Perfect for the 3 at the back system.
Wouldn't say perfect. It's a system that exposes his flaws a defender the least. He's to blame for the equalizer I feel. Jogs away from Wijnaldum and is too slow to react to Liverpool's attack leaving him unmakerd at the 6 yard box.

Another severely underrated player by the CAF.

Best defender in the league this season by some distance too.

Though most of the credit goes to Conte for hiding his flaws and enabling his strengths.
One could say the same about pretty much every defender though no? I am not sure there is a defender playing today or in the past 10 years who did not have flaws. The secret has always been to tailor a system that minimizes them.

He is great, but I still think Alderweireld is a better CB.

The Swedish commentators were banging on about how Mignolet gets caught unawares and claimed the goal was his fault... as if he was saving it even if he was set & ready.

Ridiculous free-kick.

Agree that Alderweireld is a better defender but in Chelsea's current system, I would imagine Conte wouldn't swap him for any other defender in World football.

That is very true.

Come to think of it, a defence of Alderweireld, Luiz and Azpi would be fantastic next season for Chelsea. I don't know why there aren't many big clubs in for him. He's tall, quick, great on the ball, a great leader and in his prime years.

What. Moses sticking his head in and deflecting the ball made that one impossible to defend. Moses is fecking shit btw.

But anyway. Luiz was great yesterday. The way he brings the ball out of defense is very impressive.

Been one of the best in league this season, i have always rated him as a footballer but questioned his defensive ability due to his rashness and positioning but credit where it is due he has been excellent.

The old Chelsea freekick routine perfected back in the day by Drogba and Ballack. Dont know why more players dont use this technique.

When he sticks to defending like Conte has him doing, he is very good. Best centre back in the league this season.

He has been awesome this season.

Unbelievable that some on the caf don't rate him, he'd walk into our defense.

I've been saying this for years. Best CB in the league and one of the best in the world, easily.

Getting tired of this "media stigma" around him. He has his moments but so does every defender. More often than not, he is world class.

You could defend it by being closer to the man that was free inside the box. Defending 1v1 is to be between the opposition and the goal. Luiz was behind Wijnaldum the whole time because he pressed out of the defense and didn't bother to track back again properly.

You're fine with him being so far behind Wijnaldum for the goal when he was doing nothing else in the meantime?
The goal was on Moses. Just like both of the Dele Alli goals were mostly his fault. Moses on all 3 goals was caught way out of position sucked in too far in the box rather than marking the player at the far post.

Really easy to see he's not a natural defender and teams are specifically targeting that weakness.

To think people were comparing him to Stones not long ago.

He's a top top defender who for some reason gets very bad rep. Also, a lot more proven in the top competitions than his overrated as feck Brazilian teammate at CB.

He's ridiculously good on the ball.

From the moment Coutinho took his shot that was blocked Luiz didn't look at Wijnaldum. I've painted the picture well here.

What's missing from the video I'm using is the replay from behind the goal. There you can see the Luiz' reaction clearly when he notices that he forgot about Wijnaldum. It's something I noticed immediately during the game.

In short. He presses poorly and goes out of position. He forgets his man. He's slow to react to the change of phase in Liverpool's attack.

I always said he was good but his mistakes get more criticism than when other centerbacks makes more or the same mistakes.

These performances should earn him a recall to the NT.

Thought he played brilliantly all game, then completely let himself down at the end with a moronic challenge.

Brainless idiot. Too concerned with messing with Sanchez so he loses the ball and dives in. That little step to the left he took immediately before the tackle would infuriate me. Play the ball, not the man.

Totally deserved red card. I have never liked him, ever since he dived to get Rafael sent off in a previous game and I always considered him a cheater since then.

Nice to see a ref have the bottle to send him off, gets away with too much too often, it was a terrible challenge on the Arsenal player.

He was falling when he reached for it. Dumb foul but looked a lot worse than it was.
Obviously because Kolisinac could continue but his follow through studs first over the ball challenge could also have done serious arm.

It's a big problem with him how easy he loses his cool.

A true legend of the game, in his own way. Today's red is only a further testimony to that.

He hasn't lost his cool since he came back from PSG, people were just waiting for something like this so they could bring up the 'always loses his head' narrative. In the same timeframe Cahill has done worse about half a dozen times.

Just read Graeme Souness banging on about how he should have been sent off for the high foot because it was "no different to Mane". I can only assume that Souness is trying to prove the oddest of points because surely he cannot be that stupid.

I'm not a fan of Michael Oliver as he's always struck me as a very weak referee but credit where it's due. He held his nerve and made a sensible call on the high foot despite the absolute tripe being spouted since that Mane incident by the entire Sky Sports team.
