https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/jose-mourinho-interview-romelu-lukaku-would-now-be-worth-150m-neymar-changed-everything-dqm3c5d06

"I think Lukaku on August 31 would have been £150m. Matic would have been £60m or £70m. Neymar changed everything."

"I think we were very clever. We thought something could happen that could change the market forever. After Neymar everything changed."

"People look to the £200m figure now. Now the players of £20m became £40m, the players of £40m became £60m and everything changed."

"Lukaku and Matic, now, would have cost us £200m in total. But because we did it in the first part of the summer, it was much less."

...say what you want about José but the man is bang on about practically everything in this interview. Talk about foresight with the transfer market inflation as well.

Truly the special one

@VancouverUtdFan have you got a link to the article you can post? I had to delete the images out as newspapers are very hot on us having full articles posted up in threads.

Nice interview. Gotta appreciate how he brings in the "Time" factor to help advance his watch sponsor. Sneaky, manipulative, but effective. You can see how he crafts his words & messages. Brilliant, but at times a bit pointed or maybe even harsh. A lot of barbs thrown out there in that interview.

Interesting stuff. He's right about the short-term thing - he was given the boot under ridiculous circumstances by Abramovic in his first spell at Chelsea, and left both Porto and Inter for bigger jobs having just won the CL.

Not sure he needs to be having a dig at Wenger, Guardiola etc though.

Bit of reverse engineering from Jose, Lukaku is never worse more than 75 million on any day of this year.

I like it that he isn't getting carried away with our start either...I agree with his statement of teams claiming they play well but lose as nonsense,it's either you win with style or just win.Don't come with the bollocks of playing well and losing.

I don;t really think it's a dig. He just doesn't see football the same way as them.

Guys please don't post links to the full text of articles unless it's the original site, especially when the original is behind a paywall.

a 24 year old striker who just scored 25 goals in the league? When Coutinho is being valued at double that post-Neymar I think you're mistaken

Also I support him having digs at Klopp who can't seem to help but mention United directly or indirectly every time he opens his mouth
I am not sure anyone can whinge about another manager having digs at them when defending Mourinho. The man cannot help himself mentioning every other manager under the sun at every given opportunity.

Definitely think there is the hint of a dig at Fergie in there for leaving the squad in the manner in which he did. Also, not sure he can really claim he left Inter in a place for prolonged success. Really good interview though, he comes across well and I'm very glad we have his sort of character in charge.

Not whinging at all. Just don't care if he has a dig at Klopp who isn't some wide eyed innocent in throwing barbs. Mou generally hasn't had any digs at Pep or Poch since becoming United manager I can remember, 2 who seem to focus on their own team's issues.

I doubt it's a dig at Fergie. If I had to guess I'd say that Mourinho views what happened there as a failure on the part of Moyes, and probably believes that he would have done a far better job at keeping United on top and competitive.

I haven't seen the interview but when he talks about needing another summer window, is he meaning in regards to the CL or just in general?

I took the last part as him saying that he won't wait until the summer to spend again. Griezmann in January?

Are players still Cup tied in CL, or have the rules changed?

I think the part where he alludes to managers, theoretically, being at a club for 20+ years but leaving it in position of weakness in comparison to the level it was over the course of their tenure could be applied to Fergie. As is pointed out in the article, it's probably more likely a dig at Wenger (when is it not?) but seeing as Fergie is the only manager to have spent that type of time period at one big, successful club during Jose's career, it's hard not to see some sort of link.

Hardly. Fergie left a team that had won the league at a canter.

Don't think he meant spending when he said won't wait.

“I have said three [summer] transfer windows is what I need to have the team I want to have, the team I think can bring Manchester United to the top of English football and to close the gap to the top of European football again, and I still think we need that third transfer window, but I’m not going to wait for the third transfer window to try to reach it.

Bold is what I think he meant by not waiting.

Wow.

Dig at Fergie?

There would be absolutely no context for that. He clearly respects (or wants to be seen as doing so) Fergie and all he has done over the years is to acknowledge Fergie as football's managerial benchmark. Why will he suddenly start having digs at him? I am not even sure he was having a dig at anyone but if he was, Wenger would be the most likely candidate.

Having digs at Fergie will be a very bad move for him right now and I think he is smart enough to know that unless, of course, he has totally lost his mind.

It wasn't a dig at Fergie. It was a dig at Wenger. As if he's going to criticise Fergie. People reading what they want to read.

He's not having a dig at Fergie, even if he might think Fergie left the club not in the best state (which is probably true) he's come out and said he would never have sold Chica and Welbeck. Then he refers to Moyes always as David, whilst speaking of Mr. van Gaal, which is an obvious affront. I'm not sure the club tried to go after him when SAF retired, but if not, I'm sure he feels (rightly) that it was incredibly poor judgement on the club's part.

I do think he would like to achieve things here that SAF didn't, which is to really make a mark in Europe. To do that, he would need to stay for at least 7-8 years and create a stellar side.

That's not an affront. Jose considers LvG as his mentor, hence the respect. But he regards Moyes, Conte etc as his peers, so often calls them by their first names.

Surely it's fine to post what he said just not a link to avoid the paywall.
Erm, that'd be the absolute opposite of fine because not only do you get the content free, you don't even advertise their site.
