Manchester United defender Eric Bailly may need surgery on a "serious" ankle injury, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The 23-year-old centre-back, who Mourinho said was injured while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, has not played for United since the defeat at Chelsea on 5 November.

He is not expected to miss the rest of the season.

"I don't want to be so pessimistic. I want to leave it with a doctor," said Mourinho.

"We are trying a conservative treatment. If the conservative treatment is not resulting, probably he will have a surgery procedure but let's wait a little bit more."

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones started Wednesday's 1-0 win over Bournemouth, and Mourinho said he was happy with his options at centre-back.

"During the whole season, we've had problems with central defenders but because the number is four or five, we manage always to have [players available] and Chris Smalling is playing amazingly well for seven or eight matches in a row maybe, so we are fine."

Bailly was the first player to sign for United after Mourinho took over as manager, joining from Villarreal in the summer of 2016 for £30m.

He's becoming the new Phil Jones. Can't seem to string any games together.

It's his second season. He had 38 games for us last season (before that he had 35 appearances for Villareal 15/16). He's missed 19 games in the last 3 seasons. In the same period Jones has missed 69 games. This is a bit of a lazy comparison.

Yeah I'm not surprised that his inquiry is serious. No timeline was given and very little was said about his injury.

If it's truly needed go off and get the surgery, we have four good defenders to cover him.

The worst thing we can do is continue with 'conservative treatment' ad infinitum, which wastes ours and Bailly's time and may not even satisfactorily fix the issue. The nightmare scenario of having a young player continually break down and worsen his injury because we didn't take decisive action early on is something we should avoid at all costs.

Maybe Jose wants to see if he can play any games before the African Nations Cup in the middle of January and then send him to the surgeon instead.

Another injury prone centre-back - just what our squad needed. Great signing from our esteemed manager.

I think AFCON will now take place in the summer(?) and not in Jan. Besides, the next one is in 2019.
My bad. Got the two cups confused, i.e. the main one and the one for domestic players. Get him to the doctor!

Great signing when fit but we have suffered with injury prone cb's since Rio, vidic and evra retired.

Sure it's nothing we're doong at the club 'e recovery or training but it's becoming an all to familiar story.

Heard Pogba is also under conservative treatment for his hamtring problem early this season.

But I agree with you. A defender should never keep playing through injury since the level of intensity and aggressiness he's facing every game in his position. Continuing to play can cause damage making that injury more serious and take longer to heal

As has been said many times very few professionals are 100% fit all the time, very often a condition or niggle is being managed. As we're not on the medical team we can't say exactly what should be done in the best interest of player, all I'm saying is I hope if the choice was between monitoring the injury and seeing what happens for an extended period of time or getting in with corrective surgery now United would go with the second option.

He's our best centre back and has potential to be one of the very best in the world one day but these injuries he keeps picking up are frustrating as hell. Wish him a speedy recovery, hopefully he's back soon.

Certainly one of our best aquisitions. He is needed in the side. Almost on a par with Pogba. Replacing him with Lindelöf just shows how much we miss him. If it's surgery he needs best to get it sorted so he can return ASAP.

I really hope he returns soon, luckily we have enough coverage at the back, especially now that Lindelof is showing signs why we bought him. His last couple of performances have been good.

This is so frustrating. We really do seem to pick up an inordinate amount of injuries compared to other big teams.

Him and Pogba are the part of the spine of our team but they've missed so many games this season and it's swt to become worse.

Can't catch a break on our defensive injuries. At least Rojo is back and Lindelof is started to find his gear. Need to keep Jones fit and we should be okay. Good thing we didn't Jones or Smalling.

Sucks but best for his long term health. Very young still and has a bright, promising future ahead of him.

Really broke out this season too and was truly world class when he played. Hoping he can return to that form whenever it is he comes back. Do not care if he comes back prior to the season ending or not...as long as he fully recovers. Better safe than sorry and no point in especially rushing him back if City keep up the ridiculous pace they’re on and there’s no real competition for the title by the time Bailly is near recovered.

Aye it's for the best as far as I can see. If he's back this season fully firing for the run-in that'll do nicely.

How do Utd players seem to be injured for ridiculously long times these days? Surely state of the art medical facilities should mean players are firstly in peak condition and secondly, get best treatment?

Zlatan and Rojo aside, players like Shaw, Jones & not Bailley just seem to pick up nothing injuries and be out for months at a time. I remember Hargreaves slating Man Utd medics when he jumped ship like the rat he is. Maybe he had a point?

Ideally we'd be absolutely feked but if lindelof continues his current upwards form, we can probably do fine defensively for around 2 months

Shame for him, but not concerned about his absence.

We're the only team in the top six who can comfortably change up their centre back pairing without it causing much disruption. It's a luxury to be able to use different combinations at the back without compromising on stability.

This is a massive shame. Lindelof aside, we looked good at the back this season so hopefully he should be too much of a miss.Even Lindelof has looked the business the last few weeks to be fair to him. Anyway, hope Baily gets the recovery time he needs and comes back strong.

Perhaps this is why Jose bought Lindelof when we had more pressing areas to strengthen. Our defenders always seem to get injured every season without exception

out for 3 months

Smalling, Lindeloff, Rojo, Jones and Tuanzebe are cover enough. Given Jones will be injured that's still 4 CBs. None as good as him but would like to see Smalling/ Lindeloff/Tuanzebe back 3

What a strange thing to say. He wasn't injury prone before coming to us!

We certainly have some sort of jinx with centre backs, even with Jose, who has made a career in limiting injuries.
