Because I don't buy that a team with Adrien Silva, Moutinho, Guedes and Bernardo Silva has to resort to play long balls to Ronaldo and counters in 4 passes or less like they are Iceland. I've seen three of those players doing great in eye-pleasing teams, and I doubt Adrien Silva would feel like sticking Sulley Muntari in 82' Brazil.
If you seriously thought a Portugal had any chance of playing free flowing football against a team on Spain's level, it would be kind to call you deluded.

Is being man of the match in a World Cup semifinal not being great?
He was pretty good as a kid in 2006 to be fair. And I would give him a pass in 2014, considering that he shouldn't have even been there.

His 2010 world cup was terrible though. The only thing I remember him doing was scoring a late goal against North Korea when Portugal was already winning having scored a few goals. But then, that World Cup was quite weird though. Ronaldo scored once, Messi didn't, I think that Rooney, Torres, Kaka didn't score at all, Drogba scored once, Diego Milito who had the best season in Europe essentially didn't play at all and so on. Only David Villa and Higuain from what were being considered world class attackers had a good tournament.

Shows what a joke it is, Messi had nearly 70% of the vote a few months ago on a United forum no less.
More like a lot of things adding up since the last summer. Ronaldo winning Euros, winning the UCL again and being leading scorer there again, that free kick against Juve, yesterday's match and so on. A lot of people who had Messi slightly ahead by this time last year, might have changed their opinion and have Ronaldo slightly ahead.

Personally, I put Ronaldo on Messi's level last season, and slightly ahead after this year's UCL.

Ronaldo also was in a bad form when the poll was made, and as we have seen today, players are as good as their last performance, so obviously Messi had an advantage then.

Starting the poll at a time where Messi was in better form had nothing to do with it though
:lol::lol:

This is your worst one yet. Ronaldo had just disposed of PSG and scored in every game he played in March (this is from memory, I remember him being awesome in March) and the poll started March 24

@Damien, please close the poll if it gets equal. The debate should continue forever.

Messi leading by one point at the moment.

He was pretty invisible in the Spain match but Spain were great and under Queiroz we sat back as much as we do now.

He was good in the first game, hit the post twice iirc. Then he wasvery good in the North Korea game and the Brazil game was 90 minutes of a non agression pact so both teams could go through. Spain only conceded one goal the whole tournament and we were clearly second best for that one, the last 2 World Cups he's been pretty unlucky with the circumstances and just like Portugal the Euros have gone consistently better for him. Now he has a final chance and leaving a mark on the World Cup is really the only thing missing from his career so hopefully he keeps going.

He was the best player on the pitch, he didn't get the award for it.
If he was, he’d have gotten the award. Clear MOM gets the award every time. I once played in a game where we won 8-0 and the goalkeeper still got MOM because he made about 50 saves. Ended up signing him for our team

Anyone but Rashford
Maybe you should start adressing the elephant in the room "Portugal don't play at anything", "they played poorly". Well, when their star and best player is happy and thriving in a direct style, because he can't do a job similar other star players like Isco, Hazard, Messi, Modric, Neymar, Coutinho, Eriksen, Kroos, Ozil or James do for their national sides... when you defend your star player and the best arguments are aerial duels and touches as a target man that implies something. At what point are we going to start talking that maybe Portugal play an awful football because it brings their best odds thanks to Ronaldo, instead of talking how Ronaldo has to bear with a team that plays dreadful football?.

Because I don't buy that a team with Adrien Silva, Moutinho, Guedes and Bernardo Silva has to resort to play long balls to Ronaldo and counters in 4 passes or less like they are Iceland. Messi had a 4-1 lead in Ballon D'Ors won.

At their best, Messi is clearly a better player. His 2010-2011 season and 2014-2015 season are a level above anything Ronaldo's produced.

However, Ronaldo's sheer drive to be the best is unparalleled in sport at the moment.

The fact that he tied it with Ballon D'Or wins and will likely pass Messi this year is simply incredible.

Still believe Messi is a better player overall, but Ronaldo will probably end up being a greater player and in 50 years, the argument might even favor Ronaldo.

Amazing work mods :lol::lol:

FFS let’s just agree to appreciate them both. It’s frightening what they’ve done, never been an individual rivalry like it in the history of sport.

Yeah history doesn’t give a feck about anything other than numbers and honours and ronaldo is on par to have a better career than Messi.

He was nowhere near being man of the match.

Hence your statement 'man of the match always gets man of the match' is obviously not true.
Now I’m going to play your game. That’s NOT what I said.

Next sentence you say clear best player always wins. How does that deny those quotes? :houllier:
Put the sentences together, if he was the clear MOM like you’re making out, he’d get the award. He didn’t stand out enough.

You have enough material to choose from when supporting Ronaldo’s merits, saying he was MOM in a world cuo semi when he officially wasn’t is just weak.

Let’s move on.

I'm not mocking Bale, I'm mocking what you said. Don't think I really need to do so after statements like those...

You did claim Bale was a better football player than Ronaldo 2 weeks ago, that's a fact. A sad one but it's true.
No, I didn't, I said the following:

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/messi-v-ronaldo.400526/page-265#post-22604774

Bale would produce as good, or possibly better, performances and results than Ronaldo if he was selected regularly, as he has done so when Ronaldo was rested. 21 goals in 39 appearances from the bench. If Bale was indulged to the degree that Ronaldo is, played every game, was allowed to take every free-kick, virtually every set-piece was aimed at him, he sulked every time someone else scored a goal or shot instead of passing to him, then I'm confident Bale would score as many as Ronaldo.
I should have added that Bale was at least as good as Ronaldo, I would say clearly better, when indulged in this way playing for Wales, in a much worse international team, from a much less significant footballing nation, during Euro 2016.

However, I'm sure you're well aware of exactly what I said, as I decimated your pathetic argument at the time, as anyone can see from the post that I've linked to, and you never responded because it was impossible to come back with anything rational. Although not having anything rational to say has never stopped you from posting previously.

Don't attribute words to me that have never been said, particularly when I've already corrected you twice. This is now the third time that I'm correcting you.

I am more than capable of expressing myself, and what I write will inevitably be more coherent than what you write. I don't need you, or anyone else, to tell me what I have or haven't said.

I didn't say he was clear man of the match, I said he was man of the match. Thuram was also great.

It wasn't my argument for anything, I was replying to someone saying this was his first great World Cup game and I pointed out the France semifinal in 2006 which that poster apparently forgot.

Let's move on
Thank God

Yeah history doesn’t give a feck about anything other than numbers and honours and ronaldo is on par to have a better career than Messi.
Messi will have been Spanish player of the year nine times when he inevitably wins it for 2017-18. Ronaldo has won it once. Messi has dominated Spanish football for a decade.

Furthermore, Messi led La Liga in goals, assists, completed dribbles, key passes, in every conceivable matrix last season. This is totally unique, there is no other player who comes close to this in any major European league. Even in France and Germany, where it is a walkover for PSG and Bayern, there is no player producing anything close to what Messi produced last year. Let alone is Ronaldo anywhere near that level. He's a highly effective forward, he's a poacher like Gerd Muller, except that Muller had a significantly better record.

That's why, as I said earlier, Simeone stated that Atletico would have won the league last season if they had Messi. He didn't say that about Ronaldo because he knows it's not true! Equally, when Ronaldo goes, Real won't really miss him. They'll sign some other galactico, get a major centre-forward, someone like Lewandowski, and continue to play exactly the same way they do now with similar results. When Messi leaves Barcelona, or declines, they are going to seriously struggle because he is instrumental to every aspect of their play.

Additionally, Messi has won significantly more than Ronaldo, and at a younger age. He will also have scored more goals than Ronaldo by the time he is Ronaldo's age, this is inevitable, and he's miles ahead statistically in every other aspect of play. Messi has a better goals-per-game ratio, and has set scoring records that Ronaldo hasn't come close to matching, despite the fact that his entire game is geared to scoring goals. Messi scored 71 in one season, whereas Ronaldo's best tally is 61. And Messi's 71 came in a season in which Barca finished second. He also has the calendar year record, which again Ronaldo has come nowhere near equalling.

One free-kick, which was frankly due considering Ronaldo's conversion rate for free-kicks has become embarrassing, will not change that. Messi is the better player, quite honestly by some distance, Messi has a far superior skillset, Messi has had the more successful career in terms of medals won, Messi has dominated Spanish football, Messi has the better statistics, Messi is widely recognised by his fellow and ex-professionals to be the best player of his generation, if not ever.

Messi is compared to Maradona and Pele, Ronaldo is compared to Messi. It's really only Real Madrid fans, Portugese people, deluded United fans who think Ronaldo gives a sh*t about United, and impressionable children who would even compare bracket Ronaldo with Messi. Anyone who knows anything about football and is remotely objective considers Messi to be better. It really is a no-brainer.

In the past, this would have been recognised easily. It was recognised easily when Muller and Cruyff were playing, despite Muller massively outscoring Cruyff. Today, with all of the blanket media coverage of absolutely everything, many impressionable people can easily be led astray on many different topics. In reality, the gap in performance between Messi and Ronaldo is significantly bigger than that of Cruyff and Muller, but some people lack the perspective, objectivity, and / or intelligence to recognise this.

Again, one qualifying game, in which Ronaldo scored his first ever goal in the World Cup (wow, he must be the best player of all-time!) will not change this.

All of that to pretend you never said Bale was better than Ronaldo. Here's the freaking quote...

As it stands now, Bale is at least as good as Ronaldo, probably better, and certainly younger and a better long-term prospect.
This was one week ago :lol::lol:

I didn't reply to you because you're incapable of making a post with less than 30 lines and it was obviously not worth replying to since you were arguing crazy shit like you always do in this thread. So instead of arguing with you I'll just make a @wub1234 genius compilation of some of the most batshit crazy things you've posted.

If Real have any sense they will get rid of Ronaldo
Bale would produce as good, or possibly better, performances and results than Ronaldo if he was selected regularly
Ronaldo isn't even in the GOAT argument. He's a highly effective forward, but ultimately a limited player.
Ronaldo is a particularly effective forward. That's it. You could argue that Neymar and Salah are better players. Certainly Neymar has more to his game overall than Ronaldo, while scoring a comparable number of goals.
Well, you could argue that Muller is better than Ronaldo
If Bale was indulged to the degree that Ronaldo is, played every game, was allowed to take every free-kick, virtually every set-piece was aimed at him, he sulked every time someone else scored a goal or shot instead of passing to him, then I'm confident Bale would score as many as Ronaldo.

Except that Bale wouldn't do some of those things because he's a more mature human being.
I've seen Ronaldo play in the flesh for United, on the Stretford End, about 30-40 times. Which is more, I surmise, than most people on here have done. The difference is that I'm objective
This post before last night's performance is just so beautiful

I think you make numerous very valid points, but we just don't know how Ronaldo would perform in a team that doesn't dominate every game. Real Madrid are just much bigger and better than every team in La Liga other than Atletico and Barca. They have performed so poorly this season to finish third. At Real, he is guaranteed chances because they dominate possession and play in virtually every game. At United, there are numerous games where this wouldn't apply, and to fair they've hardly dominated any matches over the last six months.

And you saw last night what Ronaldo contributes without service; ie. nothing (not that this is unusual; most strikers are like this, particularly as they get older).

Ronaldo is much more likely to move to PSG where the conditions suit him; ie. it will be a massive move, he will be the focal point of the team at the expense of everyone else, PSG batter everyone in France, he is guaranteed to score goals. If he moves to United, there is no particular reason to believe that the team would get better in terms of creating chances and progressive attacking play. He is likely to convert more chances and score more goals than Lukaku, but as he scored 28 goals this season and was arguably United's second best player after de Gea, it's hard to believe that this is what the team really needs.

In terms of contributing outside the box, or playing as a winger, those days are finished for Ronaldo. And he's not a Messi with some fabulous skillset and technical ability; he basically scores close range efforts, scores headers, or does nothing.
This one during yesterday's performance even more so...

Suck on that, you diving ....
Keep going and I'll make a book out of these.

Strange long reply to someone who actually thinks messi is the better player. I always will. I’ve seen Both of them live multiple times, and against each other on the same pitch twice. It was clear as day who the better player was. If we judge them only on their 20s then messi wins by a landslide. What ronaldo has done is set the bar so high in his 30s that it’s closed the overall gap. Time will tell how messi plays as a 31/32 year old but from an athletic standpoint, he doesn’t possess the qualities to play the role he demands of himself for much longer. If he wants to take the “best player in their 30s” mantle off Ronaldo, he MUST stop dropping so deep and jusy concentrate on finishing because right now, that Barcelona and Argentina team just aren’t going to finish enough chances he gives them.

Edit: if ronaldo wins the WC I’ll change my mind

That's actually alot of people. Also people outside of these arbitrary groups you've defined believe Ronaldo is in the same bracket with Messi. Every post you've made in this thread is awful and after this reply I'll be adding you to mute so I don't waste one more second of my life reading your verbose drivel.

Must say I was disappointed in Argentina and Messi today, they have so many great talents besides the great man but everything is so geared towards him that it's actually hurting them. I've never seen him look as static as he looks for Argentina, don't know if it's motivation considering he called it quits a year or two ago only to come back due to immense pressure from the nation. They need to find solutions, having another playmaker alongside Messi is essential because at the moment it's far too predictable. Good thing they have Dybala to resort to.

This is how people argue on the internet to prove their point? What an abomination of a post. Also, no surprise as a solitary Barca fan is agreeing with him.

I don't understand what's so hard to understand, when I said he'd proven you wrong I was obviously not talking about what you said about other people in this thread, that had nothing to do with it.
So why did you say it? Just like your last paragraph about Ronaldo's adaptability and how it's easier to build a team around him. It made zero sense to say those things in response to what I was talking about.

No, you just have a problem with those two and me... while the other thousand nonsensical views in this thread that are pro-Messi are fine :D
Well you got me there, I don't bash the views of Messi fans very often in this thread. Maybe I should.

Your praise of Ronaldo came with an obvious statement that he played very well yesterday followed by 20 lines of why it wasn't that impressive. Twisting words
I'll quote myself again..

The game last night was the best I've seen Ronaldo in years, and that's with me not giving him much credit for two of the three goals since I thought one was a pen and one was a terrible mistake by De Gea. The freekick was pure magic though. He was involved in the play, created chances and was by far the best player on the pitch imo, very interesting start to the tournament.
This is me apparently "downplaying everything he did" and writing "20 lines of why it wasn't impressive". It's funny because when I read it it looks like I'm praising him as the best player on the pitch despite not giving him much credit for two of the goals, which in my eyes makes his performance even more impressive. You look at it like I'm being angry and bitter. :houllier: Maybe I should start praising him for things I never praise other players for, just to show how fair I am.

That's not what I said... I said you downplayed what he did for Madrid by saying he only did what he did because his teammates were great. Which you did.
I'd love a quote for that one as well, so far you're you've accused me of a lot of things while proving precisely nothing. As for Portugal, this is what you said.

You were one of the people who ignored what he was doing for Portugal while constantly downplaying what he was doing for Real Madrid because of his teammates.
I actually searched for that myself and found zero posts where I've mentioned Ronaldo's performances for Portugal. Only did one search though so maybe you have more luck. Or perhaps this is yet another time where you accuse me of something I didn't say. It's happened 4 times now in a few hours so it's not like that would be something new.

This is not about football anymore so I'll leave it at that and let you find another way to vent
Sure, next time Ronaldo has a good game I'll do what I did yesterday, release all my anger and bitterness in a post describing how good I think he was. :D
