Talking points ahead of the press conference
  • Update on Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez’s injuries
  • Message for Sir Alex Ferguson following his emergency surgery
  • Will Paul Pogba be leaving the club in the summer?
  • Plan for the final two games of the season
  • Reaction from the players following the Brighton defeat - how will they bounce back?
How will United bounce back?

Mourinho could make quite a few changes to his starting XI after the shambles against Brighton.

The United boss could give updates on team news very soon.

Mourinho gives injury update

In terms of injuries, is Lukaku and Fellaini the two players that are not available for tomorrow and apart from that Jones is back, Sanchez is back and no more problems.

Mourinho has been asked about Sir Alex Ferguson
Have you been or touch or managed to see him?:

It’s private. His family ask for privacy and that’s what I’m going to respect.

More from Mourinho on Sir Alex Ferguson
‘Are you happy he will make a swift recovery?’

They are positive, they are very, very positive.

We are confident.

Mood at Old Trafford
Will the mood be affected by the Sir Alex Ferguson news?

No, I can only think that if there is any relation it is a positive relation.

How the players have responded after Brighton defeat
They all work well, even in weeks that hand in bad performances or bad results, I never have anything negative to say about the professionalism of my players during the season, this week was not different.

Mourinho on Carrick
He will start the last match, OT, last match of the PL, our captain in front of our fans, he will start the match against Watford.

Mourinho on Carrick's impact and future at the club
The most important quality is to be a man, MAN, capitals, a proper man and football is not full of them and not just football, society is not full of them, so when you find one of them you have to value and you have to keep and in this case is not about me, is about the club, the club had on him great many years playing football and now when his body says is enough the club and myself will want to keep the man, of course he has qualities that we believe can make him a good coach and there are many ways to do the bridge between player and coaching staff, there are many ways to do it, some guys prefer to have a couple of years to study or go to youth football.

In this case we decided the bridge could be that bridge, to change shirts and dressing rooms and offices and to stop being a player and become an assistant.

I give my assistants very good conditions for their evolution and I think Michael can be very positive for us.

Very complimentary words. Anyone know if he has got any coaching badges already? Imagine Carrick ends up with Utd job ahead of the class of 92! (Know this is miles off but just imagine)

I have no idea what I'm basing it on, but I think Carrick would end up being a better candidate than all of them, except maybe Nicky. Carrick seems to have the perfect temperament.

Providing he proves himself at some level, I think that could work.
Put it this way, I am more positive about Carrick, than I am about Giggs.
Perhaps he could manage our youth team at some point. That could be a way for him to get into management.

Meaning no offense to class o 92, but Carrick also comes across as a bit, erm, brighter. (Except Butt who also seems solid)

I would 100% back this as an appointment in the long term. Carrick is a man of great integrity and class, has a fantastic footballing brain and knows exactly what this club is about. Whether he's got that fire is another question but I hope we consider him as Jose's successor in a couple of year as in my opinion, Giggs or anyone else from the co92 was never right for the job.

Similar route to Zidane I think?

David Moyes has been asked about United
I could only ever say good things about Manchester United. I respect the club so much. It’s such a good football club. I think we would rather not be playing them after they’ve suffered a defeat, but we will do everything we can to win and play well.”

"I wish they gave me more time." bite, bite.

Jose Mourinho has given us an update on injuries and the strength of his squad for Manchester United's penultimate Premier League match against West Ham United.

The Reds will take on David Moyes's Hammers at the London Stadium on Thursday evening, in a match rearranged from mid-March when Mourinho's men were otherwise engaged in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals.

Jose confirmed that Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku are injured and will not be available, adding that the latter will also miss the Reds’ final Premier League game of the season against Watford on Sunday, on his 25th birthday. However, the manager is hopeful his top goalscorer will be fit for the Emirates FA Cup final against his former club Chelsea on 19 May.

Lukaku's Belgian compatriot Fellaini started last week’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion but has a muscular problem and won’t be involved against the Hammers. But, in more positive news, Mourinho also said that Phil Jones and Alexis Sanchez will return, after the pair missed the defeat at the Amex Stadium through injury.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game at the London Stadium, the boss said: “In terms of injuries, it’s Lukaku and Fellaini. They are the two players who are not available for tomorrow [Thursday]. [Phil] Jones is back, Sanchez is back and there are no more problems.”

He went on: “Lukaku will not play in the last league game of the season. Fellaini might – it is a muscular problem. We will wait and see.”

The boss also confirmed that captain Michael Carrick will start against Watford, for what will be his Old Trafford finale before retiring at the end of the season.

“He [Carrick] will start the last match at Old Trafford, the last match of the Premier League,” he said. “Our captain, in front of our fans, he will start the match against Watford.”

HOW ARE WEST HAM SHAPING UP?

The Hammers, managed by former United boss David Moyes, currently have a lengthy injury list, with a number of players sidelined.

Former Reds striker Javier Hernandez (knee), Michail Antonio and James Collins (both hamstring), Winston Reid and Pedro Obiang (both knee-ligament damage) and Sam Byram (ankle) are all absent.

On-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart (illness) and the club’s Player of the Year Marko Arnautovic (knock) could return but are rated as doubtful.

His comments about wanting Young to make 50 appearances for us next season are pretty worrying.

Last week Jose got slaughtered for being too negative about the squad. He bigs up Young and now people are worried. The guy should just sit silently in front of the cameras for 10 minutes and leave.

You take Jose's comments too seriously. His comments in the same season won't be consistent. Leave alone a comment in this season becoming true the next season.

I can't believe Fellaini is injured again. He should never get the new contract, never.

Didn't he go on a bizarre "I don't know" rant in a post match interview in his disaster season at Chelsea.

It's the plan B thing.

That said, fecker gets used way too often as a plan A and that's why I hope China are making him an offer he can't refuse.
That would put an end to any hopes he would have of a Belgium NT recall though, no? Out of curiosity, does anybody know if he is in consideration for the squad as it stands anyway?

The Chelsea disaster had a lot of low points for Jose. Don't think you can pick out just one.
