Lucky for Barca it's also 500k before tax seeing as he doesn't pay tax.

Not too happy with this, we wont see the best of Messi anymore I fear. He carries them ans they are so dependent on him, as a neutral fan a move to PSG or City would be great as I feel we'd get the Messi of a few years ago back. The best player since Ronaldo9.

Well, there it is. Interesting timing, wonder what sort of assurances were given - hopefully on personnel although not really his style to dictate

Personally, I'm thrilled but admit there's a small part of me that wondered if it would've been better for him to go to City with Pep. The fans are rewarded and for that, it's hard to imagine him abandoning the club - cule through & through. The board though, they don't deserve him

That's bonkers. Wanting him to move to City.

Thank feck. Could only see him going City if he didn’t sign a new contract.

Give peas a chance.
That tweet just made me think Elvis Costello. Fits pretty well...

HE! may be the reason I survive, the why and where for I'm alive, the one I'll care for through the rough and rainy years.

Me I'll take his laughter and his tears, and make them all my souvenirs, for where he goes I got to be.

The meaning of my life is He, He, He.

Too bad! Would have liked to have seen him at another club/in another country while he's still at the top, even if that other club was City.

I do think it's something he may look back on that when he retires and may have some regrets that he never. It's something Ronaldo did, won a Ballon d'Or in another country and both Ronaldo and Messi are going be remembered alongside Pele and Maradonna when they retire.

It would have been the ideal time to leave, this Barcelona team/era is not the Barcelona team/era Messi will be remembered for, so would have been the ideal time for another challenge and to create another legacy somewhere else.

That small part will go away, the mere thought off Messi away from Barca is every cules nightmare so just rejoice mate, no matter how bad th board letting Messi go elsewhere is collateral insanity even a leave voter wouldn't entertain.

Absolutely delighted at this news:D

I'm glad he's signed. It'd be a shame to see him move, much like it would have been odd to see Giggs or Scholes in another shirt.

I expect Barcelona to rebuild around him.

He was never going to leave. Messi belongs to Barca, Messi is Barca.

I know of two city fans in my office who thought it was a sure thing that he would sign for Guardiola like his whole career was defined by him.

Messi to city was never gonna happen. Just because rafael Hernandez wants it to happen doesn’t really mean that was gonna happen.

Are you a Barca fan or a City (pep) fan?

Still not high enough to put off PSG, if Barca go around poking the hornets nest again (ie trying to unsettle their players), Qatar will buy him out.
I'm sure Barça would be heartbroken losing a near 31 year old for 700m!
This contract is insane

Can somebody explain to me the point of buyout clauses? If they don't want to sell him, why put it in there? Is this coming from the players and their agents?

If they had that attitude, theyd have cashed in on him, im sure psg or city would be more than happy to pay £250m+ now, MEssi is Barca, they cant afford to lose him.
Yes but there's a massive difference between 700m v 250m

Because of the ripple effect, I dont think you'd actually get any more players for 250m v 700m, we saw that this summer with Neymar. If a club knows that Barca has 700m, then that has the effect of raising prices, so in both cases it would probably buy two elite level players, then the clubs that receive the money from Barca, prices also rise for them so that they can probably buy one player for the money they get from Barca, and so forth, until the money gets re-distributed throughout,

Was going to say he's obviously going to retire at Barca but isn't the plan for him to play one season in Argentina before retiring? Aguero also wants to do this.

I've always wondered if he really ever had that much affinity for Argentina? He's been in Barcelona since he was a kid

As Skills says above, I'm not convinced he's that bothered about Argentina. I think the "playing in Argentina" business is more about building a relationship with his compatriots so they get behind him for the national team. I think he'll retire at Barcelona and live there his entire life. I wouldn't be surprised if either of his sons make it to that level, they choose Spain.
