Back to back clean sheets in world cups v Brazil and Germany.

Yet only played for Ajacco, Malaga, Granada (relegated in his loan season) and Standard Liege in european football.

Baffles me a little, you'd have thought a Milan or Valencia type club would've taken a chance on him as he's pretty decent. Good handling on long rang shots and o.k with crosses. Either that or he dosen't have an agent!

Yeah, always thought that it was weird that he never was at a decent club, has looked good every time I have seen him.

Weren't we linked to him before we signed De Gea?

Not that we chose poorly or anything, but I'm sure he had offers from bigger clubs. It's weird how that kind of move never materialized.

TBH I don't watch him every week but just seems odd he's never been at any big club, even as a non-playing number two. You'd have thought that would've been a natural step up after playing for Ajacco and then playing well for Mexico at last world cup.

Even now he'll only be 33 at end of this world cup so still got 3-4 good years left.

Just strikes me as one of those players who hasn't had as good career as he could've had in europe for his ability.

He's as inconsistent as he can be to earn a living from football, I love him because you can enjoy when he has a huge game and then have some banter when he's awful, but I wouldn't like him in a 100km radius around the Camp Nou with a Barcelona shirt.

He's had a lot of bad luck throughout his career.

He started as wonder goalkeeper in Mexico since very young playing for one of the bigger teams there. He had impressive reflexes and the defense on his team (America) was atrocious so he was always making wonder saves.

It was no rare for him to save free shots like this back in the day, and today he did it again!

Then he had an impressive tournament in Copa Libertadores and he was rated as the best goalkeeper of the continent. I don't remember well but I think he was linked with Milan or Manchester United, but his club wanted more money for him and weren't that interested in selling him as they're more or less well founded club. He was around 20 years old by that time but not changing club kind of affected him as he really wanted and felt he had the talent to be successful

In World Cup 2010 he was supposed to be the goalkeeper for Mexico but the manager (who was appointed last minute) didn't trust him and benched him for a very old goalkeeper of his trust. This also affected him and made his value decay as he was no viewed as an unreliable goalkeeper (like very good reflexes but with position mistakes in set pieces) because the manager openly said he didn't trust him.

In 2011 he could had gone to PSG but he was involved in some doping problem involving contaminated meat, so it was almost a deal done but news break out so the deal fell off. He was still determined in moving abroad so he settled for Ajaccio earning 4 times less money (according to him) to what he earned on his last contract with America. So yeah, it has been very rough for him and even in Ajaccio it was hard for him to find a better team as he would occupy a foreign place in any Europe team.

So yeah, used to be a big fan of him when he was still a teenager in America, really impressive saves and I also think he hasn't lived up to his potential.

Miles Jacobsen and co must sit and smile when they see players like Ochoa do it on the big stage years after their predictions

Ochoa performs well, his biggest problem if that he doesn't hold an EU passport (and he has an awful agent)

Agreed, Ochoa could join Jorge Campos, Rene Higuita, Jose Luis Chilavert, and Rogerio Ceni, as a goalkeeper that never been playing with a decent european teams. Imho.

He’s actually shite. He just has played well in some World Cup games. For Granada he was a blooper highlight reel.
Shite? That Granada team had one of the worst defenses in modern memory. As mentioned already in this thread, Granada's supporters grew to really appreciate him after that loan season.

He was going to sign for PSG in 2011, but a bunch of mexican players got booted out of the gold cup for doping. The case was dropped as clenbuterol contaminated meat is a problem for Mexico. He ended up joining Ajaccio, and while he gave some fantastic performances it wasn't enough. Also had a fantastic 2014 World Cup, yet could only get Malaga to sign him.

Football Manager 2006 & 2008 legend. Didn't he have a serious knee injury when playing in France?
Don't recall that. He's been extremely regular, other than his time at Malaga where he was benched, but never injured. Still a good age at 32 going 33, too.

Well, he is out. 25 saves in the cup. Let in 6 goals.
Dude bailed out the shitty mexican defense so many times, but there is only so much he can do.

Guillermo Ochoa is not a real human but a vengeful Aztec God summoned by Dragonballs every four years to save Mexico from embarrassing scorelines.

That or he's the Mexican Shay Given.

Very decent keeper with unreal reflexes and he’s really brilliant on the line, but I think he’d would have been found out in the Premier League, not so impressive when it comes to control of his box

People on this thread clearly only see Ochoa once a while. I follow La Liga and his season at Granada was terrible. Yes, he has some of the greatest reflexes which makes him make impossible saves and if inserted into a decently organized side he can become handy.

But his positioning, handling techinque and lack of aerial ability make him a liability in a lot of matches, like happened during his season at Granada where he made a lot of poor performances.

This is just an example where he fecked up big time in a vital match for Granda:

It's not that different though to Jack Butland letting in about 70 goals for Stoke last season. He made a similar error away to Leicester.

Dosen't mean he's an awful keeper although probably not good enough for a CL club.

Exactly, mate. Ochoa reflexes make him better than average, but his weaknesses make him a liability for a club who wants to win titles and needs a solid and consistent keeper.

But his season at Granada was quite poor not only for that mistake, but for several others. But it's also true that he saved them in a lot of matches.

I still think he'd be alright for europa league standard team in one of the main leagues.

Anyway he plays for Standard Leige now so club usually in europa league/CL.
