Bruce Grobbelaar was Liverpool's last title winning goalie and whilst he achieved a lot he was never the best keeper in the game during his time but he was an integral part of their title winning sides.

Since then the scousers have failed to win a title and for the most part have never really had a top class keeper with perhaps Pepe Reina being the best.

Here is a list of keepers since they won the title in 1990.

David James
Sander Westerveld
Jerzy Dudek
Pepe Reina
Diego Cavelieri
Brad Friedel
Chris Kirkland
Simon Mignolet
Loris Karius

A who's who in mediocrity with Reina the best of the bunch. Its boggles the mind that they constantly neglect the keeper position.

Such an awful list of goalkeepers but the current situation is unbelievable. I don't know a single person who rates Mignolet as above average and that Karius lad doesn't look capable of keeping goal for a Championship side.

Everyone forgets how good Dudek was in 01/02. He fell apart after that though, with a one off worldie performance in Istanbul.

Why is Cavelieri included in this when he rarely if ever had a run of games for us? You might as well throw Arphexad in the mix, and Doni. What about Carson too, he played more than Cavelieri ever did. Brad Jones replaced Mignolet temporarily in 14/15.

David James wasn't so bad, his problem was consistency - making blinding saves one minute, and dropping clangers the next.

He was much better as an older 'keeper in his Portsmouth days. Just a shame his time at the World Cup was ruined by a shambolic defence in front of him - much to Germany's delight.

Likeable bloke too.

I just remembered that old Southampton (shock) keeper we had to loan in 03/04 (I think) when we had a keeper injury crisis. I think his name was Paul Jones? There was another one called Patrice Luzi who had to play part of a game at Chelsea as well when Dudek got injured.

I recall Erik “the Viking” Thorstvedt claimed Mignolet to be the best goalie in the PL the season before he moved to Liverpool.

He was pretty good as well. In fact, they bought some promising players and managed to feck them all up. Impressive, most impressive!

Got another one - Pegguy Arphexad. Rumored to be a pornstar at the time, managed to get 4(?) appearances and 6 trophies with Liverpool.

That makes for mediocre reading. All of the top teams in the league can claim to have had some of the best goalkeepers playing for them over the last 20 years. Utd: Schmeichel, VdS, DDG. Arsenal: Seaman and Lehmann. Chelsea: Cech and Courtois. Even prime Hart would top Liverpool's list for City. The current debate around Liverpool's defensive frailties clearly goes back beyond Klopp, and probably the main reason they've not won a league since before the dawn of civilisation (/the premier league).

Make a PL era Liverpool allstar squad and it's quite mediocre overall especially if you don't include players which are more affiliated with other clubs (Suarez, Masch...)

Reina easily the best in that list.

I never understood why Rodgers let him go in 2013. He was only 31 at that point and he plays still at a very good level for Napoli.

Should have kept Brad Friedel.
Friedel wasn't that great for them, they rotated him and James and David James was the more solid of the two.

He only became a great premier league keeper when he turned up at Blackburn.

He out performed his XP GA significantly whilst at Sunderland but I don't think he's had a single season at Liverpool where he's even played to par.
It probably wasn't the worst shout back then it's just goalies at lower clubs have more protection and less threatening shots with lots of bodies around them to clean up every second ball. It's why Pope/Heaton significantly outperform that metric for Burnely every season.
Whereas DDG is a significant outlier on it too just proving he's far far better than any keeper in this league even amongst his top 6 rivals.

We’ve had our fair share of shite too during the transitional period between the greats. Taibi, Foster, Carrol, Bosnich, Howard. But at least two of those went in to have excellent careers at lower pressure clubs.

The thing that strikes me, when looking at our main list: Schmeichel, Barthez, Van der Saar, and De Gea, is not just how good the first choice was, but how good our understudies have been. Van der Gouw, Kuszcak, Romero etc. All three of our current gks would start for Liverpool. That’s how fecking shite their situation is.

If Pepe Reina is the best they’ve had since Grobelaar - who incidentally was as dodgy as they come - then that just shows how poor their recruitment has been in that department. Because Reina is a bang average goalkeeper. Even in his prime.

I am surprised to find Barthez listed with Schmeichel, Van Der Sar, and David De Gea. Barthez had a great first season, but he was otherwise eccentric.

I agree with you about Kuszcak and Romero. I don't really remember Raimond Van Der Gouw. I was too young.

I’m not rating him on that level at all. Personal thought he was a bit naff for us, but he doesn’t deserve to be in the shite list, so I just listed him with the other key starters.

That's just not true. In his prime he was a very good goal keeper.

He was , yes. He always seemed to be injured as he had a freak accident at home I think. He also recently came out recently about his battle with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Safe to say we can exclude Ronaldo from any United XI then?

Week in week out Sergio Romero wouldn't be as good as the one who plays the odd cup match imo.

Reina was to me the first sweeper keeper that played in the premier league unless I've missed out someone obvious before.

It allowed Benitez to park his defence close to the halfway line and when you think that defence consisted of Finnan, Carragher Hyypia/Agger, Riise that was no mean feat as none of them were that quick yet they knew anything over the top and Reina would be quickly outside his box.
