SSN saying deal agreed and he'll be at the game later.

What do we make of that?

I'm surprised he's got another top job given the England fiasco but I guess Everton really are desperate at the moment. I think it's pretty sad for them as they have totally tried to reinvent the club's philosophy in recent times to one that actually plays football yet now it looks like they are sliding back to where they were trapped for so long in the bottom half.

Not sure Big Sam will stick around either.

Everton need to make sure they stay in the Premier League first and foremost. So in that respect they’ve got the right man.

But after investing so badly this summer gone, they need to buy into the reality that they are not going to surpass mid-table in the near future unless some kind of miracle occurs.

The appointment they need right now. He'll pull out one of his usual miracles and save them from relegation then leaves by the end of the season.

Poor coach?

Fashionable, no. But he's a great coach, some of you need to take the hipster shades off.

Their position, ideal for 18 months.

As was expected. Not pretty but will probably get them out of the relegation zone and is a better option than Pulis.

Great decision to be honest. Knows the league inside and out and will do good for them to stabilize them in the league.

Mystifying really how so many poor coaches are merely recycled one year after another
That is harsh on Allardyce, he does not play the greatest football, but he is far from a poor coach imo.

Poor coach? He's a great coach, gets the players playing for him and to his game plan in no time. It's just a shame that they are probably just getting him in as a stop gap to guarantee safety before sacking him the minute a high profile coach agrees to take over. I think he could do really good things with this Everton team, it's been a while since he had a decent squad to manage.

He'll leave before they sack him imo. He's going to manage them this season only as usual.

Wonder if Big Sam will ever get another shot at England? Could’ve done alright in next years World Cup had he been with the current squad since his appointment.

Meh, he'll keep them up but at best he'd be a solidly mid-table manager who plays fairly dull football. He'll get a year or two but if they find someone better eventually then it'd make sense to go for them.

Expected move. Everton could have done a lot worse but it looks like a consolidation move rather than a leap forward, in stark contrast to what their fans were promised after a record summer outlay.

Correct appointment. They have an awful squad with no goalscorers, no pacey and/or dangerous wide-men except maybe Bolasie who's still injured, no distributor in midfield, no cover for Coleman who they've missed and aging CB's who are shipping goals.

The right thing to do was swallow their pride and admit they're in a relegation battle. They've done that by getting Big Sam. Doesn't inspire a great deal going forwards (although he's always said he thinks he should get a crack at a top 4 club, if he keeps Everton up it'll be interesting to see what he does with a budget for once) but if you're battling the drop in the PL, he's up there at the top of the list of managers you'd want to appoint.

I'm not so sure about that. I think his style of football is dull because of the type of player he's had at his disposal in the past. Look at Palace, no budget and a pretty horrible squad but did really well with them. West ham, it was no secret they wanted him out because he wasn't playing the "West ham" brand of football, but they've just got worse and worse since sacking him. Sunderland, had one of the worst squads in the league and he worked miracles with them...they all had pretty terrible squads with no budget and not ones capable of playing a decent brand of football (look at what happened to palace when they tried with De Boer). The last time he had some real flair players was....Bolton? I think if they actually back him in the market they could be a top 7 team for sure. But this smacks of West Ham where the owners will be looking to be rid of him at every opportunity.

You're kind of highlighting my point here, though. He's a solid mid-table manager who'll get a relegation-contending side to punch above their weight but he's never going to do much more than that. He deliberately buys the type of player who suits his fairly drab style. His Bolton side wasn't too bad sometimes and had some decent players, which is why he's a better manager than Pulis/Moyes etc, but he's still not particularly special and if Everton were able to genuinely identify a better manager in time then it'd make sense for them to eventually go for that manager ahead of Allardyce.

That's impossible.
Why? Forgot a lot of the details surrounding his dismissal but wasn’t it more because the FA felt they had no other option than to sack him? Being in the public eye

No it was a real scandal. FA can't appoint him again that easily as if nothing has happened.

He fecked up his chance of being England manager once and for all.

Unlikely. The only clubs he's really left by choice are the ones who failed to financially back him. Or they have shit owners like West Ham.

Everton will be a very good fit for him, and if he gets good results they may well oversee his philosophy.

I don't think he'll stay for a long time but let's see.

Good appointment for the situation they are in. Anyone saying he's not a good coach is just wrong. Is he the man to take them forward as a club? Most likely not, but it not about that at the moment. They are currently struggling badly and Big Sam should give them what they need.

And after that? Everton will have a bunch of surplus players that their next manager will in all probability want rid of because they've hired someone whose style is totally at odds with Allardyce's.

It's not hipster to want football clubs to show a bit more foresight and adequately scout managers across Europe, that might, just might see them avoid fighting fires every 18 months.

Instead Everton are turning to a manager that has won precisely nothing and whose career has mostly resided at the wrong end of the table - there's a reason for that.

Allardyce will keep them up, he'll organise the defence and sign a striker in January. Beyond that, Everton will achieve little in the way of progress.

same as Moyes
He's light years ahead of Moyes in terms of motivating and organising quickly, look at their time at Sunderland, they fought for Allardyce and went down with a whimper under Moyes.

He'll keep them up. That's all he will do though. If I was Palace I'd be demanding compensation from him for walking away and claiming he had retired (let's face it, none of us genuinely believed that)

its the same argument though. Big Sam had been hired and sacked so many times that I lost count. Yet he still manages to find a job at decent clubs. That's unbelievable.

You'd take him at United then?

If there's one thing Allardyce isn't, it's great. Trusted, yes. Great, feck no.

Yet he’s still allowed to manage FA registered clubs? Wasn’t it something about him being able to show foreign investors how to get around FA transfer rules?

I see where your coming from, just don’t think it’s completely impossible he could be England manager again. It’d look bad, yeah, but worse things have happened in football.

They'll look really bad in front of anyone after the way he was sacked by and for, but I see you have a point, that we can expect anything from FA anyway.

I think it's a good appointment as long as it's only until the end of the season. Big Sam should be able to keep them up and then in the summer Everton can look at appointing a long term manager in Silva, Dyche or Fonseca etc.

You can be a great coach and not be what United need.... Wenger, Ancelotti, Klopp are great coaches. Would i want them at United? No.

It's not though, Moyes spectacularly failed at both United and Sunderland and made a mess of the Sociedad job to boot. Allardyce wasn't sacked by either Sunderland or Palace and doesn't look a broken man like Moyes. He's a much safer bet than Moyes post United and Sunderland.
