Deadwood. Probably the best portrayal of how the wild west really was.

Love the classics though.

Watch something with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.
Cheers. I haven't seen The Trinity trilogy so googled. Is it spoof? If so not interested. A mans horse is no laughing matter and neither is anyone's mule.
I also haven't seen the last three listed there so thanks for the heads up
Spaghetti westerns. They're great.

The modern remake of 3-10 to Yuma is garbage. The 1957 original is a much better movie. As far as westerns worth watching, I'd go with

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
High Noon (1952)
Warlock (1959)
Shane (1953)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)
Unforgiven (1992)
3-10 to Yuma (1957)
Dances with Wolves (1990)
Tombstone (1993)
The Gunfighter (1950)
Little Big Man (1970)
Young Guns (1988)
Appaloosa (2008)
True Grit (2010)

Welcome to the next chapter in my fight against my own ignorance of all things film.

I don't think I've ever seen a proper Western before. Shameful, I know, so how should I go about rectifying this? Should I jump straight in and watch what people regard as the classics? Or are there particular ones I should see first to ease me in?

Guide me, Entertainmentards.
Want to watch the best off the bat then pop in TGTBATU and then OUATITW....two best imo and then check out the rest of Clint's westerns...John Wayne has some good ones....more recently as have otherscsaid, Unforgiven and 310 to Yuma.

I'd forgotten about Tombstone. Val Kilmer is fecking great in that and it's an excellent cast throughout.

I was just coming in here to say Tombstone. One of my favourites.

The original Jango is worth a watch. About a mysterious stranger that wanders into a crime ridden town pulling a coffin behind him. Definately worth a watch for the end alone!

Jango il bastardo is great too. Was supposedly the inspiration for Eastwoods high planes drifter too.

I liked Red Sun when I saw it on telly 30 odd years ago. Haven't seen it since though so it might be crap now.

After all that I've still barely seen any. I watched Hud recently, which only qualifies as a Western by virtue of having more cattle than people in it.

I did read a load of Western novels though.

If anyone wants to see the most psychedelic Western ever made I highly recommend El Topo (1970)

Wiki's description while accurate cannot convey the weirdness

"El Topo (English: "The Mole") is a 1970 Mexican Acid Western film written, scored, directed by and starring Alejandro Jodorowsky. Characterized by its bizarre characters and occurrences, use of maimed and dwarf performers, and heavy doses of Christian symbolism and Eastern philosophy, the film is about the eponymous character – a violent, black-clad gunfighter – and his quest for enlightenment."

@R.N7 will be all over that.

Slow West was good.

I think of Hell or high water and no country for old men as modern westerns. Both good films too.

How did i miss this thread before?!!

I am a westerns freak, or rather Spaghetti westerns freak. My mobile tune is western, spend my piano lessons pracitcing Ennio's themes, my fb header is western, my twitter avi is western, me dream vacation is to visit Tabernas desert where most spaghetti westerns were shot, my fav. actor is Volonte for his roles in the westerns.... Basically, for me, Spaghetti westerns > Earth, life and the universe

Ok, enough of this lame shit. Here is a list:

- The dollars triology (some consider "for a few dollars more" better than "the good, the bad and the ugly")
- Once upon a time in the west
- Duck, you sucker ( fistful of dynamite)
- The Great Silence
- The big gundown
- Django ( 1967 version)
- My name is nobody
- Face to Face
- A bullet for the general
- The mercenary

This should suffice for now.

Three Westerns coming out have me very excited. It's been a pretty great year for old Westerns making their debut on Blu Ray in the UK, now we have three new ones coming out in Theatres with really positive reviews.
