He's impressed me this tournament, has to be said.
He's played the best out of our CB's that have been in the competition, and has been quietly consistent too - hope he continues to improve when he returns to us!

He's very good for Sweden but international football is not the Prem so it's kind of irrelevant.

He seems much more confident playing for Sweden than United. He is also much more aggressive and passes out from the back more accurately. I hope he continues to gain more confidence from this world cup and comes back ready to play as a starter. It's time to bin the likes of Jones and Rojo if Lindelof can keep playing like this.

HELLO
He's bringing the ball out of the backline into midfield for their first goal! Good heavens

Defies belief he got a new contract. There's something wrong with this club.
Not saying Lindelof is good enough for United, maybe 1 more season to see if he can do better, just don't understand those who say Rojo is better, he simply isn't, now compared to Bailly, Smalling or Jones he needs to step up, don't know if he is well suited to the style of football in England.

The lead up to their goal was a glimpse of what he can bring, very mobile and comfortable on the ball enabling him to break lines bringing it out like that. Daley Blind can’t do that.

I think you're falling into the trap of seeing a player win some towering headers and assuming he's better than a player who didn't. In the same way people see a player make an awesome sliding tackle and immediately think he's a great defender. I thought Lindeloff was tidy all round the park, strong defensively and actually took on some players, including starting the move for the only goal of the game.

Not saying Granqvist had a bad game but why was he better than Lindeloff?
I'm not and yes he was better. Not that it means Lindelof wasnt good because he was. But Lindelof was beaten to the header in injury time while Granqvist didnt put a foot wrong and took charge of organizing and most of the defending.

He hasn't gotten playing time with us, even after having a good game, so I don't know how we can expect him to excel. IMO he should've started the cup final in a 3 after having a prior good performance against Chelsea.
I also find this a problem, not only for Lindelof but for all CB except Smalling. It is strange how he has been on the bench after some good performances. I know Jose talks about protecting the players he wants to develop for the future, but Lindelof don’t need that protection any more. I thought it was a big mistake to play a comeback Bailly in the CL instead of Lindelof, but this is the kind of management we have seen all season.

I thought he was weak in the ait once again, and didn’t do anything outstanding at defence. I like Lindelof, and hope he succeeds at United, but right now he is still our weakest CB.

Fot an example of his weakness in the air, min 90:42. He didn’t challebge in the air near the end and nearly cost his team.

Ekeke: What did Lindelof do to you? Or you just don't see football like the rest of us? General advise: if alone against 100 with an subjective opinion. Think again.

Another great performance and after three WC games in a row his confidence is back. That’s the player Mourinho bought last season.

He has without any doubt been one of the best defenders in the WC so far. You are lucky to already have him in your team.

Dumbest shit I've ever heard. Say what you believe not what the people around you say

Lindelof was good, but Granqvist was an absolute rock again and unlike Lindelof with the headed chance in the 91st minute, he wasnt beaten to anything at any point despite making more challenges.

The way Sweden set up helps him. Even Rojo would look good in that setup, while Lindelöf would be clueless for Argentina defensively. Would love it to loan him out to a PL team for a season to see how he does

Yes because we play with a very attacking system.

Sweden never went 1-0 down, at United a draw or chasing a 1-0 happens and we are far more open at the back. Sweden rarely open up.
Sweden was kind of chasing against Mexico. I think he would benefit more from a possession team with strong midfielders.

How could that be irrelevant?
Because it’s a different level and different approach to football and players that shine in one tournament/league don’t cope with another with regularity, especially England where it’s all hustle and bustle.

Well those differences would probably be very large between teams, which means that you could never say anything about any player. Luckily it is not true. If a player plays well in the WC it means he has potential. The level in the final stages is higher than most leagues like PL, German, Italian so that shouldn’t be a problem. If the team can utilise that potential depends on many things, but I wouldn’t say the league itself is one of those factors.

But how a player is evaluated is very different in different countries/leagues. In England a CB should be aggressive, good in the air, fast, strong. More reactive than proactive. This I my opinion at least. Lindelof is not that type. He is invisible almost except some good passes sometimes, but defensively he is almost invisible. No aggressive tackles, not good in the air, not strong, just good at positioning and reading the game, kind of boring.

Havn't heard much, have you? I just told you. Lindelof was brilliant, as previous games in WC. Better than Granqvist, but hey - some people just see those heading clearances and not the overall play, positioning etc.

To be honest, I'm just a bit tired of your unfair bashing of the kid. Some games for us this year he deserved it, not in this WC. But of course, i might have misunderstood. This might be a thread for Granqvist since you seem more interested about talking about him.

Bashing him by saying he played well?

Wow, you must live in a strange place.

Granqvist has been one of, if not the best CB in the tournament.

Please don't misunderstand on purpose. Not just talking about your last post, but your last ~50 in this thread.

Disagree with that. Granqvist has made quite a lot of defensive errors, been pretty lucky none of them resulted in goals. No point of taking this further. You and I disagree (and to be fair a lot of people here seems to disagree with you which i tried to exemplify earlier but I don't think I was clear enough)
Good evening!

It's easy to forget he's what, 23 or 24? He really should get more slack than he has had

To be fair after the Italy game last year he had a spell where he was getting confident. Then he got dropped for no reason.

I have to agree. Lindelof has been fairly decent, as usual in the Swedish NT. But as for someone who has been following every game in the qualifiers all the way up to the quarter final, I can only say that Granqvist is the better player. He's been a rock in almost every game for the last two years for the NT. I can't grasp why the hell he is playing in the Russian League (or I can to some extent since he is paid a shitload). It's a shame he is "retiring" back to the Swedish second division after the WC.

Looked really good against Switzerland, given he is 23 and last year was his first year in the league, he deserves a shot next year.

Marcos Rojo is still at the club.

Seriously though, Lindelof is still young and as much as the PL is different to international football, he is prospering on the biggest stage which can only give him confidence. I hope we give him an extended run in the team next season and see is he can form that partnership with Bailly. I'd still like another CB: Ideally Alderweireld to bolster our options but there's no way we should give up on Victor yet.

I've been really impressed. Come on keep this up next season and he'll be an automatic starter for us.

Had a really good tournament so far. Do hope that stops as of saturday, mind.

With an experienced ball playing defender like Bonucci, Alderweireld, etc, Lindelof could really learn a lot and turn out to be a fantastic defender.

His on the ball attributes are fine. He can pass a ball. He is still a bit shaky in defence, though, despite being better of late.

I always forget that he'a still relatively young and has only had one season in the EPL.

With experience around him, as I said, I have no doubt that he will grow into a top class centre back.

I can't say Swede NT as a team build on possession philosophy. Mexico and Switzerland enjoyed plenty of period of possession and Swede. If anything it's the discipline and play simple. Our problem is quite some of our players make poor decisions either when they play safe or play expansive. The team doesn't click in any way. In that scenario, a more robust type of players would likely be more effective than someone like Lindelof who seems to be a team player. Even a defensive set up need players to click to bring out the best of every players. Swede NT doesn't boast much quality, but as a team they're very good so far in the WC, and it helps Lindelof performs at his optimal level.

I agree with you. However I think Lindelof also would fit in a possession kind of team with strong midfielder and good passing game. If you look at Spain for example, when they hold possession the CBS and fullbacks play a very active role. In United it is quite the opposite and added to that he stays as last man when Smalling runs up for setpieces.

On the flip side if you watched Serbia you'd see that Matic did the exact same thing he did at United. Always came deep to pick the ball up off the Cbs with a short pass. Its not because our CBs cant pass the ball, its because Matic wants to be on the ball as much as possible. So don't expect that to change regardless of who we have in at CB. Thats how he likes to play and one of the reasons he plays so many passes and has a lot of touches over the course of a game.

Also Lindelof takes the longer set pieces for Sweden. So he doesn't exactly want to be the one going up for set pieces. Especially as he's not particularly good at winning headers or being physical in the box.
