Deeney's done well for himself and Watford. He admits he's not the best but gets the job done by working hard to overcome his shortcomings.

Best line in that interview was Martin Keown being "too nice"!

He's not the most eloquent of lads, but I guess he's a footballer not a lawyer. He's go that fighting attitude that makes you love him as a player if he's yours. It comes across even on the interview.

Said the same thing on football today a few weeks ago. Wasn't at the least worried about this tie and it's easy to see why.

I thought it was very honest, not smug at all. He just told the truth.

Football ey, if Özil bags that chance the game is over - but Watford gets a cheap penalty and then Deeney takes the moral high-ground because he has to make up for what he lacks in talent - poor fella. Arsenal were unlucky and lost it in the end, credit to Watford. Tactical misconduct from Wenger, had little to do with Deeney - he scored a penalty and did nothing else.

How many threads do you need about us? 2000?

We are shit, we know it. We are finishing 8th. What do you want more? To get relegated?

That was fecking brilliant. Seen him do punditry and hear him say other things outside of the game before (him respecting Bailly/Fosu Mensah) but this was good to watch.

He knows what he is and just 'owns' it.

Serves Arsenal right for the murder they have gotten away with in recent seasons.

Wenger has been bailed out by the refs so many times when he needs a win to get the flip flop arsenal fans to sing his name. Everytime Arsenal are on the brink of a capitulation to mid table they get a string of decisions for them which gives them a streak of wins. Unfortunately for them theyll be mid table anyway because of the competition at the top.

 what absolute bollocks. You have to love everyone rah-rah'ing the "get stuck up in 'em" mantra. Where was this when they got piped by City for 6?
Well as Deeney said, if you're going to be a precision passing/technical team, then you better be a 10/10 team (which City more or less is.) Arsenal isn't, and that's why they are susceptible to teams like Watford and players like Deeney.

That is bollocks. You can't be technical unless you have 100% execution?

It would be hilarious if this was the opinion of a few people, not the viewpoint of the majority of English football.

Agree. Crazy to claim such thing.

Watford had their chances vs City. City pressed well while Watford stupidly tried to play out from the Hama plenty mistake leading to open the doors for City to have a go. Not some kind of myth that City was formidable that 100% passing rate and walked the ball into Watford net. Watford didn't create much this game also, just Arsenal being down tool toward the end and collapsed as a team. Nothing to do with style of play. More about weak mentality

Some refreshing honesty, even to do with giving his son some needle about supporting Arsenal.

Is it not cultural though? Aren't the city lads usually seen as "fake hard"? I've always seen United as the real deal type of team, hard northen battle-born warriors ready to battle if their skill doesn't get them over the line their fight will. Arsenal have always been the team in my mind that was "fake hard" (except that invincibles team who were the real deal).

It was a similar thing growing up playing Rugby. All of the north shore and city boys that play rugby are all 'fake hard', rich daddy's boys who grew up with the world given to them on a platter. I grew up in the rough areas and was always up for anything in a game. I get the sense it is a similar "poser" mentality undercurrent here, but I could just be projecting on it.

I'd consider a player's opinion here tbh. There were other factors in Arsenal's loss (luck, change in Silva's tactics, Koscielny and Welbeck going off) but football has a physical and mental side to it too. Arsenal have been vulnerable there for years now.

Problem is, the level of players is going down too, and reaching the stage where opponents like Watford are starting to overwhelm them by pressurizing them. That won't work against City because a) they're too good for that, b) the intensity under Guardiola is more than enough to deal with opposition pressure, tactical physical or psychological.

Deeney is not a coach or journalist. He can't tell us what Watford did tactically or give holistic reasons for Arsenal's decline. What he can tell though, is what his approach is as an experienced player and kudos for his honesty, he spoke without any political correctness.

Turns out, getting stuck in works against Arsenal. But we've known that for years now, haven't we?

Not what he says though, is it? He says if you aren't up for a fight, if you aren't going to contest physically, you better be top drawer it comes to the technical aspects. Arsenal aren't.

This interview is great. Deeney seemed like an interesting figure when I was watching that behind the scenes show NBC had with Watford. But, this is sort of mentality is why Watford will have less and less use for someone like him once their standards raise.

Also, Arsenal are relying on guys like Xhaka, Coquelin, Elneny and Ramsey in midfield. They need more technicians not less.

I dont think it's as simple as that. Around 25 mins to go in the second half Arsenal were doing nothing beside that chance. Like Deeney said they didn't lose because of the penalty. They had a game seemingly under control, took the gas off the pedal and in typical arsenal fashion gave the game away. Deeney is right they've lacked that mental fortitude it's almost like there's really no pride in being an arsenal player within the squad and the telling thing is that it's been that case for a while

More players should speak their mind like this. I’m sick of them all reading scripts and coming out with the generic media trained responses.

Let loose and build the game up!

Yup. This thread wouldn't exist if Arse took all their numerous chances. Especially in the first half.
