And what about for hurling racist abuse? That will probably be the biggest problem with this World Cup and a pat on the back seems the most likely sanction.

I expect the biggest incident to be three English fans getting arrested after peeing on the Peter The Great's monument in Saint P.

I think you'll be surprised
Are Russia taking football violence seriously? I would imagine Putin wouldn't want that shown around the world in his country.

I think it might be like the crime thing in South Africa... for a month the violence and the racism might magically disappear (well not disappear, but not be as prevalent).

Quite from a rusky.

“It’s like being a mountain climber,” said Kostya, a member of one of the Russian capital’s prominent CSKA “firms”, after recalling how a group of Russian fans smashed through a contingent of English fans in Marseille in June 2016, using extreme violence. “Once you’ve reached the summit, you don’t do it again. There’s no point in beating them again. So they don’t have to be afraid to come to Russia, nothing’s going to happen.”

I really hope so pal.

Will you be going to many games?
I wish! I almost got a ticket to the final but in the end I didn't; and decided not to go to Portugal - Marocco or Belgium - Tunis even though now I kind of regret it. They've outdone themselves with the ticket system

I think this is going to be safe, actually. Putin won't want to have a mess under his nose and will do his best to cut down on any mischieves. And as for the racism thing, I still remember that idiot Sol Campbell warning English fans not to come to Poland in 2012 as they 'are going to come back in coffins'. I'm not even starting into his racist approach to Poland here, for which he should have been punished - if we consider racism equally, but it's fair to say it was as safe and friendly for any black fan as any Euros/WC so far.

Just got back from Russia. Had the most amazing time. Was at the England v Belgium game and the Spain v Russia one and did not see any untoward incident. It was nothing like the media portrays them to be. Everyone was very helpful inspite of the language barrier. I experienced small levels of racism when I visited England/Austria & France a couple of years ago but not one bit in Russia.

That’s a good point, as much as you try to remain neutral and not to be taken in by media reports. It’s hard not to. You probably experience more overt racism here in the UK as anywhere else in the world. A lot of credit has to be given to Russia. This world cup along with 86 – 90 has been absolutely fantastic.

Its all been very uneventful, almost too uneventful, knowing Russia's past history. It wouldn't surprise me if all the known troublemakers had been rounded up and locked away for a month.

This. The ultras would have been know before the tournament and been told to stuff it.

I had the best of times this WC. Very professional, friendly, absolute perfect tbh. Well done Russia!

This is the 4th World cup I've been to and I have to say it's the most relaxed, safe I've felt in any of them. I even booked a flight for my wife and children (not something I would have done in SA or Brazil) to fly back on Monday, We don't have game tickets but I want them to experience the festivities.

Remarkably uneventful considering the potential for serious bother. Let's hope it stays that way.

I'm not predicting this but England dumping Russia out could be a potential flashpoint if it comes to pass.

It's all on Putin really. If he wants a quiet WC he'll make it happen. If he thinks a certain set of supporters need a kicking he'll make that happen also.

I suspect he's enjoying making all those who were opposed to them hosting this eat their words and will want yhe whole thing to be viewed as nothing other than a success.

Frankie Boyle did a documentary on the Russia and the World Cup and they couldn't get an interview with any ultras. They were told they weren't allowed to speak to any media outlets.

It just goes to show that the regular occurrence of racism and hooliganism before the tournament was permitted by the authorities. They could have stopped it anytime they wanted.

I read that fans( hooligans) leaders signed "promise letter" to putin that during world cup they will not cause any problem because it would be disgrace for russia.
Well as we saw so far, when you give promise to emperor, you keep it. Not to mention sanctions from OP.

Still, yesterday england fan vandalised one statue in moscow so apparently russians are angry now.

Putin was probably in contact and said he'd kill them all if they started shite. He's a man of his word (when it comes to shady stuff).

There’s been more loutish, football-related brawls in Kent this past month than there has been in the whole of Russia. That, in itself, tells you enough. Don’t believe the mainstream media’s lies and never follow their narrative. You’re being conned.

Been very quiet so far, hope it stays that way. Other country's should follow in the same way. Lock them away and the hooligans will soon disappear.

So the Russian hoolies kicking the heads off people at the Euros were a fiction created by the evil mainstream media? Gotcha.

The Marseille events were done for russian organized ultras groups get money from the authorities to avoid causing troubles at their own World Cup.

Russia is not soft in laws against hooliganism, but those groups are very organized and couldn't care less.

This isn’t the Euros. This is a World Cup in Russia where, for at least the last two years, we were promised wide-scale violence by the mainstream media. Where is it happening?

Was in Russia for ten days. Matches in Volgograd and Rostov, also stayed in a town by the Black Sea for a few days. Everywhere I went I felt safe. The strangest thing was I hardly noticed any police presence...which was very nice IMO.

The Kremlin sends Russian hooligans to Euro 16 to cause trouble and undermine the credibility of the organisers and 'the West'. Russia put on World Cup 18 where the hooligans are forbidden from causing any trouble or face severe sanctions. Putin can then proclaim how much more civilised Russia is than the West etc etc.

“It is difficult to prove this was sanctioned by the Kremlin but we can see that a number of them are in the uniformed services in Russia,” the source said. “It looks like a continuation of the hybrid warfare deployed by Putin.”

https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...to-russian-euro-2016-hooligans-vladimir-putin

A notorious leader of a Russian supporters’ group, Alexander Shprygin, was expelled from France after he was stopped on a bus travelling to Lille from the south of France after the trouble. He was among 43 fans detained. Shprygin, who was accompanying the official Russian delegation at the championships, was pictured alongside Putin at a football fan’s funeral in 2010.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/jun/16/alexander-shprygin-russia-fan-deported-euros

Some of Russian hooligans were known to work in the Russian civil service and Shprygin has credible links to Putin, he traveled to France in Russia's official delegation.

That is the view from the West, what's your counter argument?

We weren’t “promised” anything.

People - football fans and journalists alike - saw organised gangs of Russian thugs running rampage at the Euros and, hence, assumed that there was a significant risk of these same thugs cracking some skulls in their own backyard. Which seems entirely reasonable to me.

The reasons why the event has been so peaceful is a different discussion entirely. I’m just taking issue with your implication that the widespread apprehension about the possibility of violence was a media conspiracy. Which is, obviously, nonsense.

I returned a few days ago and was unsurprised that there was no trouble. There are literally thousands of Army troops lining the route to the stadia. It is a very common thing for huge events in Russia to be policed like this. For those who say the authorities let them get away with it normally, please consider the ridiculous cost of stationing as many police/military outside each stadium for normal league matches.

The media do this for any Olympics/World cup etc.

We were told South Africa would be chaos & dangerous, likewise Rio, likewise Ukraine 2012, likewise Russia.

Some of you are more interested in the theoretical reasons for why nothing has happened than in the amazing experience of those reporting back from the event. Those who hunger for trouble will find it.
