He was exposed plenty in 16/17. Then Baldy spent a fortune on fullbacks to protect him better (especially Walker).

He's a liability, possession based football always makes defenders look better than they truly are.

I think Pep needs to be given way more respect on this forum. So far in this world cup we've seen Otamendi, Sterling, Jesus and even fernandinho have poor performances and not look as good outside of his tactics. The leagues YPOTY Sane was even left at home by Germany.

Otamendi is a terrible defender. Without Pep he would be no different to Mustafi IMO.

If Baldy was given more respect on this forum we'd all go blind from having shite in our eyes.

He is a nasty player but anytime he touched, he complains to the ref like they killed his mother.

He's a decent CB but Argentina should be ashamed that he is their best one.

System protects him at Man. City. He gambles too much on flying in and just nicking the ball.

Didn't think he was all that at Valencia alongside Mustafi who's certainly been exposed at Arsenal.

He was very good at Valencia to be fair.

Was he still there during the Neville season when their defence was a total car crash? Mustafi certainly was.

Just never convinces me at the very top level when tested. Last season plenty of teams barely even attempted to attack Man. City so can look very comfortable in that situation.

How about before Pep, though. Those players weren't anywhere near as good. Otamendi was pretty poor, and Sterling looked a poor buy.

Nah he'd left a while before Neville's ill-fated tenure.
I watched a lot more La Liga back then and remember being impressed by Otamendi, but my memory is utter shite so I could easily be misremembering his time there.

He's a good CB when kept on a leash and probably one of the best in the league this season. But he needs very specific circumstances to do well, first a calm head beside him to cover his rashness, weird and all as it is, thats why himself and Stones worked so well early in the season, a DM who will cover too when he does something rash too. He was left stupidly exposed today and looked worse than his actual level, while playing with City this season he probably looks above his level. He's a good CB but you surround a good CB with 4 bags of shite and he'll stink.

He is though a diving fecker which is really annoying and one of these current fake hardmen in football.

Another player made to look better than he is by Pep.

And I wish someone decks him once. He's despicable with how he rolls around at times.

In fairness he is the best Argentinian defender at the moment.

Faint praise though. Imagine how Rojo mist feel with fecking Tagliafico getting in ahead of him.

He's just bang average and a hot head, basically Ramos without the ability

Contrary to most, I actually don't think he was that amazing for City this season either - their midfield is so dominant I think you could take any top 4 CB (bar Smalling who cant pass) and they'd be just as effective. I guess this isn't his fault but I do think there are a lot of better CBs out there.

A fcuking dustbin could have played centre-back for City in at least 50% of their PL games last season - none of their centre-backs were properly tested. I assumed people rated him for other reasons (previous clubs etc).

Can they review the kicking of the ball onto the opponent's head ? He shouldn't be allowed to play next game for that.

Lets be fair. He has some good qualities, although i dislike him. He is very erratic if not playing beside a leader, but next to Kompany or someone he is very aggressive and good in the tackle. But thats about it.

What do you do when Otamendi is your best ball playing centreback?

Not sure what your point is?
Well, it's not only a #10 stealing the ball away from a CB being the last man, which should be the last thing you want happening and shows an alarming lack of faith imo.

It's bad because we have this

https://bitterandblue.sbnation.com/...olas-otamendi-is-manchester-citys-pass-master

And tonight, we have this

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44567336

And another asking: "Why can't you get your players to pass the ball to Lionel Messi?"
"Messi is our captain, he leads the team and we quite simply couldn't pass to him to help him generate the situations he is used to. We worked to give him the ball but the opponent also worked hard to prevent him from getting the ball."

So, what happens with Otamendi, is City's system of lateral passes between CB's dumbed down so any decent player could thrive, or is Sampaoli destroying the confidence of his players until they're unable to play the football they're known for?.

Why are you rambling on about Messi on a thread about Otamendi? You don't want Messi to be blamed for all of Argentina's troubles and you keep dragging Messi into everything by turning a thread about making fun of Otamendi into some sort of a ballad of Messi's awesomeness.
