a mini drought from 2003-2006. This was, in my eyes, the first real test of my support as we first had to watch Arsenal and then Chelsea (twice) get their grubby mitts on "our" trophy.

What this period did for me though, was to cement my love for the club. I yearned for us to come back to the top so hard, that when we did, it was my favourite season ever in 06/07. We were a young team and it was clear early on that with Rooney Ronaldo and co. we could kick on and do great things.

Essentially for me, in response to the OP, is that absence truly does make the heart grow fonder, and I find myself more manically interested in United these days, than I have at any time in the last decade when we were winning left right and centre in Fergie's last hurrah.
Same, that season is so good, excitement/ecstacy off the roof, SAF back to his best, Rooney maturing, Ronaldo finally blooms, Scholes returning, etc, so good, still remember it to this day, never forget.

Especially for young fans who have not seen SAF's magicks in the 1990s, season 2006-7 is perhaps the first they saw and witness live (I was too young back then in the 1990s, Seas. 2006-7 is the first time, me older enough, to witness the "real" Manchester United like the many previous legendary United teams in its amazing history).

Excelsior.

Look at it this way. Manchester United is not the devil. Top four/six this season will be a Darwinian warzone and -Chelsea, City etc: there are no innocents. If you don't drop watching football altogether, you may as well keep your lot in with MUFC.

OP is a soft target here but let's be honest, it isn't easy to be seeing our club like this if we started watching football in the 90's or 2000's. Even if this will label some as spoiled or glory hunters, it's understandable for a few reasons.

The Ferguson era was a golden one for this club and one that many clubs may never ever replicate. A manager at the helm for 2 decades who has built several of his teams from scratch, along with homegrown players such as Giggs, Scholes and Neville that were icons for the club. Sprinkle this with some of the worlds hottest and exciting talents with Rooney and Ronaldo. We were an incredible club and truly different from the others around.

The short answer for how that identity will come back is winning. We start winning trophies, start asserting our dominance and we can develop a new Man United identity.

All that said, can never lose love for the club. The day I am not disappointed when we lose is when I'll know I have lost love for the club

Really enjoyed this thread.
Can see why some have raised negative thoughts about the theme but it's raised some important and interesting comments.
I have found particular resonance with the comments about our age and change in responsibility. Absolutely it's harder to be AS passionate as yesteryear but not because we're not as good. There's just other things to worry about lol The same could be said about lots of things like music and so on. Not just Utd.
Anyhoo. What I have noticed down the thread (and I maybe wrong), but it's not that any of us have any less love for United. I think it's less of a love of football as a whole. Or certainly a struggle to adjust from what it was to where we are maybe with the TV money etc

We have been used to eras with clubs having managers and players for years and years. Something that fans can associate with and attach to which generates the passion. The whole of football has seen seismic shift in the last 10 years. We're now in the world of 3 year managers (and less in many cases), players coming and going much quicker. Are we going to see anymore 20 year manager tenures or players staying at 1 club their whole career? I doubt it.
All these things we see them everyday now so we are used to it happening but they're not traits of the sport we originally knew and fell in love with. It's still there but it's evolved and maybe some of the passion evolved too.

For me it's natural to yearn for yesteryear. Even if it's through rose tinted spectacles lol
Loving United will always be there, whether it's bubbling away in the background, or right at the front in times like Keane v Viera. But times change as do priorities....... one things for sure, like a good friend..... it's always with you

Fell in love with the club 54 years ago, had the fantastic 60s the depressing relegation of the 70s, the hope of the 80s and the brilliance of the Fergie era.
How do you fall out of love with United?
A few years without the title, so what, even in that time we've won the LC, FAC and the EL.
Look forward to every season and love watching United. Magical even in the worst of times.

You need some time off. Try a few "others" for a while. Summer is a good time for that. You will eventually come back, when you get bored of more sultry pastures.

My father always told me to try a lot and not end up with the first one I get but feck that.

I do miss us winning away, playing great stuff with serious heart and the advertising and showboating and money was secondary. It seems like the last few years we are just the champions of wasting money and showing off how rich and well supported we are and not much else. The internet and all the extra money in football is as much to blame I suppose. The gulf between the fans and big clubs and even the average players is bigger than ever too. The players are just selling a lifestyle most of us fans can only dream of and their personal celebrity is bigger than ever. Most of these guys aren't particularly smart or interesting or even that successful (in footballing terms)at the end of the day. they are given all of this while achieving very little on the pitch and in all probability caring very little about whichever club they are playing for. That can be frustrating. The old guard would come back ready to win year after year with only the really important stories making the news, there so much news now and most of it is nothing. Football is changing a lot and I'm fine with us pushing the market in the way that we are, it's smart. nearly every other club wishes they could do the same. Ill always support United but I want players who love the club to be spine of the team. I want to see a plan put into place for the next few years with some genuinely exciting young players pushing for first team spots instead of having to sign them for 50 million when they've half developed at another club. Having a steady manager or general manager should go some way towards rectifying that.
I'm surprised we are still so well supported after 4 years of serving up mostly shit football and poor results. Where would our club be now if not for our revenue? With the amount of feck-ups in the transfer market we've had, we are lucky to still be able to spend 200m this summer.

When most players are mercenaries who don't put their heart and soul into it and don't care who gives them their massive pay checks, what's really left to care about? I feel football lacks characters these days. It's all so PR-managed. I struggle to think of interesting, intelligent players in our squad. Herrera is bright and cares about the club. Zlatan with his media persona and confidence provided some entertainment, at least. But the rest?

I guess that's how glory hunter supporters feel when the team they follow stop winning. Go and support Chelsea for a few years.

Fergies retirement has had the opppsite effect for me. Before he retired, I wasn't fussed about missing a game because more often than not we would win. Or I wouldn't really care about transfer rumours becasue it didn't matter, we would be there or thereabouts either way.

But since he left I've found myself obsessing over the club, constantly seeking content, coming on here multiple times a day etc. I'm not sure why that is, maybe it's because we had stability with Fergie and we knew he would get it right.
Moyes was a disaster, but I still looked forward to every game hoping that we would find some form. LVG came with the optimism, I like LVG I thought he was doing some of the things we needed but the football was dire and at times he would make some ridiculous choices.

I enjoyed last season. Great to see the optimism come back with Jose and it feels like we have got the right man at the right time. The league form was shite but I really can't complain when we win two trophies and get back into the UCL.

I still feel the buzz for every game, defeats still hurt. But the thing I've found most interesting is how the club is moving on from Fergie, it's fascinating. I think the days of building the club in the image of one man is gone- and rightly so.

I agree with the statement about the lack of passion. I too have supported united for nearly 30 years, and my favourite players down the years have been the likes of Hughes, Cantona, Keane, Gary Neville, Vidic and Rooney. Players that show that they really care about winning.

I will always love united, but I don't feel the same about the players of today as I did about players of the past. Maybe it's because I was younger back then, whereas now I'm older than most of our players. Or maybe it's just how football has evolved.

I loved seeing Keane smash in to a tackle and lift the rest of the players and the whole stadium. And I loved seeing him chasing the ref, screaming at him like he was about to deck him. I know that tough tackling and harassing the ref are being taken out of the game now, but that passion and determination was what made me love those players.

I don't want to see players doing silly handshakes and dabbing. That stuff is pathetic. Imagine Roy Keane and Jaap Stam doing a silly handshake that lasts a minute. It wouldn't happen.

Try to limit yourself out of anything United, maybe even football. And then come back on August 12th or 13th, and see how it is.

Watch different sports, a lot of entertaining ones currently going on. I never cared about tennis or cycling before, but having a lot of fun watching Roland Garros, Wimbledon or Tour de France.

I've been supporting United since 1969 and there has been some really poor teams in that time.

In fact when we were really bad, I remember every goal and every win meant that much more.

Guess what, United was my first love and I still can't say that I have fallen out of love yet.

You're suppose to stick with your club through thick and thin, not just the glory days.

Part of being loyal is to support your club even when it's not going well. I would understand this question if the club was acting morally/ethically wrong but to stop loving the club just for a lack of success, despite people still trying their hardest to change that, is contradicting the concept of fandom.

United is my club. Through thick and thin and there will never be any exception. It's an immanent element of my life. These years after SAF departure weren't exactly biggest fun and caused lots of frustration but at the same time I feel proud and honoured to be - after all these years of unprecedented success - that loyal supporter who is there no matter what and believes in better days.

Staff-wise - may be my naive way of thinking but I like our players. I really do. I think that turning blind eye on their shortcomings and getting rid of that sense of entitlement helps. Yes, I know Jessie is not the best dribbler around but he's our man and we need to support him.

Being a complainer or listening to complainers doesn't help as well. The amount of negativity I see here or r/reddevils is absolutely staggering. Don't feed yourself with this kind of small-time crap as this certainly doesn't help restoring love to the club.

Nah, I've never felt like that. There's been times where football in general has taken a lower priority in my life and I might miss a few results but it's always important to me.

Obviously I despair with United sometimes post-Fergie, but as soon as I step into a proper United pub on match day or up the steps into Old Trafford none of that makes a difference.

Will never fall out of love with the club but you can still come to the realisation that MUFC the company has become a bit of a soulless corporation. Cling to the spirit of the "club" aspect of it I guess.

You show your love by still being here when things get tough. Being there through the hard times shows that the love is real and will never diminish.
