Lingard at RB?

No, just no.

He struggles further up field in the majority of games he plays. That and he is a weak little coward, who shirks most challenges.

We are Man Utd, if we need a right back and one isn't coming through the ranks who is a natural. Then buy one.

That's a bit harsh. He could sell pies in the stands.

Yeah true or you could dress him in a cheerleader outfit and he can cheer Pogba and lukaku on from the sidelines that is essentially what he does anyway. Gotta earn his 100k a week somehow :houllier:

However, he lacks the size and physicality for a typical outright full back so I am yet to be convinced that he could be anything more than a stop gap there. Wing back is a viable option though.
C'mon guys.

He's not a good crosser of the ball. He can't dribble past players either because he's too weak and gets easily out-muscled. He doesn't have any balance, the second he gets touched during a run he goes down. Whenever he's played on the wing he drifts centrally as much as Mkhi and Mata do. He's not suited to provide natural width, which is the main requirement for a wing back.

Defensively, the less that's said the better. Closing down people and covering space is not the same as being able to tackle, win aerial and ground duels, man-mark players etc. In fact we tried it against Real Madrid (of all teams!) in the super cup final and Carvajal was having a field day out there. Lingard had to be hauled off at half time.

I don't see any attributes that would mark him as a good wing back or full back. Running is not an attribute for a wing back. It's a basic attribute for an outfield footballer.

His best attributes are moving into space, usually centrally, and linking up with one-twos. He's got a good shot/finish on him too. His best position is as CAM though he'll never be the main man for Man Utd in that position.

I've heard it all now, we are talking about my #idontgetlingard right ? RB ? absolutely no chance, the only place for him is in the 'shop window'.

No, he is clearly not good enough at any position and will end up at Watford in couple of seasons.

Lingard completely lacks what Valencia had that allowed him to transition in to the role effectively whilst learning the position and what still is a big part of his game there, which is his combination of pace and power. That's Valencia's biggest asset at rb, he can make a mistake, switch of for a sec etc but has the recovery pace and power to get back in to it . Lingard simply can't do that and given he's not played the role it's unlikely he has the positional know-how to compensate.

Also he's not really proven to be an effective crosser either so not sure how much you get from him in an attacking sense.

Nah not really having it. He's too lightweight for all his bluster and there's a difference between hassling the opposition and the required discipline of fullback/wingback defensive duties.

We need to buy a right back, not shoe-horn someone in. That's literally what Valencia is already.

Not as a permanent figure, but considering he's a fairly hard worker he could be used for filling in there when Valencia's out.

Hard worker =/= Can defend
I'm not arguing he's a particularly good defender, I'm saying that if our squad was incredibly thin due to injuries or suspensions then we'd maybe be able to slot him back there for a game or two. It's not something I'd really want to see, as such, but if we had to do it then he'd potentially do okay.

Here's a quick list of players that I'd play ahead of Lingard at RB when Valencia's out...off the top of my head.

- Darmian
- Young
- Jones
- Bailly
- Smalling
- Tuanzebe
- Lindelof.... any more CB left? no. ok
- Herrera
- Jose Mourinho
- My dad

He is pretty average winger, so he might do the trick at RWB. RB? Not too sure. He is not physically imposing and don't have the stamina to last 90 minutes running up and down the right flank.

He's too lightweight, he's got the work rate and can track a man but feel he'd lose to many 50/50s which would leave us vulnerable defensively

He's not strong enough physically to play that position and doesn't even have as much pace as many people think. Ashley Young on the other hand would be ideal for us at LB or LWB IMO.

Lingard as right back ? Hiw about Lindelof as Striker as well ?

Try him, try him. Dont get a point here. We are in the mission of regaining EPL title. If we need a RB, buy one. Not converting a lightweight not-clear-what his position Lingard and expecting him to be a Valencia back up. And Valencia is better than Lingard. He is strong and quick, able to run back and forward consistently for 90 minutes.

Rather rebuy Rafael than trying to convert Lingard.

He is good at tracking back from an attacking position and can run all day, but as a full time right back, I'm not so sure about that. We might get away with it if we play 3 at the back, but that is the last thing I would want a United manager to do, play 3 at the back.

Lingard isn't good enough to be a starter for us in any position. Keep him as a squad option but there's no point wasting time or points by playing him out of position.

Curiously enough, Lingard already started as leftwingback, not as rightwingback. So, the thread makes even less sense.

Is he physically any weaker than Rafael was? I don't really see him playing RB myself. He's a backup for a few front-line positions and possible WB if we ever play a 3-5-2.

It's funny as I was thinking this exact same thing the other day and even started retraining Lingard as a right back on Football Manager ha ha.

In all seriousness though Lingard has a great engine, can beat a man, can cross and can basically do all of the things you'd want to see from an attacking right back although I have no idea on how he'd fare defensively.

You do have to think though that Dani Alves, Zambrotta, Valencia and Jordi Alba just to name a few were all wingers who became or are exceptional full backs and their natural attacking instincts were/are of great benefit.

I think as long as you have two centre backs and an out and out defensive midfielder in your team that allows for two attacking full backs, I personally don't see Lingard ever being a first choice player up the other end of the pitch so I don't see a problem with experimenting with him at right back against smaller teams.

If he can do all of this we won't have been thinking of removing him from the right wing !

The fact is Lingard has only one thing and that's good off ball movement. He lacks everything else.

Spot on. best post of this thread.

Lingard is a poor cam, and even poorer winger and if he was RB, we'd be giving the opposition a free game down his side.

He just isn't good enough for a starting spot at utd, in any position

I'm not one to see Lingard as whipping boy... He did play a major role in us winning the FA and League cups, and seems to play his butt off for the team, which is more than can be said for some of the much more talented players to come through United in recent years.

That being said, I in no way want to see him converted to RB or RWB. He's a squad level player who can cover both wings and the attacking midfield, and that is just fine. No reason to try and turn him into something he doesn't have the physicality for.

On top of that, we've got Fosu-Mensah out on loan learning the RB/RWB trade at Palace right now. If he can prove his worth in the Premier League in this loan season, I see no reason to think he cannot be the eventual successor to Valencia.

Next we'll have Lingard for centre back and then Lingard for goalkeeper - after all he must be good at something, mustn't he? Maybe not.
Poor Jesse. He'll end up filing in the office even though everything's been computerised. Then in time no one will remember who or why he was ever employed.
I am that person

Can't see it. He just walks away when someone embarrasses him, and you can't have that in defense.

Mensah plays RCB as part of a back three.
