I have this idea that most strikers defend the zone ahead of the first post, but his unfortunate clearances lately has all been more directly in front of goal. Perhaps he should be used there instead, as he is pretty good in the air.

He's big so its tempting to play him as a free safety and let him win defensive headers but his composure is so poor that I'd be happy to stick him at the edge of the box to wait for the out ball and start the counters.

I don't know if many people noticed this but RvP was amazing at defending set pieces in his time here.
His reactions are too slow and he can't think fast under pressure which makes him an awful defensive candidate from set pieces
He was, I just passed it off as hes brilliant on getting on the end of and directing attacking headers, so it’s just natural he’s able to do it the other way (especially when a specific target isn’t so important).
I guess my logic doesn’t always hold though.
Don't get why he is in the box at home against Burnley so early in to the match. Why not have him just outside to make use of his pace and eye for a pass???

He's a bit of a weakling is lukaku. I think people who only see the odd highlights of his successful performances assume he's a bulldozer of a player. He's actually a gentle giant most of the time. Odd he's the only player who's physicality comes and goes

If Lukaku was upfield and say Rashford or Mata in his position and we conceded, people would be asking why Lukaku isn't in the box to provide extra size against a team like Burnley. We've been bad at defending set pieces for a while, it's just that we're conceding more goals now. Jose has changed the assignments from last season and he has a taller squad but it seems to have gotten worse. Personally I'd love to see DDG come out more often and thwack the ball at setpieces. I know it's not really his game and he never seems totally confident doing it but we can't go on like this.

Nah, people wouldn't do that because Lukaku has showed on multiple occasions he is a liability when defending. It's not like we weren't warned recently.
Van Persie and Berbatov were excellent at defending corners so making this about Mourinho is bollocks because SAF did it too. Strikers especially one's that are 6'3 should be good at this especially in the near post area.
At Chelsea, Mourinho had Drogba do it effectively while leaving Robben and Duff at the half way line for the counter. It's not a defensive tactic because Lukaku should be capable of carrying out the task, the problem is he's cumbersome in everything that he does.
