Wayne Rooney will not be tempted out of international retirement for one more shot at World Cup glory.

The former England captain, who on Friday was charged with drink driving, called time on his international career in August.

England's record goalscorer said "now is the time to bow out" after scoring 53 goals in 119 games for his country and taking part in three World Cups and three European Championships.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Rooney also hit out at former England manager Fabio Capello revealing he and his coaching staff were cheering for Italy during the 2010 World Cup.

On the prospect of playing in next summer's World Cup in Russia, the 31-year-old says he will go back on his decision.

"My mind's made up," he confirmed.

"I've seen it a few times when players come out of retirement and gone to tournaments and it's not right.

"I think the lads now who are trying to qualify for Russia, if they get there they're the players who will deserve to play in the tournament, so my decision is made."

Rooney's three World Cup appearances all ended in heartache.

He was sent off during the 2006 quarter-final exit to Portugal, while 2010 ended in a second-round defeat to Germany and England failed to progress from their group in 2014.

Rooney looked dire in his last few international tournaments, an absolute passenger in 2010 and 2012 - made worse by the "Nice to hear your own fans boo ya" jibe at the cameras after drawing 0-0 with Algeria.

Capello tried to coax Scholes out of retirement for WC 2010, he later regretted not going.

Is that really a bad thing? They're not going to stop supporting their country

He didn't have much to cheer about then. Italy were even worse than England in that World Cup.

And Rooney says watching Capello and his coaches cheering on Italy during the tournament was probably the final straw for his reign.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, Rooney said: “Capello’s English wasn’t great, and it just didn’t feel right. He brought his backroom staff in and they were all Italian and it just didn’t feel right.

“I remember at the World Cup in South Africa, Fabio and his coaches were watching Italy play and they were cheering when Italy scored, and he was there as England manager.

“I don’t think that was right. It didn’t work and we had to move on.”

Obviously, Capello didn't let him get sh!tfaced on international duty.

Shit world cup saved by Forlan.

Messi, Ronaldo, Drogba, and Rooney all disappointed.

England terrible and capello worse. He picked and started Heskey. Crouch or Bent or Defoe should have started with Rooney even though Rooney was rushed back and clearly wasn't fit.

Worst world cup I've witnessed.

I suspect any interview Rooney does is pre-prepared and worked out by clever PR reps, apart from the times he goes acoustic and accapella with his thoughts and we've all seen what happens there. It's like taking your Nan to a wedding party, that one time you turn your back to go for a wee she ends up naked, dancing on a table and doing the Hitler salute.

Or is that just my Nan?

That's the second World Cup in my lifetime I took no interest in, I was in Australia that summer and didn't know much about it given where we were and the lack of technology at the time. I wasn't at all surprised when I came back home and found out though.

The other world cup I didn't take any notice of was 94, cos I was at Butlins in Bognor :D now that's something I'd recommend to anyone trying to avoid a world cup. It might help if you're 16 and end up spending the week with a big breasted blonde Essex girl but if that's out the question you can't beat the mini train to Brighton with a bag of Butlins bitter and some 20/20
