Blitz is exciting, but almost impossible to follow. When Fedoseev sacrificed a piece in the final game, you need to be at least 2000+ to keep up. Seeing that Nxe8 protects the queen in the end is just baffling.

Busy time for chess these days, January 3rd has also Speed Chess Championship between Carlsen and Nakamura. Starts at 6 pm british time or 7 pm best time.

Matches start with 90 minutes of 5|2 blitz, continue with 60 minutes of 3|2 blitz, and end with 30 minutes of 1|1 bullet.

But actually, Inarkiev himself made an illegal move first, and then Carlsen did as well, and apparently, first one isn't disqualifying so to say, but the second one is.

Weird rule. I think Magnus should feel a bit cheated. Well, not *cheated*, rules are rules...but, well dunno. Will certainly pay more attention to that as well from now on.

Thanks, though, I'm on desktop. chess24 will do, they improved the board look in stream, which is also almost real time as well with coverage.

As for Carlsen match. He lost, then it was a draw, now reading it's his win. Rollercoaster, and it's only round 1!

Think this was timeline:

Carlsen puts in check Inarkiev.
Inarkiev, while still in check, plays the knight and checks Carlsen.
Carlsen moved the king out of chess.
Inarkiev stops the clock and claims the win.
Arbiter comes and agrees?
Win Inarkiev.
Time passes, Glazers melt.
Head arbiter says Carlsen made no illegal moves, and offers both players to continue playing from the first chess.
Inarkiev refueses, and Carlsen gets the win.

I think that's fair, but not really familiar with actual rules.

They will always show Magnus.
He's on fire now though, 3 wins in a row. I love how he doesn't play for a draw, like many of the other top players do.
He just plays on the time, and waits for opponents to do a mistake, like in the last one vs Mamedyarov (his name was on the tv screen as i wrote it, or i would never remember ).

No, but apparently they bought the TV rights, and that's why he's always on table 1, which was always streamed as well...before round 12 or so.

To be fair, even if I had a choice of matches, I'd probably watch his much more often than others.

And yeah, just saw that blunder, in comments people are saying blunder of the week. It was almost sure a draw, yet Magnus gets third in a row, and I think just half a point behind the leader! Great day for him so far.

Magnus won it with a round to spare, he's 2 points ahead, and won 8 out of 9 today, amazing day for him.

Blitz is too fast to keep up with the games. Rapid is the best format for TV imo, fast enough to not take the whole day but slow enough to figure out what's going on.

And he won the (sadly unofficial) combined rapid-blitz title for the third year running!

And now the fourth. No-one can keep up with him across five days. He has only twice in eight tournaments finished with fewer points than the winner:

I've just finished watching, and have to say, skipped a lot of the bullet, not only because it's tough to follow, but really not a fan of drubbing. Boy, Nakamura really got thrashed. Bigly! Maybe it would've been a good idea to warm himself up with a nice rapid/blitz tourney before.

Carlsen is amazing!

Interesting day. Giri crushed (and joined) the leader Mamedyarov, Carlsen is winning nine moves after blundering a piece against Jones, Kramnik is having fun with letting pieces hang, and Caruana (2/7!) is in trouble against Hou (1/7).

Entertaining stuff so far. Caruana (6.5) is half a point ahead of Mamedyarov after their 10th round draw today, but the one to watch is Krazy Kramnik, who opened strongly (WDW), completely lost the plot (LDLDLL) and then today sacrificed an exchange against Aronian and eventually won thanks to an horrific blunder by the latter, who is rock bottom on -3. The reigning challenger Karjakin was on -2 early on and looked down and out, but he's now on 5/10 and has Caruana with white in the 12th round. Grischuk (5.5) - Caruana in the last round could also make things interesting. Not to mention Caruana-Kramnik tomorrow.

With two rounds to go it has become a five-horse race. Caruana, Karjakin 7.0, Mamedyarov, Ding, Grischuk 6.5. My money's on Karjakin.
