Who will be United's big signing this summer?

Maybe a tad early but it's looking unlikely that we will do any January business, and it's based directly off Jose's quote.

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-F...lans-for-2018-discussed-by-jose-mourinho.aspx

"My club, two years ago, paid a lot of money for Paul [Pogba]. Last year, they paid a lot of money for Lukaku and I'm sure, next year, they are also going to pay a lot of money for one player."

The liklihood is the player will be a forward and one that is marketable, which narrows the options a bit. I'm hoping for Dybala but I just can't convince myself and I'm not sure we'll spend the kind of money Barca have. I still think Griezmann could happen as his buyout is closer to the price we've paid for our "marquee" signing the last 2 summers, but I don't think he's what we need. My biggest worry is that we'll be the mugs to fund Real's frontline rebuild by taking Bale off their hands. If Spurs finish outside the top 4 Eriksen could be a possibility.

Poll please? @Damien

There will be two big signings. One in attack and another one for midfield. My guesses are:

(1) Dybala or Griezmann for the attacking position
(2) Kroos or Jorginho for the midfield.

I'm hoping our signings are 3 or 4 kids who fill needs that are best in the world for their age around the 19-22 bracket. Will come cheaper and will help us build for the future. I don't care if we aren't immediately dominating. As long as we have a plan for the future that guarantees we are contending in a couple of years time for a decade.

I also think that it’s possible that we spend “big” money on two players in the summer. In my opinion, Griezmann is much more likely than Dybala. The latter may be preferable, but the former is much more attainable. We’ll face much less competition for his signature and the price is fixed. Jorginho should be attainable, but very likely overpriced - who isn’t in today’s transfer market? I don’t see Kroos being gettable at all. I’d love it to happen, though. Out of curiosity, what makes you think that Real would sell him?

More out of my wish to have in our team than anything I have read to suggest that Madrid will sell him, especially to us. :) The only possibility I can think of is Madrid selling him to make couple of big signings. The pressure on them would be immense after Barca's big money acquisitions of Dembele and Coutinho. They already have Kovacic who can take over from Kroos in the midfield.

We have to make a couple of statement signings. With all these big teams going for top players, we have no choice but to make a couple of world class additions to our team. I also think Griezmann is more likely. Don't see Barcelona spending another 100m Euros on a player. Also, Griezmann looks like more a Jose player than Dybala, who though will be an awesome addition if we can make it happen. Getting Griezmann also leaves room to make a big midfield addition. Jorginho for 50m-60m Euros or Kross for 70m-80m Euros to add to Griezmann is quite doable with our burgeoning revenues. Then we can sell a few squaddies to get a RB and a back-up striker. Muenier and Charlie Austin will be my two choices for those positions.

Fair enough. Kroos would be a brilliant addition, I agree. I honestly haven’t seen enough of Jorginho to have a meaningful opinion on him.

Big money signing (£90M+) will either be Dybala or Griezmann AKA a world class SS/RW hybrid.

Not so big money but still expensive signing (£60M-£75M) will be a SMS/Kovacic type AKA a top quality CM to play besides Pogba who at the same time can compliment Matic and be that perfect fit to complete the midfield.

Can see us going after Dybala and Griezmann. Not sure we’ll get either though.

Ideally i'd love to see Pulisic and Weigl as these 2 star signings, but id be surprised if Jose was after either of them, never mind the fact that we'd never get both of them in the same window, if at all. I'd still love to see Draxler at the club.

My only wish is that we really think hard about this as a club and that we aren't stuck in the mindset of needing someone like Bale based on name alone, it would be a waste and a true indicator that the rumors of our transfer strategy and Ed's need for a marquee signing are prevalent, which would be worrying.

Bale :houllier:

...United wouldn’t even pay £60M for his services and that’s assuming RM would even go that low to begin with

Harry Kane

It will be a statement signing, getting the best striker in English football, and he will leave because he knows hes outgrown Spurs now.

Kane would be an amazing signing, but I think it has absolutely zero chance of happening.

Bale could be a valuable asset for United, he would probably be your best player (yes, even better than Pogba) when fit.

His hamstrings have taken a leaf out of Kompany’s book though.

I think it will be Griezmann. Hasn't looked the best for Atletico this season though so that could be a factor. He will probably shine at the WC so hopefully we get the transfer done quickly if we are in for him. Bale would be a huge risk, obviously a top player but spends more than half his time injured and is a player heavily reliant on his physical attributes which will be declining with his injuries and age. Apart from spells in his first season at Madrid, he hasn't reached anywhere near the form he showed at Spurs that prompted Madrid to buy him.

I'd want it to be Dybala, I'd put my money on it being a top CM though.
There is no real top CM available though in terms of world class or elite talent. As José said, we signed Pogba and Lukaku who were top end signings and Mourinho expects the board to invest heavy money in another top target. I don’t think there’s an available CM worth £75M+ so doubt it’ll be a CM being our “big money signing”. Could still potentially be an expensive CM signing in the ~£60M range but definitely not the big money signing that JM has in mind to compete with other top clubs in the world.

As @Hawks2008 mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go in for someone like Weigl, a top DLP to compliment Matic and Pogba, I don't see him going for 60m though. I think someone of that profile will be our 'star signing'.

Yeah, in terms of names, I can only really see Dybala, Griezmann, Özil and Bale. I am still kinda hopeful we go for Saul and use a midfield 3 with him, Pogba and Matic.

The obvious option will be Griezmann. He's got a 'realistic' minimum fee clause and if rumours are true he's been very close to sign with us up until Atletico got that 1 season ban. Unfortunately 1 year is a long time in football and even PSG does sell Neymar then rest assured they will be all over him. Which leads us to Real. They still consider themselves as the galacticos but their recent transfer dealings hasn't really suggest that. After losing up on DDG, Mbappe and Pogba they need to bounce back with a hollywood signing and Neymar would be perfect for that. However, the Brazilian will cost them big, money that they probably don't have. Would that lead to a jumble sale? Bale and Kovacic would be the obvious sellouts. There again, those players won't raise enough money for Neymar so maybe Asensio or Isco might end up being sold.

In my opinion United can't afford spending huge money on 1 player as we need 6 players (lb, rb, Carrick, replacement, Fellaini replacement, AMR and AMC) and thanks to idiotic decision of closing the summer transfer market early we can't afford ending up into a deadlock. So if things don't go according to script then I can see United panicking, get Ozil or Bale on free/cheap and portray him as a big signing.

Personally, I am not confident that Woody wil step up to the plate any time soon and add to the team. Would love to be proved wrong, and although he has signed a couple of big names, always seems reluctant to pay up for the final piece in the puzzle under Jose.

If there is no further improvement to the squad, finishing second may prove to be a struggle particularly if those still in contention follow through and sign some players. Let's hope Woody and the board understand the need to improve, and in the current climate it needs to be done adding good players and spending some good amounts.

If only one marquee then Kane please. Give Levy what he wants, just make it happen, Ed!
This isn't happening lol, people need to stop with this. We bought Lukaku and even if Kane was available, all the top teams in Europe would be in for him, Levy would sell outside of England, as he always does with his star players.
