John O’Shea is expected to announce the end of his playing career within the next five weeks.

After collecting 14 leading honours in his 19-year-career, the 36-year-old Sunderland and Ireland defender will leave the sport as one of the most decorated players in Irish football history, having accumulated a medal collection that is surpassed by only four compatriots: Denis Irwin, Roy Keane, Steve Heighway and Ronnie Whelan.

O’Shea had hoped to bow out after the World Cup finals in Russia, but Ireland’s failure to see off Denmark in last November’s play-off ended that particular plan.
I imagine he'll get a bit of hate here, a bit of "should have retired ages ago" etc, but I still really like him. A massive player for Ireland too even when he wasn't performing at club level.

Probs for the best. His legs have really gone, and I'm not sure he'd be up to playing league one next year for Sunderland.

Not sure why he'd get hate on here. Perhaps people can debate his quality but it'd be ridiculous to hate a man who played nearly 400 games for United and never caused us any grief.

Fair play to him, loyal servant to club and country and while he was never a world beater he had a few career highlights that most United fans (and some players) could only dream of

I don't think anyone who scored an injury time winner against Liverpool, nutmegged Figo and chipped a goal into the top corner at Highbury with his wrong foot to complete a rout is going to get much hate here

How could anybody hate him? he was a great servant to the club, has never bad mouthed us since he left and always gave it 100% his best.

No he wasn't the best player in the squad, but you could always trust him. 1 of those players that Fergie just got every drop of talent/work out of.

He's had some excellent moments down the years too looking back at those highlights.

Can't believe I have just wasted 2 minutes of my life watching John O'Shea's goal keeping highlights, having said that I could watch the Arsenal goal and Liverpool last minute winner all day long. Cult hero. When Jono goes marching down the wing.......

Great servant to United and to the my national team. Class player and pretty underrated as I feel in his prime, he was quite the player.

Not to mention his nutmeg on Figo is criminal.

All this while being one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.

When Jonny goes marching down the wing...♪, ♩

Love him, don't know how any United fan can say otherwise.

Fs, he nutmegged Figo.

Certainly not from me. I agree wit hthe poster above that it's the right decision as he isn't fit for the top level any more, but what a player and servant he was for us. He gave everything to United and United gave everything to him.

That goal against Arsenal was one of my favourite moments. Seemed to basically be the hammer blow to that rivalry even though we lost the Cup final a couple of months later.

He had a fantastic break out season.

And then played in midfield with Giggs in 2005-06.

Absolute hero, despite disappointing in terms of what his first season pushed expectations to

I remember reading Ronaldo's autobiography recently where he said that John O'Shea was the best player he's trained and played with during his time at Manchester United.

Disclaimer: I've completely made that up.

John Oshea is a role model. For me – and I really mean this – he's the best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20 years. Xavi

My toughest opponent? Oshea of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. John is undoubtedly the greatest utility player of his generation. Zidane

Good enough to play for Brazil. I love to watch Oshea, to see him pass, the boy with the black hair and the red shirt. Socrates

Personally, I thought he was (and is) a terrible footballer.

One of those players who was praised for being 'versatile' - a polite of saying he's not very good in any one position.

He used to make me so nervous when he was on the ball. His ability to make a 5 yard pass seem difficult is bettered only by Smalling.

Absolutely fantastic squad player too, adaptable can-do attitude. A lot of our fans don’t appreciate squad players enough!

Exactly! This is also why I love Ashley Young. Some players just work extremely hard to make up for some stuff, and at times they play better than who they replaced because of this.

O'Shea's goal vs Arsenal was just

Terrible footballers don’t have very long and very successful careers.
Great appreciation you got going there!

It'll remain a mystery to me how O'Shea eeked out a career at United for so long.

Anyone who was pleased to see John O'Shea in the lineup was/is lying to themselves.

You don’t win leagues without quality squad players like O’Shea.
I never got nervous to see him in the lineup as he never really let us down
