Who should be England's #1 Goalkeeper in the World Cup?

Jack Butland has conceded 46 in 26 games with 5 clean sheets.
Nick Pope has conceded 22 in 26 games with 10 clean sheets.
Jordan Pickford has conceded 49 in 29 games with 6 clean sheets.
Joe Hart has conceded 30 in 14 games with 3 clean sheets.

Hart and Butland are the more tournament experienced keepers.

Frasier Forster has been second fiddle for the majority of the season and Tom Heaton has been injured for the majority of the season.

So who would you select as our best option in between the sticks?

They're pretty fecked in any case.

For me you'd either take Pickford with a view to the future (with his supposed potential) or you just bank on Joe Hart's experience, while hoping nobody shoots to his left side.

I don't rate any of them.

They're all bang average but I'd start Hart based on his experience

I say again though they're all bang average and like they said on Sky last night England have the potential to have an XI made up of a lot of players who potentially will have seen very little football during the last few months of the season

-------------Hart-------------
Walker--Stones--Cahill--Rose
-------------Dier-------------
----Lallana------Henderson----
Sterling-----Kane-----Alli

Or some such formation

It'll be Joe Hart despite him sitting on West Ham's bench

None of them are actually inspiring choices though

How does experience make a terrible 'keeper like Hart more suitable than a more talented 'keeper? Genuine question because I can't figure it out.

Underwhelming options but Butland looks the only possible option.

I keep asking myself the same thing! I really don't get the logic. He's tried, tested and failed. Every keeper (or player for that matter) needs to have their first tournament at some point.

You wouldn't refuse to start Harry Kane and pick Crouch instead because of tournament experience.

Both Pope and Heaton should go. Hart is way past it but he might be useful as the 3rd keeper. I don't know how he is in a group, maybe a very positive influence so he could be good to have given his experience. Pickford just isn't very good. Butland is probably in the top 3.

England dont have the Harry Kane of goalkeepers though so your argument is stupid

Pope or Butland.

Hart has experience, but is dogshit. All the experience isnt worth a penny if you arent good enough.

I've been impressed with Pickford. Sadly plays behind a poor defence but has great shot stopping ability. Hart should be the last one on the list to be selected.

Pickford and Hart are awful. Based on this season I'd have Pope starting, can't do any worse than the others.

Nick Pope.

Pickford is really bad. And Butland hasn't been good since coming back from the injury last season.

But doubt Southgate would go with Pope. In fact, I won't be surprised if he goes with Joe Hart.

Joe Hart can't be in goal. Be hilarious if he is though.

I think this really is a case of Southgate picking three from Butland, Heaton, Hart and Pickford (might be a couple of others under consideration) for the squad then picking his No 1 from there and then hoping for the best.
Hart has been found out as an imposter in the last couple of years but if Southgate goes with him I wouldn't be surprised. Surely not though, he is second choice at West Ham.

I'm sorry but who is Nick Pope?
Never even heard of him
I see Heaton doing punditry a lot, is he out for the season or something

Actually wait, is Pope his replacement in the Burnley team?

Surprised at the shouts for Hart. Lack of credible alternatives or not, he's become a serial failure for England. Culpable in their early exits from both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.

It'll be interesting to see whether Southgate repeats the mistakes of Hodgson, Capello, Eriksson and Robson in selecting keepers well past their sell-by date.

Hart shouldn't even make the squad. He had a horror show last tournament, and has been shite for years.

Butland #1 and Pickford as back up.

I don't think it really matters other than Hart's credibility has gone. Southgate needs to choose one, play him in the friendlies, pray he does ok and then stick with him. Have to say though that I see nothing about Pickford that makes me think he is the answer. Probably Butland. How depressing is this thread?

Good question and I have no idea tbh.

Pickford, everytime I've seen him play has not impressed me. He's quite short and he always seems to be scrambling for shots that are either side of him.

Butland I've not seen much so can't comment.

Surprised I'm the only one advocating to give Nick Pope a shot.
Yeah, after De Gea, Ederson and Lloris. Not sure if there's any goalkeeper in the league that's had a better season. But I suspect many people attach his form to Dyche's system that has made defensive players like Heaton, Keane (in the past), Mee look really good.

I'm with you on that one mate.. Heaton would have been my pick had he not been injured all season, but Nick Pope is turning out to be just as good if not better. Can't believe people are putting the likes of Hart and Butland ahead of him, they're both dogshit.

We need his experience.

Heaton has been injured for almost all of the season and by the looks of things is out for the rest of it. Pope has filled in for him and has been one of Burnley's key performers for Dyche. As seen in OP he has a really good record. He's only 25, pretty young for a goalkeeper and actually looks a talent.
