Few of you might have seen this. Admittedly haven't listened to a lot of the band until now but seems to have been a very well-liked guy who had a lot of his own personal problems and unfortunately succumbed to them in the end. Was apparently great with fans etc, a lot of sadness over Scotland regarding this one.

Grim. Saw he was missing yesterday and it sounded like his family were fearing the worst.

Very sad to hear this. I love the band and Scott Hutchison came across to me as an approachable, intelligent and funny guy, the type you could've had a pint with. Depression is a bitch.

Two of my favorite songs of theirs. Swim until you can't see land and Acts of man

Big fan, saw them live just a couple of months ago. As evident in a lot of their songs, he always seemed to be wrestling with his demons. There's even one that talks about suicide and floating away down a river.

It's sad that his music helped a lot of people deal with their depression but it got the better of him.

Absolutely heartbroken by this news today. He had been struggling for years but always seemed to put on a brave face. Saw them a few weeks ago in Manchester and they put on an incredible show. Such an incredible man with unbelievable talent. Everyone from fans to artists throughout the Scottish music scene are truly devastated by this news. My brother and I are heading to South Queensferry tonight to lay some flowers and pay our respects.

Absolutely awful news. Even more heartbreaking that these men seem to talk about suicide and depression so openly in their music and then eventually succumb to it. :(

So that's Dale Winton, Avicii, Verne Troyer and this lad within the space of a few weeks? Highlights the suicide problem among the male population.
They weren't suicides were they?

This is really sad news though. The Midnight Organ Flight is a really good album.

Both Verne and Dale had been battling with depression for years and sadly did commit suicide.

I’m not a fan of Corrie but I’m impressed with the Shayne Ward suicide plot. I hope it brings a very misunderstood disease into the light and saves some lives.

The Midnight Organ Fight is still one of my favourite albums.
I listened to it again yesterday after hearing the news. Some of the lyrics has gotten a bit darker now, especially those of Floating in the Forth.

Sad news indeed.

I met Scott a few times in different scenarios and him and the band were always lovely.

There was one time he appeared out of the blue at a small festival a good few years ago. He'd walked there from somewhere nearby and played a few tunes. Chatting to him after, I remember thinking, feckin hell is this guy ok? I think a friend of mine who had had depression issues in the past hung out with him for a while that night.

Met them again a few years later and he seemed in much better form. They were a great band live. Upset to hear this news and the way he went.

I'd been keeping track of this when he disappeared, very sad news R.I.P. Until yesterday I hadn't heard any songs apart from The Woodpile which is a very good song. I listened to a few other songs on Spotify, some of the lyrics are very raw. They're certainly not your average indie band, in fact you could argue why they're labelled as indie.

Very sad news, this. Midnight Organ Fight was one of those rare albums that just finds you when you need it most. Modern Leper and Heads Roll Off still give me goosebumps every time.

What do you think they should be labeled as or more pertinently what do you think indie (rock) sounds like?

I don't like to use the term 'Emo' but they could almost be in that bracket given the lyrics.

You wouldn't be wrong many of their songs are straight up emo but indie covers so much these days.

I'd definitely call them indie rock. Maybe with a bit of folk or alternative thrown in there. Wouldn't call them emo, especially with the more recent albums.

Emo is a bit more than just lyrical content, otherwise almost anything could be emo. Stylistically, I wouldn't say FR are close to Emo, which itself was an offshoot of hardcore punk in the 80s, stuff like Rites of Spring, Drive Like Jehu etc. Then in the last decade or so it seemed to be incorrectly applied to weird (bad) metal bands who wear eyeliner and scream about girls. It has become a bit of a joke term and probably shouldn't really be used for anything now. The original wave of Emo bands tended to hate the term anyway. It's always been a little bit derogatory, I feel. I'd say indie rock is suitable, and they do have a fair bit of folk in there too, though indie is such a large umbrella term, which has also been bastardized from its original meaning.

The news is incredibly sad. I didn't know him, but I'm friends with a couple of people who did and it has hit them hard. When someone passes, it's natural to hear the whole "no one had a bad word to say about him/her" but I do know that was remarkably true about Scott well before this happened from those I know who knew him. It's tragic that someone, anyone, can be in such a position mentally to make that decision.

I quite like Frightened Rabbit, but I was never massively into them bar a handful of songs, though I really like Scott and Grant's new side project, Mastersystem. They just released their first album a couple of months back. I only heard it for the first time recently, it's a great straight-up rocker, early Idlewild-ish, one of my favourite LPs of the year so far. It's just so simple and driving, everything sounds big, it's a great listen, I'd recommend it especially if you like Scott's music. It's a shame we won't get to hear Scott make any more music. He was very talented. A massive shame.

On the back of this I'll give it a listen.

On a side note I remember quite liking his solo project, Owl John, back when he released that.

Gutted. Scott and his brother are from the next town over in the Borders. Our mothers are friends. I remember when my mum asked my brother and me to go and support her friend's son's band - we weren't exactly enthusiastic. It was at some piss poor venue - they all are in the Borders. To say they were a cut above would be an understatement. Saw them at various places in Edinburgh just as they were starting to make it, spoke to them many times and I can still remember how excited they were about one of their songs getting air play in America. Modern Leper is one of my favourite songs, particularly when I'm feeling down. Hope you found some peace Scott.
