Actually Carrick has always gotten easily pressed out. I'm not sure when the narrative started that he could dominate games against a press. Under pressure, Carrick was sending the ball to VDS or a defender 9 out of 10 times

I think he was a good player but a great beneficiary of the Fergie era where teams camped in their box and rarely committed to pressing our midfielders. When they did, he would disappear. Think the Bilbao tie was one of such but I won't pass this opinion off as a fact
If somehow we could transfer Carrick's brain into Scott McTominay, this could work. Maybe something like from the movie "Get Out"
You need to watch some games with him in his prime as this is wrong on all levels..
I mean we still have Valenica, Young, Smalling and Jones still in the squad so why not throw Carrick back in there. Worked for Fergie why wouldn't it work for Jose, seemed to have gone well when he came on Sunday.

Rooney is the answer. Him and Pogba floating around in front of Matic, spraying raking balls out the Valencia, then jogging over to Valencia to receive the guaranteed post-shuffle pass backwards from him.

Definitely. And I still don't think we've replaced him, no matter how hard we've tried.
I remember he was basically a one man midfield in SAFs last season, he was absolutely immense.
I think he'd have played a huge part this season had it not been for the heart issues. Brought much needed stability last season and could have done the same this season. Shame really. Been another disastrous season for our midfielders in terms of injuries.
We were the same, he got some serious stick form some of our supporters cause they “didn’t know what he did”, then we signed Modric and again the same fans asked “what exactly does he do”. True sign of a world class player is when they find time on the ball that others don’t, and makes everything look easy. We don’t have a replacement right now, maybe Winks, but he’s still very raw and not really in the exact same mould.
Dembele isn't doing a bad job for you to be fair.
Peak Carrick and Modric would be a pretty amazing midfield two, though.
Was probably our best midfielder in the short time he was on the pitch though which says a lot.
Peak Carrick was world class and one of the best to have played in midfield for us. No surprise that in our sides most successful period he was the only consistent selection in the midfield.
Indeed it would be glorious. Dembele carries the ball probably as good as any player I’ve seen, strong and glides past players but doesn’t have the same range of passing or vision to make a game tick, and sadly never 100% fit. He needs a player like Eriksen on the pitch with him to shine.
Would be hard to choose 1 between Modric and Carrick, a real head scratcher, my favourite type of player.
If we're going to play a 4231, I'd like to see a double pivot of Carrick and/or Matic/McTominay.

I love Carrick but peak Modric was the best midfielder in the world so it'd have to be him.

Yeah your probably right, I’d happily take Modric back even now, for a season or 2 but he deserves to retire at Madrid if they let him.

Time has catched up with him I'm afraid. It happens to even the best of them. If he was fit and playing he'd still be one of the first names on my teamsheet but bringing him in now would add more problems than it would solve. He can do a job in the last 20/25 of PL games if we're leading definitely because we've got a lot of important fixtures and Matic will need some rest here and there but starting games no.
I hope Jose can find an adequate replacement for him when he leaves in the summer, we will really miss him when he goes. Players like him are very far and few between.

Herrera should be the one sitting as he's better than Matic at covering ground and winning the ball (plus he's capable of playing passes between the lines and decent under pressure), Matic should be the box to box because he's decent in the attacking 3rd and won't have to worry about covering the whole of the midfield which he's obviously not capable of doing, then you can have Pogba whose liability in defence won't be as exposed and will have more freedom attack wise.
The problem is whenever we've tried those 3 together Matic and Herrera have been in the opposite positions which I don't think is beneficial to each players qualities.
