Talked a lot of sense today, and seemed to be the only pundit in the studio to do so.

Sourness saying we ''got away with it" but Carragher is having none of it. Fair play to him, he's got it spot on.

Can't fault him today, even seemed to have a better sense of the game than Neville.

Yes because unlike Souness and the majority of Liverpool fans, Carragher has some pride and standards and realises making excuses every year won’t help

I interpret 'getting away with it' as not leaving much margin for error - which in fairness we didn't. Not, 'we were terrible and didn't deserve to win.'

I've been banging the drum on Carragher for ages, much prefer him to Neville.

I interpret it as Sourness meant it. We were lucky. Which we weren't.

Probably an easy one for Carragher to speak with authority on, given Benitez built his successes at Liverpool on players like Carragher. He would know how a pragmatic manager thinks, plans for and views games like this. That said, it's good to see he's not sitting their quiet while Souness goes off on one.

Think Carragher certainly one of the more objective pundits in the game. Then again he thinks Lampard and Gerrard were better than Scholes so he's not perfect.

He meant it as we were fortunate to get 3 points from the game. He said it in several different ways.

Thought he was balanced today even if it was through gritted teeth but Souness, he's an absolute joke....

Fair enough, but thought he was correct re our failure to keep the ball better in the second half - doing so would've alleviated the defensive pressure we put ourselves under. Even Mourinho said in his post-match that the second half wasn't in the plan, but rather dictated to by Liverpool.

Mourinho himself said the same thing. Liverpool may have controlled possession but only got back into the game because of a bizarre own goal. Even then they couldn't dig out any real chances. Hard to say the controlled the game when they were behind and couldn't get close to changing that.

I don't think we controlled the game to the extent Mourinho implied, but I'd expect him to say that. If we were in 'complete control' I dare say we wouldn't have conceded so many corners, thus bringing about more pressure.

I've always liked Carragher as a pundit. He doesn't hide the fact that he's Liverpool through and through but when it comes to analyzing games he's always balanced with his views. He showed up that bitter prick Souness today.

You say this as if.....well yeah, everyones a fan of Carragher right?

Irritating when Liverpool win as I think his praise is over the top but he is able to criticize and talk sense when he is obviously fuming at the result when the lose without resorting to superlatives like he does when they win.

I haven’t seen any sky coverage from today but will give it a watch later on.

As for Neville he does my head in

I wouldn't say plenty, but rather just enough.

The margin of error stuff is more to do with striking a balance between defence and attack - we didn't do that in the second half and that can be dangerous.

Sh*t happens in football, on another day they win a penalty or enjoy a ricochet at a corner - but if you enjoy more of the ball and strike a balance (like we did in the 1st half), it stands to reason that the risk of anything like that happening is reduced - if only marginally. But it's margins in football that make all the difference - just ask City, they've been on the right side of them for most of the season.

Mourinho would have wanted us to play like we did in the first half, in the second. That's for sure. As it is, Liverpool pinned us back and the plan changed.

Souness was talking utter shite. The possession point meant nothing considering it was probably even in the first but with us playing better, then coming out and playing more defensively in the second but not parking the bus.

Fair play to Jamie for setting him straight multiple times.

To be fair, Souness was right re possession in the second half - if we'd retained the ball better, we wouldn't have found ourselves defending our goal for so much of the second half.

Carragher was good though re the dark arts stuff. Every great team needs it.

He’s a great pundit. He’s obviously worked hard to tone down that shambolic accent as well.

I enjoyed Sheringham's "clutching at straws" comment when they tried to imply Rashford should have been sent off at half time. Shot it down as the nonsense it was before they had a chance to turn it into a thing.

Carragher's been the best one on Sky for a while now.

I wanted us to carry on playing the same as the first. Think you have just as much chance of keeping a lead that way as you do playing more defensive. But we played the way Jose wanted very well and still outplayed them, just in a different way, imo.

I don’t think it was a park bus job either. We still played plenty of football.
We could’ve controlled the ball better at times but still controlled the game all the way through, rather than just being on the back foot because we’re struggling.
I was very happy with the performance.

I was frustrated in the second half because I thought we were putting ourselves under needless pressure. And thankfully Mourinho admitted that our second half performance wasn't planned, but rather determined by Liverpool's improvement in the second half.

In the future however, we'll have to strike a greater balance between attack and defence, even when we're leading, because football isn't linear - sh*t happens and if you sit too deep, invite pressure, don't attack and eventually concede, it can be far harder to switch back into gear in an attacking sense.

I agree that I’d rather we didnt go more defensive. I thought it would’ve been Jose’s instruction. Nonetheless we looked so focussed I was pretty happy with it, apart from feeling sick in the last 5 mins. Of course things can still happen which is why it’s not always good.

Must admit, as much as I hated him as a player (and trust me, that time he clattered Nani I would of happily punched the guy myself), he is a very good pundit. Speaks sense and isn't afraid to speak the truth even if it is against Liverpool. Sky struck gold with the Carra and Neville combo.

On a side note, I still felt dirty buying a beer in his Sports bar in New York :D

In this instance, it didn't appear to be. He just accepted that Liverpool responded well in the second half. Mourinho was desperate to get the team up the field and was imploring some players to play the simple pass and keep possession.

Yeah that was great.

He seemed to be directing it towards the presenter too, seeing as though she's the daughter of Dalglish.

Neville and Carra are both excellent pundits. Its just fans want ex players to laud their own side with superfluous praise all the time. I've been seen Scholes slagged off on here for sticking the boot in.
At the end of the day their also expected to create narratives for Sky and they do that through hyperbole. It only becomes a thing if people take it overly serious.
It's a part of the game i guess.

As a Liverpool fan, are you not embarrassed by how bitter Souness comes across?

Carragher is turning out to be a very good pundit. He is also fairly new compared to people like Souness and I wonder why Sky keeps hiring idiots like Souness?

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
I've said for a while that I think Jamie Carragher is my fave pundit for a long time - possibly ever... (I'm mid 30s).

Sounds a bit extreme, but I just really like his style, and how he can mix insight, humour, being openly biased (to Liverpool, of all teams) and keep shows and topics moving nicely.

I haven't seen his post-match talk from today (hoping to watch it in a minute), but I really, really rate him.

Find him to be a likeable geezer as well (and I started from the stance of disliking him as an ex-Liverpool player).
