He's 7! Can't get much better value than that for someone starting for the reigning champions.
I am just unsure about Chelsea and their attack this season. Sure, he will be on set pieces also, but will they create/attack enough?

One of many drafts. Thoughts?

*I know Herrera isn't strong, but for a 4th midfielder at 5.5 he's enabling me plenty of funds to play with, might get forward more with Matic joining and has good fixtures. Plus, after the first fixture Gayle has a great run so he probably won't play too often anyway.
*The defence isn't star-filled, but apart from Trippier who I think is a must I went with low budget-low percentage players who I made sure rotate well in fixtures to always have 3-4 defenders with good fixtures.
*I was/still am torn between Willian and Cesc, but feel Cesc might start stronger. With Chelsea's rough start from GW2-GW7 I went against my instinct of getting a Chelsea defender and went for a midfield as they have to score a few in these games and clean sheets may come harder to find.

Chicharito, Pogba and Willian are the only weaknesses I see right now. We don't know whether chicharito would be starting games early in the season or whether he would be leading the attack. Willian can be a poor pick for that value if Chelsea don't hit the ground running.
Chicharito will play and he will as always score. Pogba I hope as United fan will have much better season than last one when we speak of assists and goals. Also he will probably take penalties and free kicks now and play with much more freedom now with Matic guarding him at the back. Willian will play because Hazard is injured and he is only 7m.
As I said my observation is that I am betting to much on Spurs and United.

Picking Kane ahead of Lacazette:

Lacazette - looks like he can score goals thus far but it's only pre season and didn't play 90 minutes yet. Wenger may continue that trend as he has the donkey still in the squad.

Kane - people worry about his slow starts but remember, this is the first year he will be playing first team football without having played in an international tournament beforehand.

Just remembered how frustrating these threads are. Everyone always tells all the best budget players and then I have to go changing to find new budget options because everyone now has my original ones

Really want to switch out Willian. Pretty much everyone seems to have him now. I think he'll do well but not much point having him if everyone else does. Not getting any extra points by having him. Still worried about potentially falling miles behind by not having him though. Worst year was Depay's signing when I didn't think he'd start well but everyone had him so I wimped out and chose him so I wouldn't fall behind. Should have gone with my original gut instinct.

Indeed. The only players from promoted teams I have a passing interest in at the minute are Ince, Ritchie and Gayle. Gayle and Ritchie have both flopped in the PL before and Ince is in a team surely destined for regular thrashings on the road to relegation.
I chose Rodriguez given that Pulis is showing plenty of trust in him and has scored a couple in pre-season too.

Problem is that they play Arsenal, City, United and Spurs in the first 9 GWs.

I have Mane and Salah too, btw. :D
Here is the conundrum I had last season - having more than one player from one of the big four is deferentially rewarding.

Fantastic GWs tend to be fewer where all of the lads in a single team had great rewards, so I have decided to use the scattergun approach and pick the best bets from the top sides to score and assist aplenty.

Your thoughts @coolredwine ?

That of course is true. The best bets always are the best and the second best players of the team. And their partnerships. A lot of people early last season benefitted from Costa-Hazard partnership. Before that Vardy-Mahrez.

But it also comes down to timing, predictions and then a bit of gamble after studying the trends. How quickly are you able to get a player in. How quickly are you willing to transfer out a player. Liverpool almost always is quick off the blocks. It makes sense to get in some of their attackers early. Spurs are a bit slow, so makes sense to wait for their players to get in their own.

For example, I had Defoe for majority of the last season, and at the right time, got in Kane and Alli (helped along with the fact that Mane was out for AFCon and then injured). A lot of people kept pursuing with Costa in the second half and suffered. Those who picked Alonso/Azpilicueta/Cahill early in the season greatly benefitted in terms of his value/price and so on.

A lot of players focus on the upcoming set of 5 games/month and prefer rotating. Some just focus on the starting XI and fill their squad with the cheapest players.

All said and done, I'm by no means a genius in this game. All of it is my opinion.

Clincher

Still I would like to have Kane and Eriksen early, considering that they have plenty of easy fixtures running upto mid-October.

Regardless, people over here would be banking on a few Southampton players to come good, but they were thrashed 4-0 by Augsburg yesterday

Aye they don't look good at all. They've sold too many important players in recent years and the ones they have now look like they'd rather be playing somewhere else.

Like I said further up the thread, their early fixtures might be flooded with green early doors but you wouldn't mind playing them.

Kane is obviously a must have right? Last three seasons;
2014/15 - 21 PL goals
2015/16 - 25 PL goals
2016/17 - 29 PL goals

Equivalent of going for the running hop at the start of a marathon race.
He was the first player I put in and then worked around him. He's actually 0.5 cheaper than I thought he would be as well

If you get the big boys in - Lukaku and Kane - you would need a couple of mid range clever midfield buys.

Chadli, Ritchie, Loftus Cheek -- the below 6M mark.

Willian and Wijnaldum -- the around 7M mark.

Your thoughts?

Banking on one Southampton player - RB, Cedric only returned to training on Monday.

Milivojevic is nailed on as a defensive mid, if memory serves me right?

Suprise that there is no mention of Tammy Abraham and Matt Ritchie in this thread. Some good championship players to add to your team at good values. Choosing captain for the first week will be a tough decision between a Liverpool or City player for me.

How's Bellerin for a buy folks? Is Wenger choosing a 3-4-3 over fullbacks in pre-season? :wenger:
Towards last season and this preseason, it seems Wenger is sticking with the 3-4-3 formation. With Chamberlain as the right wingback and Bellerin on bench. Which is surprising. Even though Chamberlain has been great in that role. I feel Wenger could find a way to incorporate both.

Yeah, Cedric might be moved out for someone else... possibly Daniels from Bournemouth.
Milojevic now takes their freekicks and pens and has already got a goal and assist in pre-season.

I originally had Ritchie but a few folks here have put me off him.

I've got him in my team at the moment. Partly because he's cheap but also because I genuinely fancy him to outscore the likes of Rodriguez, Austin and Gabbiadini.

Yeah he does. Annoyingly though he's been playing in the back 3. If he was classed as a defender in the game he'd be a no brainer.

There are actually really good options in the 4.5 - 5.5m range. Joe Allen, Capoue, Fraser , Milivojevic etc.

Really? I thought Bellerin would have been nailed on.

I would need to get even cheaper mids, as I am planning having KDB as well. Would prefer Jesus, but now I am not sure he is nailed on and imo KDB is the most secure starter for City.

What I would like to know is how Southampton will set up their attack - I would be really happy with Austin in my team.

Same. I must change my team about 18 times a day. Always think I'm about to hit on my perfect combo then I find I'm £1m short. Suggests they've got the pricing about right anyway.

Fwiw of your picks I actually think the second shades it (over the course of a season if not early doors).

Basically if I get a different 7 option that people don't generally have that could give me an advantage in points. The obvious risk is whether or not there is another 7 option who will get more points

That approach generally doesn't work. If you think a player is going to get a lot of points then you want to get him regardless of whether a lot of other people have got him or not.
